The tragedy of S&B points to the ongoing problems of upper management at Ubisoft. This is what's preventing them from making games players want to play. It's not just sexual misconduct allegations, or toxic work environments. A lot of creativity is being stifled due to petty office politics that include, but are not limited to sexism (female execs and devs getting their unique ideas sidelined just because they feature female leads, or because the idea came from a woman). Nothing will change until management changes, but Ubisoft has demonstrated they are unwilling to do this. Period. Thus, their focus on mobile and live service monetization is now taking the company in a direction it didn't start out in that gained it the following it has. Splinter Cell, AC, Far Cry were innovative games of their time, but they're throwing it all away for easy cash grabs and monetization.
@PLAYER_420693 жыл бұрын
The other unfortunate thing S&B brings to light is probably the same thing is happening with the Beyond Good & Evil sequel, too. It's announcement then disappearance for years at time eerily mimics Skull & Bones troubled development. I bet BG&E 2 will never see the light of day and if it does, it will be another forced contractual arrangement, too.

Honestly, what killed the hype for me was the fact that it’s a Multiplayer focus game. I legit just wanted Assassins Creed Black Flag, but without the Assassins Creed. Literally just the pirate stuff. The combat, the ships, the fleet, the crew, the swashbuckling, the treasure hunting, the pirate mythos, maybe even some eldritch stuff like the Flying Dutchman, the kraken, Cthulhu! Like, just open world pirate stuff with pirate stories and pirate adventures WITH multiplayer, not ONLY multiplayer. Now I know what you’re about to say: “Then just play Sea of Thieves.” To which I say, shut up you don’t get was I’m saying. Sea of Thieves is good, yeah, but it’s multiplayer only and also more… lighthearted. It’s the Fortnite of pirate games. I want something more… serious, more detailed. Black Flag got me interested in Sailships more than like, idk, windwaker did. Because of the detail and the beauty!

Not illegal but some type of mandatory disclaimer that its all just a visual display of the concept and idea. Just purely an artistic representation. There should be some type of thing that holds these teams to the potential misleading and manipulating the consumer/public. Same way they put the disclaimer up of "Work In Progress" and such on in game demo slices. But that won't be allowed to happen cause that would play into other industries and their similar marketing. You know, the commercials and ads that pretty up, edit and do their best to make a product or service look so incredible, but when you buy it, what you get is nowhere near the actual thing as advertised. Of course, as far as the gaming industry is concerned, its a case by case basis. Some games have these Cinematic trailer that enhance and accompany a really well made and delivered game. Other times, we're being sold a good looking visual idea to get our pockets open and waiting. But yea some type of thing should be implemented to protect/warn/inform consumers and hold Teams accountable and to a certain standard of practice.
@jp97073 жыл бұрын
I can't remember where I read this, but apparently creating gameplay trailers diverts the team's resources for a while. Instead of working on the parts they need to, they have to put a lot of work into the precise bits that will appear in the trailer, to make those bits look totally polished and like a finished game. Even if the game still has loads of work that needs doing. I think I read that it can actually slow down development by months? Not certain about that though. Any game developers know the answer...? I agree that cinematic trailers can be misleading though. Edit: yeah, I watched further into the video, it's this 'vertical slice' idea. Their efforts get directed into creating a vertical slice rather than working in the actual game.

It’s partially because of sea of thieves that the game is under constant stress and change. Ubisoft planned to release skull and bones as just the “sailing” from AC: black flag . It was supposed to be a repackage of the sailing formula only , but after the success of SoT and community back lash, they realized they needed to reconsider. Everything just got lost in the hype and skull and bones couldn’t meet those standards, they scraped the idea they had and the game has been in an identity crisis since then. Hopefully S&B now has a concrete idea and devs are working to realize it.

120 million almost a year ago. Means it's at least 130 to 140 now you'd think. No possible way this games makes them money. Not with what they showed the other day. It's pretty obvious that Sea of Thieves kind of kicked Skull and Bones square in the nuts. I imagine the features in SOT made the devs of SB realize that they really need too do some work and add significant ship, character customization, etc. This is my assumption, and this is why I think the game has been in Davey Jones' locker for 5 years.

With Sea of Thieves already pretty much taking over the pirate PVP thing, I think it would be a smart move to pivot to an area where Ubisoft games are generally kind of lacking. Live-Service PVE. Leave out the player on player business and the survival elements and focus instead on the pure pirate fantasy adventure as a community experience. Sort of Black Flag by way of Destiny 2.

I absolutely loved AC4: Black Flag, so I've been excited for Skull & Bones ever since I heard about it, although right from the beginning I was always confused about what exactly it was supposed to be. If it was purely arena-style PvP with ships then fine, I could get into that for a while, but looking at it now after watching this video, I don't really think that's enough anymore. I'd still play it, but that's not all I want from it at this point. If it were up to me, I would make it a little more story-based like AC but with the option of multiplayer co-op and possibly even PvP invasions. You could have situations similar to Sea of Thieves, where after attacking a fort with your ship to weaken its defenses, going in on foot to finish off the remaining enemies and then bringing the loot back to your ship, a rival player could show up on the horizon and try to take it for themselves. There could be some strategy involved in what ship upgrades you take for the mission. Do you go full glass cannon or have a tanky hull but weaker guns, or somewhere in the middle? Do you fight at long-range with mines and mortars or get up close and personal with a battering ram and broadsides? The thing that would sell it most of all though would be the ability to actually board enemy player's ships and have sword fights on the deck, rather than just having it be a short cutscene. If the enemy captain survives the fight, he regains some HP for his ship and can continue sailing. They could also keep the arena-style PvP that they've already showcased so far as a separate game mode for people who prefer PvP with no story. That would give us the best of both worlds. (*Sigh* A man can dream) However, after hearing about all the problems with the game up to this point, I wouldn't be surprised if they just said screw it and only gave us the arena PvP mode and called it a day. It's hard to expect anything good from most game companies these days.

I hope they bring back the sailing lines (the complicated wind dial). Age of sail ships moved faster depending on the winds relative direction. Interesting they traveled faster if the wind was perpendicular and not behind them directly. Additionally ships could stall and perform complex manoeuvres by accelerating and angling sails while turning. I hope the keep it as it makes ship combat more complex then circling around each other until one dies

Honestly it doesn’t seem like it would be difficult to make a game centered around pirates that people would want to play, give players a big world full of port towns of various friendliness to pirates, and ships with loot to plunder. The primary gameplay loop is raid ships gain currency/materials. If you choose to go with a fantasy setting of “Tropics circa 18th century” you can make the starting area shallows and barrier islands that are fine to traverse in your schooner but too shallow for large naval ships to pursue you (a real pirate tactic) small vessels with relatively light cargo would come through but to make more money you need better prizes that use the channels through deep water closer to ports owned by countries that don’t care for your black flag waving ways. The player would be faced with a challenge to balance firepower and speed, every extra cannon is a boon in a fight but you sit lower in the water, move slower and turn worse. Eventually the player upgrades their ship to larger brigs, frigates, sloops, and finally ships of the line. Each ship brings more opportunity and more gameplay with a shift to fighting ports and taking on Spanish/French/British ships that while bristling with cannon are also filled to the gunwales with loot. The player doesn’t have to remain chained to their ship and if they feel like freelancing on shore they can, give them more weapon selections too; sword, axe, blunderbus, grenadoes, knives, pistols and some combination of each. I mean I wanted to run around like Blackbeard with 8 pistols and a sword, let me do it! If you want to include real pirates as historical reference go for it and let us see some of the dark reality to these people (like that whole feeding a man his own cooked flesh thing) otherwise make it a world where we become the ultimate pirate and are eventually jailed and escape or killed or manage to slip into retirement like Henry Every. And if you’re thinking “That’s just black flag with more ship options and weapon upgrades!” Yes you understand. Like ditch the assassins angle and give me a rum soaked murderous pirate. The world they had was great, just add about 10% to it and don’t make it a dedicated multiplayer, more ship options depending on play style, and make tides/currents a thing to consider and you could have a lot of fun luring ships into the shallows where they have to slow down only to pop out from behind an island and force them to surrender or be immediately destroyed. The pirates of Nassau declared war on the world, let it be a chaotic battle of men and ships. You can make the main character literally anyone, escaped slave, Welshman, French noblewoman whose husband was killed by the English. You have so much freedom, use it and make something great!

Gives small crews the opertunity to build and recruit and farm. It's ganna be fun. Can't wait ubisoft don't let me down.

Big waves and its hard to lock on to enemies especially with the heavyshots you cant even align them yourselves, they are automatic. Hopefully you can choose the shots in each guns. Also the ability to fire at will (crew can fire by themselves without waiting for orders) will make it easier when focusing on driving the ship. Edit: and for the love of god. I want a 1st rate man o war! Thats what they missed out on in blackflags, everything was done on a brig. I at least want to control a Galleon which is what i really want or a Frigate or small 2nd rate.

Controlling each cannon or having them shoot automatically sounds boring. It was already great in black flag.

This game and Beyond Good and Evil 2 are fighting with the damn devil in dev hell. Will they ever arise from the dead
@reddemon66683 жыл бұрын
These games decided to fight with the devil lol, especially good and evil 2, those devs really went for the big boss. The devs want the game to be more than What they can handle. We’re talking about creating entire planets filled with life and cities. Space and inner planetary battles, dungeons, customizable ships, characters, weapons, skills , etc… I mean I can’t imagine how hard it is to develop an entire planet without making some areas completely barren and lifeless. These people are trying to create multiple planets, almost to none load times at least within each planet, a plethora of side quests and dungeons to boot! You can ask G&E 2 devs how big they wanted their game to be and your answer is going to be “yes!”

@@reddemon6668 damn with what you're saying they're trying to do. I feel like they are too big for their boots. No wonder it's been years since any thing has been said. You dont want it to be so massive to end up flopping when it releases because theres so many unfinished things that aren't polished. Surely due to that scale they will miss out on a lot of things

This isn’t an issue with game development, this is a serious management problem. If I was a shareholder I would be furious to see execs throw money out the window just because they weren’t able to commit to a single vision.

Regarding what Jayvee says at 10:05: Ubisoft HAS been weird recently - with its excessive microtransactions, partnering with Tecent, wanting to focus more on mobile and online gaming (which isn't inherently worrying, but these mediums do lend themselves to microtransactions and endless content dumps), and altering its own franchises to try to mimick very successful franchises (turning Assassin's Creed into a knock-off of Witcher 3, then planning to being it online, possibly because of the success of MMOs). I think this makes sense if you look up Ubisoft's financial history. I'm not saying I approve, I'm just speculating about the cause of this sudden attitude shift. Here's an extract from Ubisoft's entry in Wikipedia: 'Since 2018, Ubisoft ... found itself starting to trail its rival publishers Electronic Arts, Activision and Take Two. Bloomberg Business attributed this partially due to spending trends by video game consumers purchasing fewer games with long playtimes, as most of Ubisoft's major releases tend to be. To counter this ... Ubisoft stated in January 2020 that it would be reorganizing its editorial board to provide a more comprehensive look at its game portfolio and devise greater variation in its games, which Ubisoft's management said had fallen stagnant and too uniform, and had contributed to weak sales.' 'Ubisoft stated in their end of 2020 fiscal year investor call in February 2021 that the company will start to make AAA game releases less of a focus and put more focus on mobile and freemium games following fiscal year 2022.' I think all of Ubisoft's weird (and from my point of view, negative) choices recently have all been made out of the need for more money, to catch up to their competitors and stay relevant. They're playing it safe by following the trends - massive RPGs, mobile gaming, online games, ridiculous amounts of microtransactions. Problem is, by becoming like everyone else, they're losing the unique identity that their games used to have (in my opinion. And I'm mostly talking about AC), and they're also copying some of the more money-grabbing techniques of the industry (microtransactions, which mobile and online gaming lend themselves to especially). They're also trying to shake up their old formulas, because people are no longer buying the sorts of games they used to put out - and they're doing that by trying to copy the sort of games that are currently selling well.

My gosh, just make a blackflag sequel UBI. 🤦🏾♂️ They are really trying to force this online stuff and im not so sure people want that for most UBI games. The question you asked about the game could be asked about UBI, 'what exactly IS UBI'. There is such a huge disconnect between what fans want from UBI and what UBI thinks we want.
@reddemon66683 жыл бұрын
I don’t even think ubi knows what they themselves want at this point.
