Look look look, this is for kids right? This could be some kids first movie at least let children establish the conventional plot patterns in normal movies because then the status quo will change making it harder for what is an expected outcome in reality versus fiction which adds a whole new difficulty layer. What is the plot twist if the plot twist was expected because everyone's doing the same thing or crazy thing then what plot twist would you add to that twist to make it unique for adult films? The problem is met at ahead when executives( who ultimately Greenlight these film projects) who have to (I assume) look at conventional plot patterns, the status quo, what is interesting, and what do kids deserve to build a foundation of a plotline that is easy to follow and not trying to be so unpredictable or crazy that it doesn't make sense. I'm not sure if I got my point across.

I think what makes Diane such a great character is that even though she's clearly the love interest, they didn't tear away from the plot to cram it in. It's just, natural. She comes off as a genuine being who wants to see wolf succeed because *spoilers* she already has. She also is super dynamic in her role as mastermind turned governor and her skills showing off both actually strengthen the main plot instead of distracting from it. On top of that her character (and spider) are just top notch aesthetics that, even if you deny yourself turning a furry, she definitely will have brought some to the fluffy side... she can dance AND fight like... what else could she be?
@neutronalchemist32412 жыл бұрын
Diane is a great character, and she would be even without the exagerated ninja skills. She's smart, she's in a position of power thanks to her own skill, she's in control, she doesn't need the bad guys, and she doesn't need to help them, but she does, and she pulls all the right strings.She's supportive, and defiant when she has to be. All of that while being clearly interested in Mr. Wolf, and without sense of superiority. Without the "smug" that ruins so many female characters. Sincerely having fun.

When I was in creative writing class, my prof mentioned that the readers being able to predict a story isn't bad. It's a mark of good writing. You're planting the seeds and, hopefully, will get a good payoff. I dislike when people trash a movie because they guessed what happened. Hell, there's a KZbinr I watch that is in the middle of a series. And for years he's seen us guess what this character's backstory was. He was so excited when it was revealed because he knew so many of us had guessed correctly and wanted to see our reactions. Predictability isn't bad for a story.
@kamikeserpentail37782 жыл бұрын
Depends on the story really, what is trying to be conveyed. But I do think it can be boring if you can predict too much of the story. Then it becomes like, why bother going through it if you already know all the significant story beats, you won't be getting anything new from it. Like example, when you watch something and know the hero will make it through and stop the bad guy, that's ok. It's fun to find out HOW they will do it, who they will meet, and how the character will change through the story. But if all of those are known too, and nothing changes, then you start to question the point of going through with it.
@nerdoftheatre2 жыл бұрын
@@kamikeserpentail3778 Yeah it also does depend on the story. I have read such stories that do fall into that story type. But it does depend. But I think a lot of people have fallen into the idea that predictability = a poorly written story. Which isn't necessarily the case. It's something that heavily depends on the individual story.
@notyourjakey2 жыл бұрын
A good detective/mystery story will plant clues that allow an attentive audience to find the solution (either in whole or significant part(s)) before or at the same time as the characters. And less attentive audiences should be able to realize what the clues were either in hindsight or on a second viewing. Iirc Hbomberguy talks about this in his Sherlock video. An example from Murdoch Mysteries (spoilers) There's a father and twin sons with heterochromia. One of the sons was given away as a child bc they were poor. If you paid attention to the old family photo with the kid they kept, the eye colours are flipped from the guy claiming to be that kid. So at some point after that photo was taken, the kids switched places and the question of "where is the kid that was given away?" becomes "what happened to the kid that was kept?" (Which has another, harder to figure out, clue to it)
@dragames2 жыл бұрын
being predictable and being badly written to a trope are two different things. Like, let's take her being a master thief. That was predictable. However, it had a good payout for showing to the story about someone defying their 'nature' to do better which made it necessary for the story. Had she just came in and done some weird ninjutsu shit and then said "My daddy made me train, but hey, I believe you can be a better person" that wasn't predictable, but it isn't helping the story.

The thing about DreamWorks, speaking as someone who used to work there, is that the company absolutely thrives best when it functions as a counter-culture voice to the status quo currently in place for Kids & Family animation. It's the whole reason the studio came to be: To counter the animated storytelling approaches established by Disney. So we got things like Antz (not great, but it was a direct fuck you to A Bugs Life), Road to El Dorado, Prince of Egypt, and of course, Shrek. Their worst work is when they try to fall in line with the status quo or cave into increasing pressures from S&P (standards and practices) and consumer trend decision-making (AKA, "this thing is currently popular, so we should do this thing"). A lot of the recent bad stuff can be attributed to the NBC/Universal merge who have a tighter grip on the type of content produced. That said, Steven Spielberg once visited the campus and said it would behoove the company to consider making adult-themed projects, and while I have no idea if that's going to happen, the general consensus among employees was that, yes, that would probably be a fantastic next step. But they're beholden to their NBC Universal Studios overlords, so, it's up in the air. Point is, when DreamWorks just does its own thing and chooses to be the "bad boys/girls/folks" of the industry - not even in genre, but by just pushing the types of bold narratives studios like Disney aren't brave enough to do in fear of losing their bottom line $$$ - we see among their best work.The Bad Guys is a direct and clear cut example of this both in packaging and messaging. I hope this is a lesson for DW to stick to this approach, because it's what put them on the map to begin with, and it's what makes them shine brightest.

I love how _Into the Spiderverse_ kinda created this whole new playground for 3D animation to take inspiration on traditional 2D animation and _The Bad Guys_ is packed with. I loved how expressive the characters are and how well animated the action scenes are; the characters stretch in such a fluid manner that is mesmerizing to watch. The voice acting is also top notch. The plot is not groundbreaking or anything, and I feel they could've explored the heist themes better to really nail that "Ocean's Eleven" energy, but overall I had fun. My only question is that: why isn't _everyone_ in the film anthro animals? It is a bit weird to have a handful of characters being animals and the rest being humans, and it's not even explained why is that. It doesn't bother me per se since the human characters are pretty well designed. But would make more sense if every character was an animal, imho. I also agree that there was a lacking character development on Piranha, Shark and Spider. They really feel like wasted characters as the focal point is on Wolf and Snake. But who knows, if Dreamworks sees this as opportunity to capitalize and we get a sequel, maybe they could explore those characters better. Their dynamic is good enough and I wouldn't mind seeing more of Diane (not a furry I swear).

@@nickrogers3624 This is a fantastic comment. Also, I think another thing that’s worth mentioning, is that, the only person who can decide if they’re a furry, is the person themselves. Wolf and Snake's relationship and struggles throughout the movie was definitely the highlight of the story for me. I like the other characters a lot, they each have their own charm and role to play in the various scenarios of the film, but with the exception of Diane who is a great foil for Wolf, they mostly feel simplistic or just not that important to the story. however I don't think that's a bad thing! ensemble casts can really bog down the pace of a story if not handled really well and I think the more streamlined approach taken here is to the film's benefit. the animation is probably the biggest strength of the movie overall. I love the emphasis on key frames which give the action a comic book-like feel. finally I would say the mashup of a gritty and glitzy setting with cutesy, cartoony characters just works so well. it definitely reminded me of Zootopia, but throwing all the debatable thematic content of that film out the window in favor of maximizing style.The Bad Guys isn't deep or challenging, it's just a well-executed, thrilling ride.

I am yet to see the movie and have read the books and I feel like Legs gender change was unnecessary but it doesn't make the movie unwatchable, I just don't think it was needed. I can also see the reason for giving Pirahna a useful body. Really I was jarred by the difference between Mr. Wolf in the books and in the movie, they just feel worlds apart as Wolf was outgoing and hyperfixated on getting the gang to go good in the books, don't get me wrong the movie adaptation is great, its just how I feel about the character change.

Case in, The First pictured. simple characters, who are by the way similarly all established with an excellent heist and chase scene at the start. Villains? one has depth but they are just nazis. Why would you need anything more? You can get on with the rest of the impressive scenes and jokes when you do not have to elaborate on why your antagonist is bad. If you are writing a philosophical Star Trek episode that may be warranted, but elaborate villains when their function is to be bad people the protagonists clearly must stop is just indulgence, and a waste in the limited time of any movie.

Thank you for bringing more attention to this gem that has mostly gone under the radar so far! I really loved it, The animation during the action scenes was phenomenal, and I especially liked how they did smoke. Humor was also Seinfeldian more often than low brow potty humor, which was a pleasant surprise. Character writing was also great and gave most characters their own unique charm, as you said. All the characters are unique and enjoyable, so I'd have liked a small peek into all of their backstories and how they came together. I think that could have been a nice place to plant seeds for their eventual redemption, like young Nick Wilde wanting to join the scouts and having that viciously thrown back in his face causing him to enter a spiral of bitterness into adulthood, until that was finally broken by someone dedicated to fighting societal norms. But that's a very minor complaint compared to everything this movie brings to the table. I hope more people give it a chance now!

I liked it, a lot. However the moment I saw that fox lady and heard her talk, my first thought was "The internet is going to eat you alive" Just forgot to mention this, but the two "good" animals have names, but the "bad" animals are called by their species name.

Another change from the book. Not mad, just disappointed with how much Dreamworks changed.

This movie's so good! Not only is it about prejudice, but a meta jab at how we keep typecasting the same animals into the same roles in fiction. Mr. Wolf and gang are only 'bad' because that's how society sees them. Mr. Wolf's journey and desire to be accepted, only to accept that it will never happen until he takes responsibility for his past actions, is beautiful. As someone who wants more diverse roles for wolves than just 'bad guy', I loved it. Plus the art style is gorgeous!

The Bad Guys was an amazing movie! I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed Captain Underpants! In fact, this movie feels like the successor to MegaMind! I for one also loved Diane Foxington, not for furry reasons, but because Zazie Beetz plays her, and I am in love with that actress ever since her role as Domino from Deadpool 2!

SPOILERS The part where Mr. Wolf screamed at the villian, instead of just staring in disbelief or just raising his voice slightly, he actually took action. HE. ACTUALLY. TOOK. ACTION. Every single other animated movie I've watched has NEVER. NEVER! done anything like this. This sent shivers down my spine, that part is what I want to happen in MY stories, in MY animatics, animations, THAT. Is what I want. This movie captured that PERFECTLY! I was actually screaming my head out by how he did it. I loved it so much! Another part is the conversations, mainly between Mr. Snake and Mr. Wolf. They actually talk like adults, they're actually smooth, it's actually so awesome to watch. But I only LOVE this movie because doug judy plays the shark

We never needed "photorealistic" designs for animated characters in an animated flick. Also had no idea it was based on a book. I'll give it a look.

the art style really is amazing, i love how it looks 2D and 3D at the same time kinda. yes, the story is pretty simple, but its a kids movie based off of a kids book so what can you expect? it was enjoyable nonetheless. and the action scenes were really cool as well

I'm so glad you mentioned the books! So many wouldn't know the film is based on a children's comic book! Also stylish artwork in animations is ALWAYS a plus. It never ages badly, it gets better over time. It should always be something that's always considerd and not taken for granted.
@JackalopeBunny2 жыл бұрын
I never heard of the books myself, but the movie was a bunch of fun and had a lot of humor in it. I really loved the crime thing where it tells you their name and just small info about them, that you have to go back and pause to read what it even said lol. I really enjoy Sam Rockwell as Wolf, his voice fits so good. I saw the ending come and the twist, but even so it was fine. The fact all wolf had to do was hide his tail in order to be in disguise like that is what would give him away, which is just silly.

I kinda assumed this would be a good movie from the first peeks of it, and now I can't wait even more to watch it for myself x3 both this and Turning Red are some of the most hyped up animations for me and I haven't been this interested in watching something animated that isn't an anime, in a long while.
