I haven't seen this movie, but it's crazy how the cinematography of average 80's movies blows so many modern blockbusters out of the water. I really hope the MCU gets their act together with that one day.

I loved this movie as a kid of the 80s/early 90s. As an adult I appreciate it for what it is-a silly sci-fi comedy that falls into the so-good-it's-bad categories, and I love those. The ironic thing is that it's infamy has kept it relevant. The worst thing for any form of media is to be forgotten, and this movie will NEVER be forgotten!

I remember despising this movie when I first watched it. And I haven't seen it since. As for any other breakdowns or timeline placements, while it would take a LONG time to do the show AND the movies, I would love to see you cover The Incredible Hulk. I think it might be the most likely thing to be relevant to Secret Wars since it was arguably the first widely popular comics adaptation since Superman wouldn't come out for another year. And Lou Ferrigno is still kicking, so I could see them paint him up and stick him in there for a cameo or something.

I remember being shown this film and asking to turn it off because of how incredibly uncomfortable it made me. I was like 6, I’m proud of myself because years later I told my friend (huge marvel fan) the movie existed. He didn’t believe me and decided to look it up and buy the film and watch it in his phone during the whole sleep over. His face at the end said it all.
@AbitofEverything4U8 күн бұрын
Yeah, this movie had alot of uncomfortable moments, tbh. It was so hard to figure out who the audience was supposed to be. You have an oddly polite and G-rated Howard the Duck doing very PG-13 things during the entire movie. The scene at thQe massage parlor was just plain bizarre!

I feel like of the stuff from before the 2000s this and Lou Ferrigno Hulk are the most likely ones to pop up in Secret Wars just because they are decently well known. Lou Ferrigno could need a bit of convincing because he's got a bit of beef with Marvel as he doesn't like their use of CGI for Hulk.

Howard The duck is the best character in the MCU from Guardians of the Galaxy movies. 👉But wait, Howard was in Avengers: Endgame at the end? 👈 WHAT?! I didn't know he was in it, but it was amazing for helping all the heroes to defeat all the villains at the end. Darcy and Howard are married together, and they have a baby, but I don't understand why Darcy delivered the egg, but it was odd. What if Season 1 episode 7 was a cliffhanger it is leaving what part was going to happen of Darcy and Howard. In season 3, episode 4, we all know it was a cliffhanger. But Darcy and Howard are married together, and they have their baby egg, but it was funny how Darcy delivered the egg. But yeah, it was odd. Howard the Duck movie is not PG-13. It goes to PG for little kids and adults, too, but no one don't like it because it was a mistake for Universal. The story it was good for Howard and the human world because he's trapped there. He needs to go back home and longer later. He's trapped in a human world forever because he can't go back. Finally, before the end of the movie. It was all right for Howard for a romance of Beverly.
@AbitofEverything4U7 күн бұрын
That’s a good point that it’s rated PG… But that was I think before they created the PG-13 rating. Because it really should’ve been PG-13 at a minimum… lots of stuff in there that isn’t good for young kids to see.

0:45 I mean I don’t know if we know that happened in the main timeline, because the party Thor episode took place in 2011 right, and he’s in that, when he would have gotten out in 2014 normally. And obviously the branch point is hundreds of years ago. It could be a similar way he escaped in the sacred timeline tho, just not super clear
@AbitofEverything4U6 күн бұрын
That's a really good question. I'm not sure we know when the episode happened in present day of the episode. The branch was waaaaaay back in 965 when Thor was born, but as for when it happens in present day, it's unclear. Either way, we know Howard escaped, so presumably it was in the same manner he escaped in the main timeline. But you could be right that things are very different in the branch.

There was one sketch where this guy went on a political talk show, and he was trying to justify using bullets that traced baby heads. Hehehe! So I actually saw this movie in the theater when it came out, the summer before I started high school, though for the life of me I can't remember why I went to see it, as I really can't imagine myself wanting to go see it at the time -- probably got dragged into it by some friends or something, or we had nothing better to do. And back then I had absolutely no clue that Howard the Duck was a Marvel character, and didn't even learn that until sometime after Guardians of the Galaxy, in which I was confused by his seemingly random appearance there. My reaction to this movie at the time was that it was just really weird and a stupid concept, and I haven't seen it since. So yeah, when I first saw him in GOTG, I was like, what the heck is this weird random character from a bad 80's movie doing there?! Hehe. The more I think about this movie, the better it gets. No, it's not really great, and I doubt plans for a sequel really were in the works, but this was more about just making a movie for fun based on a goofy character from comics. I own the Blu-ray, George Lucas just threw the idea at his friends who helped him on American Graffiti and he helped them on a few of their own projects, too, and so it was just because, and if it was successful, maybe a sequel. There were definitely some issues with production, but I don't think George was super unhappy in that one photo, he's just not very outgoing when in public, he's pretty reserved, and whoever was taking that photo was probably someone he didn't really know all that well. Really this is one of those movies where George would go, "Yeah, not everyone got it, oh well." This is technically part of the Lucasfilm canon of films, it's not all just Star Wars and Indiana Jones, but they're few and far between. There are some rather impressive special effects though. Tilting the whole set of that diner so all the tables go slamming into the door, there's a few times Howard's actually a puppet and they do a decent job hiding some of it, and Phil Tippet's stopmotion creatures for the Overlords, he's one of the best there's ever been. Oh, and I just love the song at the end of the movie. The riffs that sound like duck quacks are incredible! I think they should have Howard the Duck be in Doomsday. Just one suit needs to be made, you get someone to perform in it for a day, and both Lea Thompson and Chip Zien (Howard's voice) are still active actors, so it can be done. You just have them walking down the sidewalk and then Howard looks up in the sky and says, "What the duck?!" It's Doctor Doom and a legion of Doombots coming to destroy the world in order for his universe to survive the upcoming incursion. Or you save Howard for Secret Wars and he gets to show off some of his Duck Fu with MCU Howard the Duck. I don't know how well that'd play, but come on, you have to do something with the characters from the first theatrical Marvel movie.

Great feedback! I agree, the Overlord creature was very well done. And I was impressed with several elements being pulled from the comics, even if they were altered. I do think Howard should have been more sarcastic, as it was weird to see him legit being polite. But otherwise, not a bad movie. And I agree, he totally needs to show up during Doomsday or Secret Wars. Gotta happen!

lol imagine how overbloated its gonna be if they bring back nearly all versions of the marvel characters in secret wars. except for those actors who has passed away
@AbitofEverything4U8 күн бұрын
Oh, I agree with you… I think that if they bring them back, it needs to be a very short cameo. Definitely not time for a long cameos with characters that the general fan base won’t recognize.

ikr? They make Howard's personality G-rated and put him in PG-13 situations the entire movie long!

The problem is poor direction. It wanted to be a cult film and it wanted to be mainstream at the same time. The job of a movie director is to pick one. It could have been more successful either way, but audiences didn't know what to make of it. Your example of Howard's personality is a good one: a few more the details might have been adjusted along with that or else the source material might have been adapted more thoroughly and coherently.
@AbitofEverything4U8 күн бұрын
Excellent commentary! I agree 100% with your analysis. The movie just didn't know what it wanted to be. Was it for kids...was it for adults...was it a thriller...was it a comedy...was it campy...was it to be taken seriously...it was all over the place. Not sure how Lucas could have delivered a film like that after Star Wars and Raiders. Wild stuff!

Only watching this video because I'll never watch this film. Overall it sounds a lot like the Fantastic Four movie in that with a better budget and a better script it could be amazing. I wonder which one George Lucas is more embarrassed by: Howard the Duck or the Star Wars Holiday Special?
@AbitofEverything4U8 күн бұрын
Oh now, that’s a good question… I guess I would have to say the Star Wars Holliday special edges out howard the duck because no part of the holiday special was bearable (other than the Boba Fett appearance perhaps) while howard the duck at least had a few moments that were worth checking out. But yeah, it would be interesting to ask Lucas that question!

Star Wars was George's baby far more than Howard was, so it would definitely have to be the latter. I feel like I have to say that it was his baby in the past tense ever since he sold his baby over to Disney, and we all know how the fans have felt about the franchise today since being in Disney's hands.

I’m pretty sure the topless duck isn’t “anatomically correct” seeing how ducks don’t have mammary glands of any kind. 😅 Also that scene is burned into my brain because I was shown this movie when I was like 11 (and I raised in a Christian household 😬)
@AbitofEverything4U5 күн бұрын
Good point… I should say anatomically correct on duck world. Seems a lot of things are different on that crazy planet. And yeah, I suspect anyone that watched that as a kid would definitely never forget it. Such a bizarre scene to have in the movie and for it to be within the first five minutes, no less. No clue what they were thinking when they did that!

Hit Monkey is such a great animated show that Marvel Studios should've put more effort in promoting, maybe if it gets renewed under Marvel Studios animation division it would get more eyeballs on it! Also I think think the Moon Girl show might be worth discussing more since they've mentioned the multiverse in a consistent way with the MCU and it's a fun show and the second half of season 2 is coming early next month! I had no clue there was an actual Power Pack project in the 90s- that's wild!

This movie makes me think of something interesting. In the beggining, humanity imagined strange fictional places and creatures living somewhere in the world (from Mount Olympus in ancient times to places like Skull Island in early twentieth century) because Earth was seen as so big that it could be believable. By the time Howard the Duck came out, strange places and creatures were usually placed "somewhere in another galaxy", from classics like Star Wars to obscure films like Dinosaur Planet (an obscure movie where dinosaurs evolved in another planet just like on Earth). Because the universe was seen as so big that it could be believable. Nowadays when we want to create fictional universes we don't imagine them in our reality, but in parallel universes. It makes me think that maybe in the future the concept of the multiverse might be seen as too much for the suspension of disbelief of future audiences, just like the first two are for us.
@AbitofEverything4U6 күн бұрын
Fantastic feedback. Yeah, I had the same thought as I was listening to the narration. I was so ready for them to say he came from a parallel universe and instead, it was just waaaaaaay out there in the galaxy. Pretty cool how things have changed now that we understand our galaxy so much better!
