You make very good points, I often notice that the strict knife laws of the UK make carrying knives (except for non locking folding knives of 3 inch or less blade length, so basically a small to regular sized swiss army knife) illegal in public, causing knife use with legitimate non-violent reasons to become unseen to the average individual, that coupled with the only news they hear about knife use being crime, gradually shapes their view on knives negatively, and creates a knock on effect where more restrictions get introduced. It's a vicious cycle, I am fond of bushcraft and while mentioning to my mother I'd bought a nice quality Gransfors Bruk small forest axe she commented "why are you buying weapons?", I found it worrying that her first thought when she heard the word "axe" was weapon, and not chopping or splitting tool, she has no problems using a cleaver in the kitchen but isn't exposed to outdoor woodchopping so doesn't think about legitimate use.

And there has been many circumstances where I'm very thankful that I've had one on me! You're absolutely right people don't realize how often they would use it if they actually had one. I always always always carry a folding knife in my back pocket daily and a small to medium fixed blade on my belt. It is just as natural to me as putting shoes on and I get just as panicked if I somehow forgot one as I'm leaving the house. This being said my state (Arizona) is extremely liberal with knives and we are allowed to carry essentially everything so I don't think twice about it. However, I have gotten double looks from people when I'm holding something like a package or a snack in plastic and then instinctively pull a knife out, flick it open and proceed to use it only to get people who seem shocked. As if I was waiting to do that, "oh I'm such a badass whipping my knife out" move when in reality I just wanted to eat some beef jerky. A lot of it is based on Hollywood I've noticed. You can pull out say a Buck 110 knife and say the cliché story of, "this was my grandfathers" and someone would respect it because it *looks* vintage and collectable and they usually will ignore the fact that it really could hurt and kill someone. In the same breath you could also pull out say a Spyderco ParaMilitary 2 and because you are use to the mechanics and naturally flip it open faster and (gasp) it has a black handle and looks so "tactical!" that it must be a weapon of evil! That one always bothers me.

Interesting thoughts. I always collected knives to some degree but I only started carrying them in every day life a couple of years ago. Partially because of strict knife laws but aldo because it never occured to me. I opened boxes with my house keys and improvised a knife in other ways. Then I got a job where I always had a knife on me. But in civillian life I kept reaching for the knife I never had because I was used to having it at work. It simply made everyday tasks so much easier. So I figured "Who's going to look in my pocket as long as I mind my own buisiness?" And I started carrying a leatherman. That quickly became a leatherman and a folding knife. I got used to having the right tool at the right time and felt bad when I didnt. After that it got easier to motivate buying new knives because I use them now, I don't just collect them. I recently added some automatics to my EDC rotation. I think about it sometimes, why I carry knives and how my surroundings look at me for doing it. Some people like my wife are a little intimidated by knives, my kids are fascinated, my friends and collegues think I'm a bit silly and call me the knife guy. What it boils down to is that its fun really. If it was about anything else I would have stopped at a leatherman. Only a fellow "knife guy" will get it. I also think your friend is right about society. Depending on where you lived a slipjoint knife or Mora was either in the pocket or on the belt of everyone here in sweden. Its sort of like how no one wears a watch anymore because society has other ways to tell you the time. But recently some people started wearing them again for other reasons than necessity.

That's why I carry two: one full-size heavy duty ready knife and another small edc sheeple-friendly folder, which usually tends to get more use out of. Interesting story here for ya. My mom is the kind of person that gets terrified by knifes. Yet she knows I always carry some utility blade on me. Recently she got diagnosed with cancer and she's undergoing chemotherapy. Whenever I visited her at hospital she aksed me if I have a knife. There was always some sort of cutting task to do. Getting rid of labels on clothing items, opening stuff. Hell, she didn't have any sharp knife at hand to cut a friggin cucumber, only a dull butter knife. And so I bought her a small gentle folder and she's been using it ever since.

I’d say that the CIVIVI elementum in Damascus CF would be a fine funeral knife, same with some of the protech, WE, and ZT knives. Now those are higher end ones but it’s a nice looking knife that works well and fits the color scheme well for a funeral.

Lugermonger, I know there would be vetter knives, but would an OTF be good for everyday carrying.
@colinreilly37017 жыл бұрын
Resolute Cub depends on what you're gonna use it for. Personally, I see OTFs as more of a show piece, but they'd be good for opening packages and self defense as well since the blade design usually lends itself well to stabbing. Just make sure they're legal in your area. I know that in my area, they're legal to own, but you need a concealed carry permit to carry one.
@Lugermonger357 жыл бұрын
Resolute Cub that's a hard answer I would say yes but it's reliant on quality OTF knives can be made very cheaply but the amount of force inside the mechanism from just opening and closing it is a lot of strain on the parts and the tolerances are never tight enough to keep out debris and alike but a high-quality OTF can be stalled out by Gunk but not as easily as you might think and will take a beating for years so it really just depends on the quality of the knife I think for EDC you need something you can depend on but that's where the price comes in high-quality OTF knives are expensive but if you got the money yes it's an excellent EDC option
@jacobkotecki40476 жыл бұрын
If you want to EDC, which I think majority of us would highly recommend, fixed blades or reinforced folding knives are really the only way to go. The reason being that an EDC kit is generally meant to be a practical, simple, kit that is relatively compact and can be used in any number of situations you may find yourself in in Every-Day-Life.

I have a nice folder on me 99% of the time and a Swiss Army Card in my wallet 100% of the time and that card has been the best $20 I've ever spent in my entire life. It has a tiny 1 inch(ish) blade, scissors, a file/screw driver, tweezers, tooth pick, blue pen and a pin. I've used that knife to cut water bottles to make a funnel, cut off loose strings, open a package etc etc etc. Knives are absolutely invaluable in day to day use. Some times I'll go weeks without needing a knife but eventually there's always that one time that a knife is a necessity and other people will regret not having one

@peteg223977 жыл бұрын
It's an interesting point - people who don't carry knives don't need them. And to some extent that's true, they get along fine without them. I live in England, where any knife carry is considered taboo, and people think I'm dangerous or psychotic for carrying a small slipjoint with me. Even my closest friend thought it was weird, until I bought him his first knife. A tiny Victorinox keychain knife, blade barely bigger than one inch. And a few months later I asked him how he was getting on with it, and he says he uses it *all the time.* People think they don't cut anything, and they might not, but a small pointy piece of metal is invaluable for *so* many other tasks. Light prying, reaching something in a hard to reach area, removing a splinter, making a mark in something when you don't have a pen to hand, sharpening a pencil, and of course cutting - tape, cardboard, paper, blister packs. I've seen people use their keys for these tasks, and I've seen people break their keys doing it. I'd encourage everyone to try carrying a small knife, and just realise how useful it is...

there are many ways a pocket knife is useful like being a screw driver, slicing apples bananas ect, opening locked doors if they get jammed, cleaning out a razor ( the little hairs), getting rid of gum or any sticky substance on a surface, getting stickers off of things and so may more ways but, im just trying to prove a point

If you had to pick one out of the half breed and impel what would you pick and why? I would love to hear your thoughts about it.
@Lugermonger357 жыл бұрын
Spiffy spiferson I like the impel it's well-made so light and so small it fits into rolls a lot of other knives don't but the half-breed is awesome a much snappier action a very finely finished grind on the blade it is still small and light but retains that full comfortable four finger grip the impel has a safety which may be a consideration the half-breed does not s35vn vs s30v excellent Steels that's a toss-up for me so while I could see why somebody would prefer the impel but personally it's the half-breed all the way
