As a Trident owner who has put thousands of miles on it, your last point was your best. If you are a newer/returning rider, get the Trident. As for a major disagreement while the platform may be completely new. The components are very much not. This 660 engine has been on the market for years, it is a shorter stroke 675. I would also say if you plan on doing anything more aggressive than stoplight to stoplight pick the Trident. Just a better platform to do so with a bit more premium components. Either bike will brighten your day!
@AppleGonCrumble3 жыл бұрын
@yolo i would consider twisty roads at a "spirited" pace sporty. A super common complaint of the mt-07 is that the front suspension isn't very firm or confidence inspiring in a corner (people will often compare it to a pogo stick). The tires that come stock on the Trident are also a great compound on the sidewalls that provide great grip (Michelin Road pilot 5s) and I know that the previous year model mt07 came with a pretty cheap set of tires that you wanted to wear out as quick as possible and replace immediately but maybe that is an issue they fixed. The slipper clutch is a massive lifesaver if you are riding aggressively and accidentally dont rev match perfectly because it will not cause the back wheel to skip and bounce, the Trident has this and it is almost a deal breaker for me in the future if my next bike has one or not.
@aura_daddy3 жыл бұрын
thanks for your input
@AppleGonCrumble3 жыл бұрын
@yolo no no, maybe I didnt make my point well enough. I think the Trident does the twisties better. I think why people say the Trident is "for beginners" is more the way it delivers its power and the way you can make it more manageable with things like rain mode. I also think it is for more advanced riders who enjoy dragging knees because the suspension is more set up for it than the mt07. Did that make it more clear?

OC: I think you nailed it. I have been riding 2 wheels all my life, it seems. I started on an old “mini-bike,” the kind I think you probably can’t even get anymore. Briggs & Stratton engine, all steel, and no safety. Culminated in a Suzuki GSX-750F in 1990. I kept that bike until July 2020. Now I ride an SV650. On paper, the old Katana was a better bike. Engine, suspension, everything. But I’m MUCH happier with the SV650, because it can dart around better with its torque down low. The Katana, even with the larger engine, being 4-cylinder, had to get well up in the rev range to really cook. It would really cook, but it just wasn’t as much fun. I don’t have nearly the experience that you and all the ‘tubers have with multiple bikes. But I’m happiest with quick, usable torque.

I went with MT-07 2021 myself, however for any speculants in the future trying to make a decision, here's some things that really bother me: 1. No slipper clutch, as explained in the video - it can get scary if you're pushing the bike and make aggressive downshifts, I come from a racing background and roll up to corners in high speed before downshifting and I've lost traction multiple times to the point I'm not comfortable pushing it to the limit anymore. I've considered either putting a slipper clutch on it for safety or changing bike for this alone. 2. The quality.. while in a general sense it doesnt feel like a low quality bike, there's a few things that bother me. One is that there's a ton of plastics, the blinkers easily pop out when I put the cover on my bike but it's also saved them however when I slipped during a stoplight while it was raining and almost dropped the bike, it popped in rather than broke. The fuel tank is also of plastic and the center piece kind of easily gets scratched. The other thing is the gas wire (throttle body?), it's ENTIRELY exposed on the engine and doesn't even have a cover.. just feels wrong? And that's pretty much it.. I still love it but I often glance at CB650R for reasons above or swapping to supersport but I know myself and I may get too tempted to ride in traffic like I would on the track - the MT07 keeps me in check while still giving me a smile while riding to work.

I absolutely agree ,.. the trident 660 might even be better motorcycle in terms of finishes ,.. softer ,.. softer and also very beautiful ,.. but if you prefer fun , joy , good reliability and economy ,..in this aspect the mt 07 is much better in my humble opinion ,..cheaper to own and buy and it offers much more than what you're expecting from this great little bike, it's more a matter of personal taste and what you want to feel riding on each one of them,.. I opted for the mt 07 model. 2020 and I think it's one of the best in its category,.. very light and agile and very powerful makes riding very fun and safe., but for those who want something different and better equipped, the trident 660 is also a good bike!

Electronic features, the Yamaha only has abs and does not have a bunch of electronics that I have no use for and only make it more complicated and possibly failure prone, ktm comes to mind. Country of manufacture, Thailand vs Japan. Oh yeah number four, it's a hoot to ride!

I’ve ridden both and own the fz07 and I think the triumph is a better bike overall. But something about the fz07 makes me keep coming back to it. The triumph is so smooth and while it’s a nice bike to ride, the fz07 is a blast to just jump on and rip around the city.

I have ridden both and definitely Triumph. Well MT-07 is great, it's punchy, it's jumpy, love to wheelie (which I can't yet, I would have been doing it when I was 18, but I didn't ride for 12year so I can't do it now) and it is really fun bike. But it's the only bike from Yamaha that remains on standard forks, not USD here and it's just wrong. The suspension is really good on Trident compared to MT-07. Then I hate that dash is on handlebars because it is too close to the body and it's hard to look forward and see it. Trident has awesome dash, even better with the BT module. Overal build quality and accessory options speaks for Trident, even-thought it can quickly become almost 2000USD (here in Czech Republic) more expensive than MT-07, but then you have quick shifter, frame protector, fly screen, bluetooth module, USB charger, tank pad .... well but it will probably never be such hooligan bike like MT-07 :). I would have hard time deciding if MT-07 would be maybe a same price like Trident but had at least better suspension and quick-shifter and maybe some basic TCS. Will be picking my new Trident hopefully next week :)

OC: I really like this take as a whole. Picked up my 19' MT07 a couple months ago now and during that process I was having to make the decision between it and potentially a trident. I think you summed up a lot of the points that I also was feeling which inevitably made me go the Yamaha route. It is my first big bike after graduating from a Grom (miss tf out of that thing. Will own another ASAP) During my decision process the fact that the FZ/MT platform proven solid was a big thing that put me on in the first place. Like you mentioned with Yamaha putting the CP2 in a number of their other bikes. It is proven quality on a number of levels from fun and power to reliability and aftermarket support. I have also simply been aware of the platform for longer, having watched all the motovlog guys talk about it essentially since the platforms debut in the 2015/16 days. Its also hugely that feeling thing you talked about. The bike looks amazing to me and sounds even better. I definitely think the Trident would be a worthy option, but very similarly to the overall idea I feel this video was touching on is the MT is simply its own beast and to me the Trident seemed like a "safer" bike in a sort of boring way. Sort of like the version of the MT that my dad would buy. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but the MT is just a more exciting bike, just as you said. I am excited to get on this bike every time I take it out. Even if it is just the couple miles to work.

The Trident is proven reliable to, it’s just a destroked 675, which are know reliable, especially under heavy abuse. People track Daytonas and stack insane miles of hard riding on them. The MT07 looks to immature, the XSR700 looks way better. My biggest complaint of the CP2 Yamaha is the chassis is just not great. If they beef the chassis up and make say an SP model with inverted adjustable forks and a good rear shock I’d strongly consider an MT/XSR. The new MT09 has a pretty good chassis and suspension setup especially with the SP, Yamaha should give the MT the same treatment

Triumph has been in the 600ish triple game for a long time (longer than the CP2 has been around?). So the reliability concern doesn’t really make sense to me. I've tested the MT07 and it was incredible, but also a little scary. I've done all my tests on a Z400 and a MT03, so the MT07, even when restricted to 47HP, has A LOT more punch, specially down low. I wanted to test the Triumph but my dealership doesnt have a restricted one to test. Tomorrow i'll test the CB650R, which is the best looking naked middleweight, IMO. But I think i'll go MT07. I kinda like that it scared me, haha.

OC: I would be more interested in the MT07 if Yamaha would put a better fork set on it. I have entertained both as my next bike, and honestly, the Trident has a lot of things I like, but for enjoyment I think the MT would be more fun.. just the forks...😬
@KrazyKanucker3 жыл бұрын
I'm hoping the 2022 MT has the sp option with better forks like the mt09 or if a tracer 700 will be coming to Canada. If no I'll probably get a used mt07.

In the end its the perspective of own experience and use case. I did chose the Trident as a beginner in the mid 40s exactly for what you described, incl. Ride by Wire and all this stuff. If i would be maybe 10 / 15 years younger i would have probably made a other choice.

I’ve have a 2016 street triple 675 for a year now and love it. But I’m starting to lean towards a Mt10 now for the sole reason that I live in a area where the closest triumph dealer and mechanic is 200 miles away…. Love my triumph though!

The Trident is head and shoulders above the Yamaha. The engine is not what you said. It's the old Daytona's engine. Very well known and tested. This is why Triumph gave it a 10,000 miles between services. These two bikes are almost the same price but not at all in the same class. The smooth ride of the Triumph, its overpowered engine, the quality of the parts, its full range of equipment place it significantly above the MT07. Of course, you're right, the MT07 is a play bike. It's more fun. It's not for serious riders. It's for weekend riders. But if you're looking for a great commute bike, it's not the right bike. Now, I'm not sure why you're pushing the MT07 so hard. It sounds like you got something from Yamaha.

Good Video! Its a very tough decision!, the Trident is cooler no doubt about that, but all my bikes have the transformer styling, I don't like round headlight bikes as a rule. I so want a triple too they sound so much better! arghh I still don't know. You make some good points about the MT but I don't accept the after market stuff there is a TON of Trident stuff already. But I do ride like a hooligan ( like you) so the MT suits that. ERMM I want the trident with the MT lights, someone make that happen!

Man that dash looks so much cooler and sleeker than the new "iPad mini" that they slapped on there. Dunno why everyone is obsessed with TFT displays. The older LCD's look better IMO and they do everything you need.

Mt07 is a simple bike with immense burst of power, the parallel twin is a versatile engine which makes it very easy and handy in any speed you're at. However if you prefer high revving engine then it's not for you.

I 100% agree that MT07 is overall a better choise BUT, as not a begginer so much as unexperienced rider i can not tell how many times my CBR250r saved me from accidents becouse i was commuting more than speeding thanks to it's tamed nature. So now that i'm jumping to the 600+ category hands down the Trident 660 is going to be the perfect bike for me right now, plus it looks way better in my eyes than the MT07.

If you look at the power curve of the mt03 and compare it to the trident and mt07 it would predict the mt03 is more similar to the trident than the 07 wherein the power is delivered in the higher part of the rev range. So you might want to take that into consideration.

The Triumph looks like nothing else out there right now. The mt looks like every other naked bike, like someone wrapped aluminum foil around an engine and crinkled the hell out of it, then painted it. I'm an admitted Yamaha fanboy too after owning (and soon will own again) an 04 FZ1 that was a beast. To each their own obviously but the Triumph has a style that sets it apart from the endless crinkle bikes and that's refreshing to say the least.

Thanks for your video, it's very helpful. Nevertheless, MT 07 is a playful fun bike with relax throttle and engine sound. While TRIDENT is also a fun bike with hypermotard mind, responsive throttle and crazy engine sound. However, trident match my life style.

It's really not possible to question the reliabiliry of a detuned Triumph triple engine compared to the CP2. In fact, it should because the power is so relatively low, last much, much longer. The MT07 bits (and those of the Triumph) will wear out sooner. Ive had an MT, I adored it, until it was stolen. The chassis was totally rubbish, however, and actually made me seasick on a bike ! - And not always at high speeds. That isn't a small flaw, it's a gaping oversight by Yam. I'm sure the Triumph won't do that.
@paintup463 жыл бұрын
The Yamaha is an incomplete bike. You’re paying for the motor. The triumph is a well rounded machine. Looks, build quality, dash, suspension. The Yamaha is behind in all of that.

I am in search for a first bike and as far as i have drove few of them (mt07, xsr900, z650, cb650r, Ducati Scrambleer) my opinion is: Would say that MT07 is fun bike - torque is on low end, sound is good, really easy to maneuver, but the front suspension is shit for reals. If you have an emergency braking and you hit ABS bike suspension will jump you up and if you are inexperienced driver you can start panicing because the bike will brake in much longer distance. Also the cosmetics compared to trident is not as good. Would say cool bike for city riding. It goes to both MT07 and Z650 they both are so jerky bikes... there is some fun in that, but i guess as a second bike or used one to have some fun... Have not driven the Trident but now as i have watched tons of videos and forum research on this bike, i feel like this is the one. Has the looks, like the british theme, sounds like sports car, has the linear power including low end torque. All the electronics you would love to see on bike. Would think the fornt suspension also should be much better... But anyhow i have to test it before... Also a conclusion what i have now after driven different type of bikes, it really depends on what driving characteristics you like. As i said imo Yamaha is cool city bike. But im looking for a bike that i can go smooth in city and b-roads/higway. Was considering a CB650r, great bike, good design, looks and feels more premium than MT07, have better parts, but lacks low end torque and feels like its right place not in the city considering the weight and maneuverability . And now im looking very strongly in Tridens direction - i think it sits right in the middle of MT07 and CB650R not even mentioning electronics.. Would love to see if in 2024 MT07 had upgraded front suspension, then it would be different story :)

i have the TRIDENT since April. MT-07 not available in my country but even if it was, i would've gotten Triumph-Triple (inline-3). over Cross-Plane Twin (CP2) / Straight-twin Cranks (parallel-twin / vertical twin).

i would go with a V2 (V-twin, Superduke) or L2 (L-twin, Ducati Monster, Panigale 955) over Straight/Parallel/Vertical/Inline/Flat TWINs. If 900-950cc bikes are concerned, i would consider Monster (937cc L-twin) over MT09 (triple, CP3) or 890 Duke (inline-2) & F900R (inline-2) & Z900 (inline-4)

Had a new 2017 MT for 4 years, changed tyres and suspension almost immediately. OE stuff was terrible. Engine braking was annoying , activated the ABS. 4 winters needed a lot of ACF50 as frame / fittings hates UK weather. The bike was light , manoeuvrable , infectious power delivery and accidental wheelies. Decided to change for a Trident in March , 3500 miles later and it’s such a wonderful machine. Light, manoeuvrable, power is subtle, sublime triple roar. Powder coat , aluminium and stainless fixtures, braided brake lines, LED. I know Yamaha have raised the game , but Triumph have come into this middle weight market and have nailed it. 60 MPG (UK) Gallons 😁 - which is a little better than I got with the MT.
