The first Trident motor was developed by Bert Hopwood and Doug Hele in 1964, a running prototype (the P1) was ready in 1965. Hopwood and Hele worked on the Trident project in secrecy in their spare time. When Hopwood and Hele eventually showed the P1 to Edward Turner, he said that there wasn't a need for a motorcycle with more than two cylinders, so the three cylinder motor project was shelved until BSA / Triumph heard rumours that Honda was developing a Four cylinder engine. They quickly produced the BSA Rocket 3 and the Triumph Trident, these machines were released to the public in 1968. The Honda CB750 was released in 1969. If Turner had given the go ahead for the Trident project in1965,it would have predated the Honda four by four years, that would have given BSA / Triumph enough time to develop a SOHC or even a DOHC triple. The Trident could have been similar to the Laverda triples which came along in the 1970's, the Laverda Jota was the fastest production motorcycle when it was introduced in 1976.

mentioned all the main competition except the sv650? hrmmm can't wait to see that head to head. Stoked these are available in Thailand and it is high on my list, but so is the SV650 which for some reason Suzuki's aren't popular here so they are quite hard to find.
@nickstick183 жыл бұрын
I say this as someone who owns a 2019 SV650. The Suzuki is a much more "basic" bike. There's no rider modes, the suspension is cheaper, and it's running an engine that's largely been unchanged since 2003. I much prefer the styling on the SV650, though, especially mine with the grey tank and red frame. It just looks cool as hell. The Suzuki is a lot cheaper too. I don't know what dealers are letting the Trident go for, but I was able to walk out with a brand new 2019 SV650 ABS in late 2020 for $7,500 CAD cash out the door (taxes included). That's $6,100 USD, waaay below MSRP. The Trident is listed at $9,000 CAD MSRP for the non-ABS model. I wouldn't call it an unfair comparison, but you have to ask yourself if the nicer suspension, rider modes, and the styling are worth that much more money to you.
@MT-gh9hs3 жыл бұрын
@@nickstick18 Ah some great points thanks for the reply. In Thailand the prices aren't that far apart actually, mainly because I think the Suzuki is an import where the Triumph is manufactured here. I think they get a break on duties because of that. The SV650A starts at 289,000 baht, where the Trident 660 starts at 309,000 baht. I missed a chance at a used sv650 at about half price of new (uncommon here as things tend to hold their value more for all products). Another consideration are a bunch of Monster 795's available 2nd hand for 100-150k Baht.

Bit of an odd one for me because my heart is set on the XSR700 - even though suspension and brake spec isn't as good as the Trident, but that engine is so so fun, the looks are a perfect mix of neo and retro for me. And the difference in build quality between MT07 and Trident seems to be greater than XSR700 and trident. Also the apparent inability to to much in terms of light touring with the trident due to poor luggage space (will see what aftermarket does) is a bit of a kicker for me even though I mostly commute. Additionally, I'm from Australia and I've heard that unlike the XSR700 and others, they can't be derestricted - and triumph won't be shipping a full power version. I can definitely appreciate the trident as being a great bike for the price etc but between the points I mentioned already and the looks not being as retro as I'd like, I'm finding myself leaning towards the XSR700 as I'll also be able to get one second hand for cheaper. Also XSR900 seems like too crazy a machine for me, I think I'd prefer the more playful yet relaxed character of the XSR700. What do others think?

What about the sv650? I’m having a hard choice between these two. The sv650 is almost 2k cheaper but just doesn’t look as good I really like that 3 cylinder sound along with styling

I was so super lucky that the dealer down the road from me has two coming in next week, and I was able to snag a deposit on that matte black boi!! But my impatience is killing me. At least I have yammie to soothe the soul!

He keeps stating that New trident is going to retail around $8000 American however every dealer that I have spoken with in southeastern Michigan says you’re looking at about 10 grand out the door when looking at my money what I can get For $1000 more I think AKTM would be the ticket

I would really like if they offered an accessory rear fender that encloses more of the rear wheel.

I drove the Trident once. Can someone PLEASE explain to me why on earth there is a 0.25s (feels like eternity or more like 0.5s) lag when revving/giving gas until the engine reacts? In that time my cb650r is at about 4k rpm. (Both limited to 35kw)
@luehrsiboy3 жыл бұрын
Maybe you had rain mode on.. even thoug there might be a lag, you can get rid of his. Get the bike to somebody who knows how to map it
@dariohunkeler80633 жыл бұрын
@@luehrsiboy It is not my bike. It is my friends and I told him it feels unnatural. He had to go to the triumph dealer anyways and asked. He wasn’t in rain mode or bad mapping. It is just how the bike behaves, my friend told me. I still don’t believe that you cannot change it, because it feel really bad compared to my CB650R… maybe a 4 cylinder bike is more responsive and revs faster, I don’t know. But for me it is unacceptable.
@drummer12films3 жыл бұрын
@@dariohunkeler8063 It’s by design. it’s been mentioned it has a lag and almost fake feeling throttle. It’s for beginners to not whiskey throttle I guess. I’m positive a good tune would correct it though.

Why did you(and pretty much everyone else) avoid comparing it to SV650? It also has linear throttle response, breaks have been upgraded to 4 pot calipers since 2019, exhaust tone is as good or even better(depending on preference) and where I live it costs significantly less then the Trident.

Thanks for a great video YAM! Really love your videos... even when not looking for a new bike... great way to clear my mind on a launch break 👍👍😎 I have a question about CB650R vs Trident You tested both CB650R 2021 and the Trident (actually any input for all commenters will be appreciated 🙏) I'm looking for an all-rounder commuter do-it-all (Can't afford a garage full of "options") You rode & tested both, any thoughts/recommendations? I'm currently deciding between those two... Test drove the CB and will the Trident soon Any info will be appreciated **The CB650R usually cheaper, but currently I got a deal from my local dealer which makes even more - about 2000$ cheaper than the Trident in my country, with this in mind is the Trident still even worth considering?** Thanks!

You should really compare this to an xsr700 rather than MT07
