These are *Programmers* NOT Record Producers. Making beats alone doesn't neccesary make you a Producer. Two entirely different roles! Think of *Dr. Dre* and *Quincy Jones.* A Producer is like a director in a movie basically that controls the recording sessions. To be a Producer, you need to understand the beginning and the end, arranging the vocals, collaborating with the Vocalist, Engineer and Musicians, monitoring the situations to make sure the the mix is sounding right and all the balances are there, coaching the Artist making sure they are delivering the right engery performances, making sure that that enessence isn't lost. Its basically bringing a song togther as a finished product. It takes having a great ear to be a Producer and knowing how to get a song to the next level. Some Producer's are hands on in the Songwriting and Arranging process while some are completely hands off. *Sean Diddy Combs* is a hands off Record Producer as he's not necessary the guy that program but knows how to get a great Vocal performance out of an Artist and bring a song to the finish line. He's that dude that sits behind the mixing board calling the shots talking through a talk back mic. *Dr. Dre, Teddy Reily, Rodney Jerkins, Scott Storch, Timbaland, Pharrell Williams* are hands on Producer's that wears more than one hat in the studio. Basically it combines the classic record producer role as the director and an accompanied Programmer, Musician, Writer, Arranger. They are reffered to as *Producer / Songwriter's.* They don't just sit around on their asses all day and just program beats, they produce the record in the studio with the Artist that sees it all the way to the final mix stage as a complete song.

Ohhhh man, the lack of distinction brought up in your initial comment has lead to a LOT of confusion in the pursuit of such a profession. Case in point, I was talking with a band the other night about possibly doing their album and had to explain that no, I'm not going to be making beats or anything, nor will I be running the console... sure, I may contribute a bit to those things, but that's not what my job would be. Then having to actually justify me being there because everything they thought a producer did just went out the window and it just seemed like I was going to be some guy just standing around the studio doing nothing. Essentially, I told them that if the album was a movie, I'd be the director... then actually broke it down to them what it is an actual producer does and used some real world examples. Now they're mulling it over as a band if it's worth having another guy in there, when the studio owner/engineer offered to do all of that for them. Jaja, I know what that means, but I figured they could learn what that means on their own, lest I sound overly confrontational or something.

Can someone help me. I am very musically inclined I play guitar ,bass, keys, harmonica and trumpet. I listen to every type of music. Definetly including hip hop. I was trying to figure out what equipment I should get to start producing/making my own beats. I have a laptop I know that helps for recording but I don't know what soundboards/mixers to get. Thanks in advance.
