@@muffyrogers5478 Precisely, and pretty much all the male leads aside from Jeremy and Tyler bully Matt. Even Alaric never stood up for Matt when Damon trash-talked him. Aside from that, Matt has been implied to take care of himself financially and Vicki when she was alive so he's also likely the poorest of the group. That's why I liked Rebekah and Matt. He appreciated her, and whilst pretty much everyone left him behind on trips like going to the cure, Rebekah had enough money and connections to see the world and cared about sharing those with Matt (unlike anyone of the main cast).

Lol, they have a lot of chemistry and physical attraction but if you seriously think that you havent been paying attention. Thr first 2 seasons they literally kiss once and yet they have a great relationship (not even in a romantic sense, just human). They have a lot of great moments together, deep talks, jokes, hardship... If you ask me thats why Damon and Elena are meant to be, there is so much understanding and pure love there, they are literal soulmates and you can see it, which is rare to see on tv.

Alina C I’ve always thought they were vastly overrated because a lot of people (the average viewer) thought Ian was attractive... Paul and Nina have always had more chemistry to me, I mean look at how they protrayed Silas & Amara and Stefan & Katherine. Not only that but Stefan and Elena were so pure, there was no question that they were madly in love & respected each other so much. Damon & Elena even categorized themselves as toxic in season 5... The amount of unhealthy codependency that was shown in their relationship was completely problematic but you know since Damon is the “hotter & more fun” brother everything is excused. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I ship tham cause he told her he loved her and made her forget so she could be happy with his brother. I ship them because of the look he gave her after their conversation in episode 2 where she tells him shes sorry he lost Katherine too. I ship thrm cause he chsnges so much for her amd she brings out a totally different side of him and he out of her. And because I never really saw any deep or super emotional moments with stelena, the relationship wasnt build they literally kissed episode 2 cause they are attracted to each other, not because of love. And yes, in season 5 they do make mistakes in their relationship but they break up and work on themselves, fix it and get a beautiful relationship in the end. @@HasnaaAlaa My issue isn't with that, it's that they could have been written that way but very clearly weren't. They were planned platonic, were the best built friendship on the show 100% platonic and by the last few seasons were two of the only characters who were single and had a relationship of any sort and so the writers threw them together and that's BAD writing. Had they shown them developing romance, built that relationship, shown their romantic chemistry(which tbh I don't feel the actors had but regardless it could have been made up for) and shown them being drawn towards one another or putting one another first THEN I'd have loved it. But I'm a firm believer in showing platonic male/female relationships in shows and Stefan and Caroline were one of my all time favourites and done so well and that friendship was ruined for relationship drama and a last-minute not well planned relationship imo. So I'm sorry, I get what you're saying completely! I wish I agreed, I just don't think they were well written or shown in the way they needed to be to sell their ship.

@@elizabethjulia20 exactly! their friendship was AMAZING and i liked that they were there for each other in ways that the others weren't really able to be there for each other. also, after so many seasons of like this person dating that person it was nice to just have a purely platonic, WELL developed m/f friendship in the show. those literally don't exist (like I mean truly well developed, no strings attached, and they aren't exes and have deep moments) in TVD so caroline and stefan were so refreshing. and then they ruined it and it nearly felt like incest to me bc they had such a platonic dynamic beforehand. it was too forced... and kinda pointless in my opinion with the way things ended. could've had the same effect if they stayed just friends because they were so important to each other.

But yes you're right at some point that's definitely a plot that will have to be talked about, my point is more that that that's not *the plot* of the season it's the side romantic plot to add motive for finding the cure(main plot=silas and cure). Delena isn't driven by the plot, Delena has a side plot of their own to add romantic drama ... does that make sense? I'm just pointing out that not all of their moments have to be talked about or it would take away from major plot points (important Delena ones included). Although I guess with tvd the romance is pivotal. I don't know. I suppose I take back that it's not plot driven, I'm just being bitter haha because I saw so much potential in Delena and it wasn't story boarded or written well and to this day that upsets me.

It's not that Damon loves Elena either way, I love Damon, and used to think that line hits but it really doesn't. It's that Damon is so obsessed with Elena that he doesn't care about who she is as a person he just wants her physically alive. Stefan is the one who knows how deeply Elena hates and doesn't want to be a vampire and so he's doing everything possible to make sure she's not a person she doesn't want to be. Elena isn't herself as a vampire, and not because Stefan doesn't like her(he never says that), but because she doesn't like who she is or feel like herself, she's said so herself.

Definitely true! I used to love that line and thought it proved he really cared more, but I think all this shows is that they *both* have a skewed perspective of who Elena is to them. Damon is obsessed with the idea of her to a major fault (like dude, there's a limit on how many people you should be willing to kill for your partner) and Stefan has shown in other relationships (like that one girl... dangit what's her name that Stefan dated when he dipped from Mystic Falls post-Damon being trapped? he was really not attracted to her once the normal life fantasy got broken because she'd turned. He reminds me SO much of Klaus and Cami with that... though with Klaus it almost seems more like a purity thing than a "stay human, stay normal" thing) that he somewhat relies on a level of stability and normality in his partner. Elena lost some of her "normalacy" once she turned, and I think it gutted him because I mean her true self was just heightened. Her desire for thrill and adventure etc wasn't false, just previously buried and I think he knew that and even Elena at first didn't want to accept it because it turned her idea of herself upside down. I think Stefan and Elena had the most legitimate bond post-breakup though. Either way both brothers needed reality checks. I know the whole doppelganger curse thing plays a part but 😬 They survived the Originals and countless enemies to fight over a girl eye-

So I’m sorry if I come across as argumentative I’m really not trying to be! I am so sorry in advance. If you make it through this... let's be friends because wow you're dedicated. So HA I get what you're saying I think I just... well first of all I rarely rewatch past season 3 or 4 so remembering the retcon they did is hard lol. And sorry if that's blunt but imo most of S4-8 is retcon and repeats of the same tropes and storylines, and even the new storylines aren't super well portrayed in my opinion. I hate shitting on the show. It's legitimately my favourite show and has been for almost a decade. But every time I rewatch (which is far more than a normal human being) and critically analyse the show the more I notice. So in terms of Damon, I agree but not even just because he should have limits... but because when does he actually ever explain what he loves about Elena? He says he likes that she's some good in his life(which to me is selfish because I don't think he does anything beneficial for her) but then doesn't really become a better person for having her with him? Because beyond his lack of bettering as a person(he literally does all the same bad crap when with Elena but for better reasons), any good he does is solely for Elena, and being a better person is contingent on internally being better within one's self and not for another person. It's being a better person because you are, not doing a few better things for someone else. So I think his view of Elena is… idek if it’s skewed or if I just really don’t think the writers ever gave us any perspective on his feelings for her beyond telling us he had them. Like they told us he was SO in love with her but never showed the love itself or explained it (through showing not just dialogue). In terms of Stefan, I see what you mean, but first of all (before talking Stelena) I don’t think Stefan was truly in love with Ivy, I think he loved her and wanted that life but it didn’t feel like a life-long in love being honest relationship. And when she turned she was legitimately annoying, like I don’t blame Stefan lol, I don’t think it was the lack of normalcy it was just her haha. His rebound got turned into a vampire and wasn’t likeable and he hadn’t even been real in love with her in the first place. Just my opinion, because in a show with great romance Ivy and Stefan never felt on par, it felt like an escape from real Stefan so it didn’t feel like Stefan was in love with her. So I don’t know that the example holds for me as showing Stefan only loves human normality and stability. Because he loved Katherine despite her being a vampire (his love wasn’t compelled), he loved Elena when she was at her most painful depressed unstable self(and even then said he would want her to turn and spend forever with him), still loved Elena once she was a vampire but she felt like she wasn’t herself, and he even loved Caroline as a friends and then (ew lol) romantically while she was a vampire and helped her through instability. So I do think Stefan craves stability but more internally than in lifestyle. More so craving those who he can help to grow and who help him to grow. SO on Elena and Stefan lol. I think the writers tried really hard to sell with the dialogue, the “true self” “adventurous” “alive” “thrill” Elena and Damon story. But I don’t think Elena really changed all that much internally as a vampire. She’d always craved adventure and passion and fun. She fought dangerously and passionately for Stefan in S3 (and in S1-2 tbh) and was always bold and faced danger head on. Like when was she ever more adventurous or herself with Damon?? Where was it shown because I legitimately cannot remember seeing it. I don’t even remember him challenging her or thrilling her in ways that helped her grow as a person beyond getting her to admit she loved him. He just man-handled her and didn’t let her make choices because he felt her decisions were stupid (which they usually were but like… free will and her choices make her who she is). The whole Elena being different as a vampire plot just wasn’t sold for me because of the way it was written. There’s a difference between telling and showing to me. They told us Elena was different and used dialogue to make her feel different, but beyond her being more upbeat and a vampire she was the same person internally but just feeling ooc. Stefan understood Elena better than anyone and she says that many times through the series and it’s shown, and I don’t think he was gutted by her being that person, he was gutted because he could see how much she didn’t want to be a vampire. True Elena and true Stefan knew one another intrinsically. But yea lol surviving everything only to keep fighting over a girl. Wild HAHA. OH as for Klaus and Cami, tbh I have no strong opinion lol. I think Klaus definitely was attracted to the purity factor, more than even Stefan who I think was more about the “being your truest self that you want to be”. Klaus constantly compelled Cami out of the drama and tried to keep her “pure” so I definitely agree! He did love her for who she was but was so scared because of that? Idek. They didn’t make me feel any time of way lol.

​@@elizabethjulia20 omg I LOVE discussion and even some friendly debate so if you make it through this dragged out essay too we can def be friends (took like 4 revisions for me to make this short enough to post lol) I feel you on the repetition & retcon! they got trigger happy with adding layers to backstories we already visited after a while. S6 was the last big great season to me. You're totally right, we don't really have anything to go off of as to why Damon loved Elena. There isn't even a supernatural explanation for his oddly strong fixation with either of the doppelgangers and it almost feels like too much of a coincidence to not have it explained. .. Nope, Damon doesn't change into a better person BUT- weird theory- I think he wasn't, from the start, ever really meant to change otherwise he wouldn't be Damon. He'd have to nearly become another Stefan (loosely speaking). I just think Damon's character was set in stone to be the guy filling out that 'bad boy but secretly sometimes good' trope in the show, and it was too beloved and some of the plot points were too contingent on him being that way for them to ever seriously have him arc without it coming off as a personality swap instead of development. Take away his bad traits and you just have a guy in love that's more morally pliable like Tyler or Matt or most of the side characters. Show-wise you lose your foil to Stefan because that almost *is* Stefan and you sacrifice part of the pizzazz of that brother bond in having one be a good bad guy. Elena didn't change Damon but if you didn't look too closely it still felt like she did bc of the whole "now he does bad stuff FOR her" thing you mentioned... its a cheeeeap loophole lol. I do think Damon did good for more than just Elena though! Stefan was always his "good" meter beforehand and there were lots of genuine examples in flashbacks and even modern day, and I almost wanna say that Damon's bond with Bonnie became the biggest insight into who a post-arc Damon could've been if they decided to make him an inherently better guy instead of just good for his gf. He really fought for Bonnie after S6, and she in a way became a Caroline to his Stefan in my eyes. And it actually stayed platonic so props there! It wasn't Elena-inspired so I feel like it's a bit more genuine, and its really why I prefer the brother story line over the romantic ones bc when you mostly look at them in their romantic contexts, they don't seem to develop really. You're also spot on about how we were told about Elena's change, not shown! It never really crossed my mind till you mentioned it! What I will say is Elena had strong fight instincts and was brave and strong willed in life or death situations or for people she loved, but she didn't seem to be into spontaneity, risk, or anything like that just for the sake of *fun* when she was with Stefan (besides the whole dating a vamp part) and I think that's what they were tryying to show had changed. Its not exactly a good or bad thing, but she did get more into a lets jump off the bell tower, lets party, lets stay together in the bedroom for an entire summer and literally forget the rest of the world exists vibe when she dated Damon. They dropped the ball by not letting us see Elena as a person outside of the drama more though to better compare. We have to assume bc like you said, its mostly told, not shown. Man I wanna talk to the writers smh. Now as for Stefan, agreed he wasn't in love with Ivy. Basically I feel like Stefan had this penchant for *good* that he's attracted to in anyone, platonic or casual relationship or otherwise, and does not like the idea of the veneer breaking unless he's in fix-it mode (like with Damon). It's the stability thing you mentioned I think, but it's also an unhealthy external dependence to keep his internal demons at bay (no I am not a therapist, yes I'm talking out of my a*s lol). I think he was a prototype to what would later be Elijah too (tons of parallels between the brothers in TVD and TO) and I'd like to imagine Stefan had his own Red Door complex. So with that comparison in mind, both characters' near obsession with good/stability as a way to cope or amend their wrongs became a character flaw. And I think that made them borderline self righteous or hypocritical at times, especially with their "darker" counterparts- their brothers. Only, with Elijah, better writing and more time made it clear in TO: this is a flaw. It didn't really feel like TVD wanted you to see Stefan's traits negatively until Sybil came along and I LIVED for her Katharine-like "I'm calling you out, we're alike" vibe. So upset they didn't push it further or do it earlier though 😔 Also Stefan didn't grow to me, so there was no payoff for him being around the good people he sought for stability? (Like your point about Damon & Elena since he never changed). No one changed Damon *or* Stefan except each other I felt like. It's another reason why I prefer the brother plot more than the romantic ones, bc to me its the most developed. Otherwise they had temporary bandages in the people they met for deeper things that never got fully resolved or explored to me if that makes ANY sense! And my strong opinions about Klaus and Cami are because I'm a really big TO fan 😭 I hate it here I swear but Klaus and the women in his life are an entirely other discussion lol

So yes let’s be friends (actually if you have a twitter or fandom twitter please let me know… I’m taking a long break rn but it would be fun to actually chat/interact there, I rarely meet DE fans that I get along with ha.) So in terms of the first two things, the writing and thoughts on Damon and DE. Yes about the retcon and layering! They indeed got very trigger happy with it. It wasn’t to the point of the show being *bad*, just a little inconsistent and repetitive, and S1-3 were so good that I think the S4-8 writing flaws were super noticeable. I agree that S6 was the last decent season, I rarely rewatch past S4(before switching to TO) but I’ve never rewatched S7-8. And yes I agree, there isn’t enough explanation, or showing us why Damon has such a fixation on Elena, it’s a strange coincidence BUT also just bad writing to tell us constantly and not show it *sigh*. I’ll never get past it, mostly because DE had everything I could have wanted in a ship. I love the soul mate, defy all odds, good girl who finds herself and is the only one to see the good in the sad villainised bad boy etc. except that their execution in the writing was so meh that I couldn’t get into them. It’s that “so close yet so far” feeling, that leaves me feeling SE was SO MUCH BETTER only because DE’s execution was so close that it felt so far… does that make sense lol?? If DE had just been bad, or SE had just been bad the show would have sucked. But having DE be so close to being *better* than SE, but the writing being not even as good as SE…. yet letting them win through copouts instead of just using what they had to show DE were better. I’m rambling now. I could rant about this for forever. Basically DE was so close to being equal to or better than SE but because of the writing they felt SO inferior to me, which is ridiculous. I actually completely agree, I don’t think it's a weird theory! I really think that was Damon’s trope, the impulsive bad boy vampire in love with his brother’s girl. And I guess I have two feelings towards it. Because 1. I get it. As a teenager I used to fall for it SO hard. He’s reckless and does bad things but secretly feels, and it's only because he unashamedly loves this one girl. What teen girl doesn't fall for that(especially when the guy looks like Damon haha)? 2. My issue is I don’t think it was as well portrayed as I’d have liked. But that’s me being picky with the writing and maybe preference as well as growing up lol because I dislike Damon a lot more now. I used to just love him. And I think what I like is more of a Klaus. He had good in him he was afraid to show, would pretend he didn’t care about anything but secretly did, would throw tantrums and overreact etc. He was everything Damon kind of failed at for me. Damon would do dumb detrimental things constantly, throw tantrums that weren’t evil or bad enough to make him feel like a *bad* bad boy but just bad enough to be irritating… like I can’t explain it. He wasn’t BAD enough or GOOD enough to pull off the bad guy with some good. I needed him to maybe be darker to start wth, and see him fight to be a good person but be unwilling or unable to change who he is and accept that but do good things while being Damon. And maybe they tried for this but the execution didn't hit hard enough for me, and part of that is any of this that happened was focussed on doing so FOR Elena. I think what doesn’t help is I feel like he was constantly kind of dumb and had too much bravado. It’s fine to be the smirky bad boy, but if you’re going to be bad be GOOD at being BAD. And the bravado just at some points got annoying, I’d have liked to see his bravado break around Elena, her seeing through to him and him being unable to fight the good in him when he’s around her in particular because she makes him want to be good for himself, to feel like he deserves to be good. OK sorry I’m getting into rambling character analysis…. I’ll stop but I’ve thought a lot about this haha. And I really agree that his trope was integral to the show, and he needed to be the bad bravado brother, and Stefan the pure and good one. But if that’s the case Stefan needed to be less bad, and Damon had to be more good and not just do good for Elena. Whenever someone would say “Damon’s better with Elena” it never rang true to me, and I wish it had. So YES haha, if you don’t look too closely it was fine, but telling instead of showing, definitely cheap loopholes haha that’s a really good way of putting it. Because when I was younger I got past those a little more, and now I can’t haha. YES. Ok yes. Bonnie was one of my FAVOURITE Damon arcs. Loved that she was like a Caroline to his Stefan. He really did start to become a better character with her. No question about it. And I do love that they stayed platonic (although…. This is a WHOLE other rant sorry. I think Bonnie and Damon could have been *THE* slowburn of the show, Damon always thinking he’s in love with Elena, but it’s actually Bonnie who is straight and honest with him and he learns to appreciate that, and Bonnie who’s always on the backburner and saving everyone else… finally the both of them going from enemies to mutual respect to passion and love. I think it could have been SO well written. And really worked with the dynamic of the show and for their characters. I don’t think anyone would have seen it coming, that Damon who’d been obsessed with Katherine and then Elena had someone kind and good and strong sneak up on him and having him realize that’s what love truly is. And Bonnie finding someone who would recklessly do anything for her for once. Plus I thought they had great chemistry…). And agreed, I preferred the brother story and the friendship story. It’s actually why I preferred DE as friends, they kind of felt like in-laws/family to me haha, they helped one another on the side and were a great team and both loved Stefan. BUT my issue remains I think DE romantically could have been just as great as any friendship had they been better written, but I’m becoming a broken record lol. Elena. Honestly, I see what you’re saying. They showed Elena was more willing to let loose, or at least was able to with Damon (seeing as she often did want to leave for the lakehouse with Stefan to go “far far away” or have him over in secret, or stay in bed longer in the mornings etc.) I’ll give them props for showing those things more with Damon because it did make it feel like it was a part of her being with him that made her more free, with her character building though I just believe she was always that way so I don’t know that it was unique to her and Damon. But that’s actual nitpicking. Overall they didn’t show Elena’s change as a character I’m glad you agree! It took me many many watches to pinpoint why Elena annoyed me as of S4, and it’s because she became less of her own character because the focus was so on DE (this being because they hadn’t properly used S1-3 to develop them… I’m sorry I can’t help it the writing is my pet peeve ha). But yes exactly as you phrased it, we needed to see who she was more on her own with Damon to better compare, everything is assumed because it was told not shown. That’s exactly it. All we see is her not taking care of her brother, her friends saying she’s changed, her not noticing Bonnie is dead, being irresponsible… like I don’t see her become more herself and free… I just see her becoming more and more dependent on Damon and being carefree with him….

So say you don’t FEEL their chemistry not that they don’t have it. S1 Stefan didn't initially tell her about Katherine or Vampirism, but besides that was very honest and good to Elena, and Elena helped him to open up and stop loathing himself and being so closed off. Stefan helped Elena to feel again and to be understood when she felt alone. And though that process wasn't always positive by the end of S1 they were healthy because they made one another better. Their toxicity and complexity was different than Damon and Elena, because Stefan and Elena grew from their issues. They became better, together and as individuals with one another. They didn't just pull a Damon and Elena and say "we're toxic but we can't help loving eachother" and throw character development down the drain.
