You’re the first reviewers to say that Cynthia Erivo was the standout. I saw it yesterday and I agree 100%. Couldn’t take my eyes off Erivo. Erivo made me feel EVERYTHING. She was sublime.

@myautobiographyafanfic1413 It's great that Oz fans can have a moment. I just wish Star Wars fans could get such a treat.
@myautobiographyafanfic1413Ай бұрын
@thehouseofoverthinking Hm, well Star Wars is natively film. I think you're able to have degrees of separation re: Oz. Books that became a movie, a book based on the movie, a musical based on the book. So on. Honestly, I think the only hope for Star Wars is a Flash Gordon-like serial playing between other films.
@thehouseofoverthinkingАй бұрын
@myautobiographyafanfic1413 Yes, you're right. Oz has no sense of true canon, as even the original books are inconsistent within themselves. Of all fantasy worlds, it's probably the most open to evolution and unique takes. Star Wars is a different kettle of fish. I'm not a big SW fan so I don't know a huge amount, but I wish they'd stuck with the original expanded SW universe. The only sequel film I enjoyed was The Last Jedi, and that was solely because unlike the other two, it didn't automatically retread the originals.

I had no plans to see the movie, I was perfectly ambivalent about it. I was asked to go with someone else and I agree: it’s a slow build but the 2nd half of this movie is phenomenal. What a lovely, unexpected empathic gift of an experience

I remember when the first trailer dropped, I actually thought it looked pretty cool, but I had never really gotten into the musical. Which my friends think is blasphemy as I am very involved in community theater and stuff. I heard a lot of the music and mostly knew what the plot was, did want to see the show one day if the opportunity arose, but I wasn’t in the fandom. With all the marketing mishaps and everything behind the scenes, and my other personal doubts I had about the musical, I wasn’t super interested either. Last week my aunt invited me to see it in a group reservation, but I was busy that day so I said no. But now everyone is saying it’s the best thing since sliced bread, bringing back cinema and movie musicals (I know there’s been good ones recently, I like the Spielberg west side story) and that everyone who even appreciates either the Wizard of Oz or musicals in general needs to see it. Anyway finally listened to all of the broadway soundtrack yesterday for the first time, and have plans to go see the film with my Grandma who enjoyed the stage show. I think I’m being converted

Cynthia and Ariana were absolutely sublime casting choices as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively. You need to have a strong onscreen chemistry to make their bond seem all the more convincing, and they both pulled it off with ablomb.

The Ga-linda --> Glinda thing is in the musical, its just harder to catch because the mispronunciation scene is much shorter and has less back and forth. I think the movie makes it more possible to get the joke in a single watch.

i think the flying monkeys were on her side, in the original, elphaba was the one who stood up for them while the animals were being mistreated
@showersinger38Ай бұрын

@timothy4097Ай бұрын
The monkeys aren't on Elphaba's side... for now. The sorceress lady said that they have the monkey's families held captive, so they're forced to obey the wizard's commands. I predict Elphaba will convince them to join her side in part two.

I remember seeing this years ago in London and thinking that the big flying set piece and song (I think it's the end of the first half) was the end of the show. I was horrified that it was only an intermission because I was ready to leave.

I've only seen the movie, but I think the monkeys are chasing after her because they're afraid the wizard will hurt they're families (it was briefly mentioned how they're being held captive by the wizard.) I predict that Elphaba will convince the monkeys to come to her side to fight against the wizard and free their families (idk if that happens in the musical).

2:53 This was something If let as early as the trailers. I’m glad you articulated it. I wanted Oz to feel like an entire world! Not a bunch of sets separated like floating islands. Maybe the second film is better on that front, but we’ll see.

I watched wicked and I liked it over all, but the CGI animals were really ugly in that Lion King remake kind of way. I feel like the world of Oz would have been a perfect opportunity to use puppetry instead. I really wanted to like the bear nanny and the goat professor, but they were just so horrible to look at. I'm not necessarily against CGI characters, I think Paddington looks great, but in the case of the world of Oz, I feel like puppetry would have been a better choice.

My wife and I adored it. They hewed so closely to the musical that it isn’t surprising the pacing was a little off - it had a very “live musical” feel in its buildup. But the set and costume design largely made up for any possible flaws IMO.

I watched the original Wizard of Oz for the first time since I was a kid and it's painful how dated the songs are. The standards for lyrics back then were sooo much lower. I know times change but I feel like a child could've written most of the OG songs.
