It’s not Greek Revival, which was a very popular architectural style in America until probably a few years after the end of the Civil War, the early 1870s. This mansion is a Classical Revival house, obviously inspired by the beautiful Greek Revival and Antebellum architecture in Alabama.

The "clock" like thing in the kitchen is a call button system for the servants. Each room was equipped with a button to call the servants. Someone would press the button, the device on the wall would ring, and one of the hands on the device would point to the room number so that the servant would know which room needed their attention. The device underneath could then be used as a way to talk to them about what they needed in the room that called. It was connected by way of a pipe or speaking tube. Usually, every room that the "masters" of the house would use or occupy would be equipped with a small speaking tube and bell.

The item was to call servants to a particular room. Being a very southern house, there likely was a half bath off the kitchen because in those days they certainly wouldn’t have used the same bathroom as a servant. Very much like the movie The Help.

I cannot understand why the city did not try to protect Glen Iris instead of building apartment houses for low income so close. It ruins the beauty that Glen Iris definitely had at one time

The second owner added the apartments in the 1960’s according to an article found via google. I’m surprised the neighborhood let apartments be built.
@susanhenry9208
@susanhenry9208 Жыл бұрын
@@j.goodwin9908 it’s a sad story of economic decline and homeowners wanting to move to a ritzy neighborhood to maintain their reputation of wealth. In the 20’s Birmingham suffered because of the “crash”. Many homes in the area that I lived in were converted into apartments because owners could not afford to maintain such large homes. Others were left abandoned at some point. Some are tied up in probate. As time went by, the area continued to decline. The city did not value the history of the homes or the public buildings. In the 70’s the modern movement caused many buildings to be torn down for new development. Owners found it more profitable to sell the old homes to developers for apartments and etc. This fight continues to this day. Neighborhood associations continue to appeal to city hall concerning rezoning issues. The good news is that many of the old homes are being sold to owners how are restoring them.

You got permission to go in and explore yet you're super scared you'll be caught? You've repeated like 40 times you don't want to get close to windows or seen. If you got permission you wouldn't be walking on egg shells. That aside this was a magnificent home

So many vintage and antiques in that mansion . Like the cut to clear glasses on the mantle , the co,red ones . That chair in the entrance would also go for good money. Not to mention all the expensive vintage designer clothing . After seeing all of this, I'm wondering about the four children they had ? Where are they, and don't they want their family heirlooms ? You should do a follow up on this family.

beautiful old home. I wonder who owns it now, the heirs? I bet it has many stories to tell. I guess they cannot tear it down with it being historically protected. I would also guess the reason why glasses and other items were sitting around, is that some of the heirs either wanted some of the cabinets that housed those items or they were sold off to pay taxes....

I really thought before I decided to post, but there are some things you need to know. First of all, it is MADDENING to hear over, and over and over that you COULD NOT GET CLOSE TO THE WINDOWS and about how "Sketchy" the neighborhood is. You endlessly repeated this. Once was enough if you felt the need to bring it up at all. It made it sound as though you Actuall Did Not have permission to be there to film. I could name everything you "had absolutely No Idea" about. Some of these things are commonly known items. Chet Atkins was a Nationally known musician for decades. The "curvy heater" is a towel warmer commonly used and currently sold today. Those weren't fleur d'lis, they were likely hand painted (not clear enough to determine if they were "inlays" of a different color wood) medallions on the library panels. The early 1900's stressed the sunshine and fresh air and it appeared on the lower level to have an inner corridor around the outside lower floors with windows lining virtually all the outline of the living areas of the house. It appeared the glassed in room with the canvas and supplies was likely an original breakfast alcove, perfect for an artist to work. The stair chair climber have been sold exactly this way for decades and the old fashioned elevators were original to many houses and commonly installed in upscale homes of the wealthy. Another writer pointed out the buzzer and light panel call box for the staff. The original built in telephone set up (A luxury for the time) never had a rotory dial. The earliest phone ear piece was picked up and and an "operator" magically asked who you wanted to call and connected you to the "party" you wanted. Later I believe buttons were were used. I'm not certain that the University of Alabama was ever in Birmingham other than as a satellite to U of A in Tuscaloosa. UA, Birmingham was still there in the late 1970's and was very well known for their Medical School. There are other Universities well known there. I lived there from 1973 until 1977 while my husband was in pharmacy school at Samford. That's as far as I've gotten so far. I like very much your idea of your giving us family information and history they were directly involved in. The quality of your film and stills is excellent. But it would be so much more enjoyable if you understood more about the different eras. You can do that on line and of course the good old standby, the library. But spending a few days a week learning about the time periods and what was commonly used in New homes, what they were used for and looking up common appliances for the different decades would upgrade you to a 10+ very quickly. I know this is going to come across as hypercritical but I truly don't mean it that way. I just know these things could really make a difference in your presentations. The bathroom is a weird place for a LINEN Press but that's what it looks like. It may be just a large linen closet. All the "strange" little spots looked like paint peeling look suspiciously like racoon claw scratch marks. Maybe they were looking for "nuts".

WOW!!! I'm only half way through this vid and I was thinking exactly what you wrote, only I was a lot less eloquent. Why weren't the people, who supposedly gave permission to go in the house, there with him to mollify any suspicious neighbors? There are people all around who probably deal with people who don’t have permission to be there. Then they call the police. So why disturb people around and the police and waste valuable time and resources? Unless of course that’s something you do daily? Sounds like it per your rant. Not everyone knows what everything is. Yes, the squirrelly thing was a heater - for the bathroom to dry and warm towels - amazing invention but quite modern. I received one of these for Christmas about 10 years ago and I praise the person who was so thoughtful to give me this! After all, when you get out of the shower we can assume that you are clean? So the towels are wet but clean, right? So hang the towels on this, dry them and use again!

This home is beautiful! The pride taken in the woodwork cannot be found today…if it can, it’s very far and few between. As for the Chet Atkins album you saw, you should take the time to look him up. He’s considered Nashville’s “Mr. Guitar”. He was self taught around the age of 5 and played the guitar very differently than anybody else. He used a thumb pick…as a kid he also would use the strings from the screen doors as his strings broke. He set up for Elvis to first appear in Nashville in about 1956. His Christmas album is my favorite!!! You might recognize his playing from Mr. Sandman…anyway…there’s a whole lot about Chet Atkins…way too much to list! Great video though! Wonder where the family to these people are and why they’re not restoring this home?

Just makes me sick that no one cares enough to go in and get their own belongings of their family and that the house is just left to rot all those beautiful antiques, personal belongings, and incredible architecture. How sad in the US that there are not more, interested in preserving our history instead, we let it rot away until it’s completely gone.

I grew up in Birmingham. Unfortunately, many of the old mansions in Southside and Glen Iris have been torn down or left to rot. Many of the residents moved from this area to Mountain Brook. Locals refer to it as “over the mountain”. As the homes were torn down, apartments started to fill the area and some of the old homes were subdivided into apartments. I know this area and can completely understand his reluctance to make his presence known to surrounding residents. It is very sketchy. There are historic neighborhoods in the area that are experiencing renewal and respect for the mansions that remain. Glen Iris is surrounded by low income housing and renewal efforts are slow.

If you want time capsules go to southern Alabama and you will most definitely get thrust back to the 1950s. Just look for the signs. They're usually around the water fountains. There does not appear ro be vandalism so I think there is an effort to protect it. These type of homes require a tremendous amount of funds to keep in repair. I believe one of the markers outside stated that the house is listed on the Historic Register. I don't know a Lot about that but I believe they give a certain amount of money to the owners to bring the property To THEIR STANDARDS. If you do Anything without approval from Then, you stand to HAVE TO PUT IT BACK AS IT WAS (AHhh) or return all the funds they gave you. This may not all be true, or it may have changed since I read the piece I saw on it. Further, they may have a spent a large amount on security for the property. The thing I question about the "sketchy" is this, it is the neighbors this man is so stressed. Security can only go so far but a smash and grab could take but minutes and they will have made a very nice tidy profit and they can repeat whenever they want. A thief at will. That doesn't mesh with the idea that the neighbors are vigilant in watching and gauging the security of the house.

Job One, if you are responsible for a lovely mansion that is abandoned should be to make sure the roof doesn't leak and then that there is no way for animals, too many insects, or rain can get into the house. Then clear out the useless junk and trinkets that make it look like hoarders lived there and makes it difficult to enter rooms. Then it might just be sellible if you can't afford to properly care for the place.

I totally agree with Cynthia. You gotta know what you’re talking about or it makes you look ignorant. I love looking through these old places and I’m glad that he takes you through but he always says things are one thing when they are not. Like the spoon collection that everybody had back in the day, he says is for tea. and in reading the comments, I heard that they tore that place down. That is a shame. And why would family members just leave all those photos?

I am new to u. Can't say I have ever seen one of your vids before. Great house looks like someone was going to pack up glass ware. Loved the chandeliers looks like they were original to the house. It's a shame no family members r looking after the house & furnishings. It would be most helpful if u could say what room u r in. I recognized the dinning room & the morning room & both parlors but couple times I was a little lost. I look forward too more exploring with u .Remember to take your time & really see what's in the area u r in. Til next time. Much luv. Carry on.

It doesn’t look totally abandoned. It looks too clean and like it’s being restored. It also appears they may be either splitting items or people are tasked with certain things.

Nice southern colonial mansion with Corinthian columns. I've been in a lot of abandoned buildings but that home is still in great condition. It's a shame you have so much fear of being by windows and it ruins the video. If you have permission then you should have no fears and I doubt anyone is looking at you or the building.

S metal thing is a towel warmer. Carpet in a bathroom is gross. Metal table in bathroom is a table for an old sewing machine. I never understand why families leave everything to ruin! Love that old sauna in the bathroom! I hate to see it just sit and rot! Would rather see it torn down and salvage the parts.

I was thinking those boxes on the wall were intercoms. Each button was for the intercom placed in specific rooms but not all the rooms. The ones mostly used by the family.

I dig the power meter lamp. I would of hooked it to something that drew more power though, like an electric oil heater. Or something that drew power long term. Like a hot water heater or refrigerator. All of ours got ripped out and replaced by digital ones that telemetry back to the company the reading. I had one that got zapped, and one of the teeth got damaged, and it would hang on that gear up to a certain load but not over it. So I made it a point to stay under that limit a lot lol. You could draw power but the meter wouldn't turn because it was caught on that damaged gear tooth.

I enjoyed this for the most part. However, your repetitive referrals to windows, neighbors, etc., were downright obnoxious after awhile. One explanatory comment would have sufficed. You did a great job filming, not easy, I am sure.

When it's light outside, no one can see you in the house. Opposite of being in a house at night with the lights on. You can't see outside.... Maybe you should carry something for safety.

My neck of the woods. I grew up in Shelby County about 30 mins S. This home is close to UAB/ "UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA/BHAM" THE U of A is in Tuscaloosa. Unfortunately the neighborhood has declined terribly over the last 20-30 yrs. The family probably wouldn't live there bc of it! Sad really! 😢❤ I'd have to disagree about the % of people that populate the majority of the neighborhood! Your numbers are way off! Js! ❤

What’s the deal with the neighbors? Do they all have sniper rifles? Weird! The mansion is kept very well, everything isn’t covered in dust. Did you say people live there or their are apartments close by the house? Strange tour of a mansion!

I'll offer my critique as others have that may help you improve your videos. Don't over produce it. You have too much introduction video at the beginning and the music is way too loud. Your narration can barely be heard because of it. And as others have said, if you have permission to be inside recording don't worry about the neighbors. All of your paranoia detracted from the video. The background information on the families who resided there was very good. The man's hat you noted is not a Top Hat, it's a Fedora. I'm amazed you never heard of Chet Atkins. He was quite famous at one time. A great guitarist. And lastly, the early intercom system was pretty fascinating to me. I thought it should have been obvious what it is. A telephone of that era would not have had any buttons. That is a fabulous old home. It's a shame to see how it is deteriorating. Thank you for recording the inside of it for us all to enjoy.

@@RangerRickTV All the explores, you all are aware that if these devices truly work then only demons presents these will show. For no human Spirit stays "ghosting" on earth realms. After death: Ecclesiastes 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. Meaning: Saved souls shall go into ABRAHAM`S BOSOM and unsaved into hell, for these 2 are holding places for the departed human SPIRITS. Only ones who “ghost” in this realm without body is the evil spirits: Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

The little spoons you saw saw were for demitasse cups. A regular size spoon would tip one of those little cups cups over. If you have a spoon shaped like a little coal shovel, that was for the sugar bowl. Those are NOT "collector" spoons, which were a created hobby/collectible craze designed to make people buy worthless souvenirs. The spoons you saw were silver as you can tell from the tarnish.
