This video is completely pointless. As if the argument that the definition of a weapon hinges on its implementation was something new. Why not impress us all by stating that a nuclear warhead can be a tool to get rid of asteroids... Next step is: "Weapons don't kill, people kill" ... Jeeeez 🙄 ain't that a smart creator.

Exactly... I have a load of weapon-y stuff in my car like axes, hammers, screwdrivers, extension pipes or breaker bars, but if you put me in a situation, do you think that I would bother leaving the comfy seat to clobber you with either? No! I will run you over and job’s a good one... Why are things considered weapons when most solid matter can be employed in a manner that will result in corpses... You can say guns, but again, does it really matter? Yeah, some things are more effective at being a controllable and efficient weapon, but then, being a weapon doesn’t mean it will be employed unless necessary, making most weapons wielded by sane people less weapon-y than a non-weapon can be when wielded by a moron or someone intent on causing harm... Like the already mentioned car as a prime example of a non-weapon weapon which rains death upon pedestrians and others in the hands of someone not thinking straight for whatever reason...

Honestly I'd use a typical nail hammer for both defense and offense. Cuz even if someone puts their arms up to protect the face. That hammer is gonna literally smash the person's arms. And it has hooking abilities. Witch makes it even better if the other person is armed with like a knife or baseball bat. You can hook it mid swing/stab.

KoolestKman that's where the weapon originated for several reasons people weren't able to use actual weapons swords polearms Etc as well as they weren't readily available so people used what they had on hand farm equipment in this case and different specific form of martial arts developed around these weapons as the items themselves evolved from farm equipment to weapons they're modern state you can still buy a hawkbill bladed tool to cut wheat or rice but it's not a fox 479

As a line cook who uses knives everyday as part of my job, I would never go for a kitchen knife if I needed a weapon in an emergency. There are so many other things in the kitchen that would better suit self defense than a kitchen knife, depending on how much damage you want to do. Heck, many cooks I work with have non-kitchen knives on them that would be better suited for that purpose. However it is a pretty dangerous tool. So is a deep fryer, and a meat slicer, so they aren't unique in this regard. When I saw this I immediately though of how no cook would ever use their kitchen knife on anything other than food, mostly because they are expensive and a good kitchen knife is hard to come by. Inversely, even in a pinch, a combat knife like the ones shown here would be completely useless in kitchen. To a degree it is about how you use a knife, but this video is spot on about design dictating function. It also made me think about the fact that although I know a ton about knives that are designed for culinary uses, I'm pretty ignorant on knives in general. Not many people can say that they hold/use a knife for 5+ hours a day most days of the week, but even so I only ever learned what I needed to know about knives, which is how they are used in food production.

@@Alucard-gt1zf I mean. Yes and no. I work in a kitchen too, and most of the time, I've got other various tools around me to use if I really needed to. An eight inch chef knife isn't really designed to be swung around all that well, but a meat mallet? That's got weight, and can do some damage. Plus, if you use your own knife from home, those usually tend to be expensive, and you have to clean them thoroughly if you cut yourself, nevermind someone else. Then the fact it would probably be confiscated as evidence. It's just a case of having so many better options.

"Everything is deadly. Even if I need to freeze it into a bullet and shoot it at you" -my old biology professor On top of that, a weapon is *technically* a tool because a tool is an inanimate object or group of objects used to complete a task. So a _weapon_ is a _tool_ used to complete the _task_ of injuring someone or something. Sure, some are better designed to complete a certain task but if I can't find my mallet I'm gonna use a pipe wrench to straighten out a piece of metal rod. On top of ALL that, these definitions are all a societal construct which in itself is a human construct and only has the meaning we give it, so there's that.

"Some knives are designed as weapons while others are designed as tools" sounds like a very dangerous logic to me. This logic can be used to create idiotic regulations very quickly since no one can clearly define where to draw the line between tools and weapons, and quite honestly I think this line doesn't even exist in the first place. But law makers can create some arbitrary definitions to deem some as tools designed solely to cause harm, or "assault weapons" as they love the term so much.
@Lugermonger35
@Lugermonger35 7 жыл бұрын
9SS94Cr that's actually the reason we have the laws we do in a lot of places the definition of a weapon Beyond double-edged automatic gravity knife ballistic knife it's hard to put a definite separation between weapon and tool the majority of those types of knives being banned in most areas with stricter knife laws excluding the Karambit and let's hope they don't figure that one out

The point of people classifying them as tools is so law makers and police don't pass laws banning the use and carry of pocket knives or that when you get stopped by a police officer a knife in the car isn't enough to give them warrant to search your vehicle because its a tool not a weapon. That's why I haven't got my pocket knives taken away from me in 2 different cases we shouldn't try to classify any knife as a weapon because law makers would definitely make some types illegal like in Canada no butterfly knives or any form of switch blade or gravity knife.

"Tool or Weapon" is a bogus argument. Let me explain: A tool is something build for a direct purpose, mostly to aid in the fullfilment of a certain action, job or task. A hammer is for driving in and pulling out nails for example. So it's a tool, because it was "build/designed for a function". A sledgehammer is also a hammer but different. It is useless in pulling out nails. So is it still a tool? Yes. Yes it is. Because it was build for another function: Aid to smash things. So if you expand this meaning to knives or weapons, a "weapon" is just a broad description for tools that aid in the task of unaliving people or to defend yourself. All weapons are tools, but not all tools are weapons. And yes the designed function does not mean it cant fulfill other functions. A hammer CAN be a weapon. But it never was build to be one. Unless it was a warhammer. Nice Vide btw :D

A weapon is defined as an object which is designed to or used to kill an animal or person. So yes some knives are weapons by design. For example Karambits are weapons, Bowie knives are weapons, and Daggers are weapons. Because all of these are designed with primarily with combat in mind. And the can be in some cases very useful as tools. However a bushcraft knife, a kitchen knife and a hunting knife. Are optimized to be used for other tasks. They are tools. But you'd best believe it would kill you if someone stuck you with a kitchen knife. That said Some knives are tools and some are weapons. But once one is used to harm or kill, It is now a weapon.

The difference between a tool and a weapon is how you use it. Once had a school P.O in an art class making rounds (Middle School) we were given random objects and asked to organize them in to categories. Some people went by color, others by shape etc etc. P.O did his, and when the teacher asked him how he decided it was "things that can be used as a weapon"... a pen, a pencil, hell even the cap to a bic pen could blind somebody if you jammed it in there. Same as guns.. is it a tool for self defense/hunting/competition. or is it a weapon. Depends how you're using it.

As a gun person, this video hits home despite the difference in tool. Guns, while always capable of being used as weapons, can serve a variety of specialized purposes. From sporting, to hunting, to having fun, and finally to harm another human being. Firearms can even be artistic to a certain degree. Take the thompson into account and how it looks when compared to the "grease gun" that later replaced it due to cost. And yet people are so quick to call basically any gun with a pistol grip and a magazine an "assault weapon" like how any knife with a pointy tip is called a "combat knife"

Whats wrong with someone carrying a knife? It is an incredibly useful tool, I use one every day, and carry one of the knives in this video. a Spyderco Paramilitary 2, CPM S45VN steel, with black G10 scales. I love it to death, great fidget factor and all around a good knife, plus with its fine tip it has great self defense capabilities. Also its hilarius that you quote wiki for a definition, not Merriam Webster or another credible dictionary smh.

I am 73 years old now and have carried a knife or tool since I was 11 years old . I have used them to cook , open mail , clean my finger nails ,dress out deer , open Christmas gifts and carve toys . Using and making tools is what makes us human say Funk and Wangles .

Anything can be a weapon, providing you know how to use it as such. My favourite is a pin, just an ordinary tailors pin, but hit the right spot and you'll leave your opponent lying on the floor screaming and peeing himself with a headache that feels like the devil himself is digging up your brains with a jackhammer. It's just a question of knowing how to use it. Even my crutches that I need to get about with, in my hands they are deadly weapons because I trained myself to make it so.

A tool can have many jobs. They always say to have the right tool for the job and I think a knife is a very good tool for opening your mail, but it could also be used for cutting ham, or other kinds of meat for instance. Similarly, a hammer is good for removing nails and bending metal, but can also be used for silencing alarm clocks or other annoying things.

Whats the difference in the act of using these weapons or tools when it comes to harming or even killing someone? No matter if its classified as a "weapon" or a "tool", I would assume the person getting stabbed with it doesn't really care. Trying to justify the difference seems really farfetched.

People gotta label stuff. An m16 and hunting riflr are both dangerous guns, but the m16 is specificaloy buolt to kill people, therefore its classed as a more dangerous weapon. Still wouldnt stop someone buying a hunting rifle and going crazy though.

Hmmmmm... In a practical, real world scene, you are completely correct, however we must remember that law maker live on a different plain of existence than you and I do. This is the kind of logic applied to guns that lead to politicians to try and ban things like barrel shrouds, fore grips, and bayonet lugs. Making the distinction between weapons and tools in a legal scene can lead politicians trying to win votes from the paranoid without doing any actual work to deserve being voted for, to make same of the weirdest laws to try to restrict the former.

In Russia where i live the knife laws are different. There are specific requirements for a knife to BE a weapon ie having a handguard, a thick enough blade, hard enough steel, long enough blade etc. There are exceptions though, like having a double edge or a blade longer then 90 centimeters, those make a it a weapon regardless of other properties.

Beardur here in Italy we have a similar sistem which is based on why you are carrying the knife. Are you going in the woods to look for mushrooms? You can bring a knife as long as it's not foldable and it's not double edged.

i don't think the opening mechanism matter that much, a one handed fast opening help, but is not determinent. just like the shape of handle, a handle that hold your hand during thrust help, but is not enough to deem a knife as a weapon. the blade shape on the other hand... is there any other advantage to double edged blades than penetrating power? is a karambit curved blade that useful out of fighting (i have to admit it's damn nice to open packages, though).

Knives that aren’t fixed blade are pretty much useless as weapons. I honestly would prefer a decent fixed blade over a god teir flip knife. I can’t stand them.

the key point of knife fighting is to keep distance anyway. though, the main reason i prefer bare hands over weapons is because my fist is always at the other side of my arm. knives are good for killing, but if you want to defend yourself and would rather have something in hand, get a baton.
