I think 14 minutes discussing specifications (which we can all read online) and only 4 on how they feel to ride (which we can't read online) is out of balance.

Had the MT for 4 years , moved to Trident this March, done 4000 miles . It’s that good. Exhaust- MT OE pipe is quiet and just purrs. Had a straight through pipe and it was just to loud. OK for short blasts but annoying on long runs. If you don’t set up the fuelling it doesn’t feel so smooth. Trident sounds great as OE . From 6000rpm it rasps gloriously. I think an open pipe would be actually too loud and would soon be tiresome. MT Suspension - upgraded immediately to Maxton. Soft , wallowing, disconnected OE. Definitely not designed for 90kg rider. Powering out of roundabouts , back end so loose. Trident - Showa. This ‘budget’ unit is great and chassis feels solid. Not needing to upgrade , maybe after 20000miles / 3 years. Freshen it up. Rides like it’s on rails, but can be harsh on some of our really shitty pothole roads MT - Brakes. Just a bit soft and lacking bite. Upgrade with better pads and lines.ABS cuts in too quick on the rear and when on heavy engine braking. Trident- Solid feel, braided lines. ABS really smooth and doesn’t cut in on downshifts. Slipper clutch is great. Quickshifter on Trident is a must . Brilliant on downshifts. 2 to 6 upshifts from higher revs the better. Absolutely brilliant fun. Holding the throttle wide open and flicking up the gears , it’s infectious and really brings out the exhaust note. Note : Turning of the TC makes the process wild. It will lift. Rider Modes. They work well. Rain is good, TC does make a positive difference. Watch out if you change settings within the modes, you can accidentally set rain settings into the road mode. Then wonder why you have slow throttle and TC comes on everywhere 🤣 Remember to reset to factory. Overall I like the style, engine and brand. Fixtures, fittings and finish is top quality. Safe ride.

I have done a lot of touring on my MT07 with the furthest being Croatia and Slovenia from North Devon. It is a great country lane Sunday ride bike as well. I regularly get 80+ MPG if I stay within the speed limits. I think it was a mega good deal at £6300 in May 2017. 18,000 enjoyable miles.

I like the CP2 and Yamaha build a nice reliable bike. But I'd go for the Triumph personally, because aside from preferring its looks and triple feel/sound. It also has traction control, a slipper-clutch, rider modes, and 10k service intervals; which are a lot of key advantages, for very little extra money.

I really don’t know why people keep think that the MT-7 is more powerful and faster than the Trident. I own 2 bikes, and I can be sure with you there is NO WAY a MT-07 could beat the Trident. The power of the Trident is super smooth and absolutely feels like a liter bike while the MT-07 may be just a small cc bike feeling.

Only rode the Trident recently and overall I liked it. I agree with you about the brakes - they do the job, but I would have liked a bit more power. The initial throttle opening is a bit soft for me (I know this bike is aimed at riders who probably haven't been riding as long as I have), but once above 4000 rpm, it was fantastic. Sounds brilliant too. The MT-07 feels agricultural in comparison, especially at low revs, but like the Trident, sounds brilliant on full chat. As you eluded to, it will probably come down to looks and price - personally I like both and the price of the Trident is pretty competitive, if a tad more than the Yamaha. Great video as usual Bob, keep up the great work.

Speaking personally, I really don't like the looks of the MT, and it's not because of the modern looks, I've no problem with that, it's because of the awkward way the hoses, pipes and frame meets in the middle of the bike. It looks a mess. That's one of the best things about the new R7. The fairing hides it all!

For having ridden both extensively, I see a much starker contrast between the two, it could be down to where I live being mostly mountain roads (French Alps). But to me, the MT has a pretty bad chassis, that doesn't inspire confidence, the braking (on the 2020) was significantly worse on the MT. I'm not a heavy rider (under 75kg equipped/165lbs), but the MT gets willowy very easily. And despite its softer suspension, it's less comfortable on most roads, than the Trident. And speaking of comfort, the seat on the MT is pretty bad too, after an hour of riding, I'm in pain, whereas I can last two hours on the Trident before I feel any form of discomfort. On the other hand, the knees are more bent on the Trident, controls feel a bit higher, which does become a problem after 4 hours straight (yeah I know it's dumb to ride that long). The Trident requires a slightly taller rider on stock seat than the MT does. The Trident also feels much more nimble on twisty roads, brakes give a lot of confidence, and the engine feels as torquey as the CP2, but it revs much higher and sings much better on stock pipes. In terms of fuel economy, it's dead even, I've been just under 4L/100km on both and near 6/100km on both, though because the Trident is smoother at very low revs, I tend to be lower overall in daily riding. Two things I'd like to mention about the Trident: the fly screen does help, and traction control does trigger quite often on strong hairpin exists (probably because it would lift the front wheel on acceleration alone in 2nd gear) In conclusion, I'd say that if you live in a very flat area with nice roads, gentle corners or do a lot of city riding, the MT is absolutely fine. But if you want to ride aggressively, have a lot of tight corners, mountain roads, the Trident is way better there. Both would benefit from after market exhausts though, and only the MT has real options right now (at least for street legal stuff).

Agreed - if you give it plenty of gas it livens up, but it's much more manageable than most other bikes around town. Perhaps adding a sport riding mode with a livelier throttle map would have kept some people happy? But then you're starting to make it as functional as the Street Triple R...
@jackgirote9132
@jackgirote9132 3 жыл бұрын
@@motobob It would have made some people more happy but, those people should buy a more performance geared bike. This is the entry level bike for triumph, they want people to upgrade. They probably kept the trident a little more tame to usher people towards the street triple as you mentioned. Anyway, I am very happy with the Trident. Value for the money, I am overall satisfied except for a few cheaper looking parts. Aftermarket will fix that right up though.

I think the price point is super important at this market segment and Yamaha knows that well. Triumph will be able to carve their niche for less cash-strapped buyers, but that will be a small amount. If Yamaha would update the XSR 700 to compete on the "less modern" looks area, they could really give Triumph a run for their money also in the looks department. I've seen the MT-07 in person and it's much better looking than videos and photos. The viewing angle is very different and makes a big impact on the image. The MT-07 loses on the way it looks in pictures, but prudent buyers would go out and see (if not test) both and would be able to realize that. All in all I think the Yamaha has the edge, and I own both brands so no preference from me for either.

its a good video, specifically for someone like me looking to get back into Bikes after 7-8 years off. The MT07 would be a preferred choice for commuting and the occiasional bit of fun, with so many sold i would hope more choice in the used market too

You'll spend tons of $$$ in mods to improve the Yamaha, which is a value brand at the end of the day. The more premium brands like Triumph, KTM, BMW etc are usually ready out of the box, needing little change.

The Triumph looks great apart from the "Euro-style" rear numberplate and indicator hanger. There are quite a few new bikes (including Benelli) which have taken on this method of mounting these items. That said, like most things it'll probably grow on us over time?

Both good solid bikes in there way but the Trident is more accomplished in my mind, on refinement and tech alone. Just got my custom seat from CM seats Uk for my Trident and looks fantastic. No more numb bum from the stock seat. Also for Information to other trident owners Hepco and Becker Germany do luggage and racks, both rear and panniers. Also MRA Germany do a screen so the Trident is more than capable of touring. I’ve not long returned from my Scotland tour (NC500) and covered 1150 miles with a Oxford dry bag strapped to the rear. No problem at all.

It’s like being forced to choose between two lovers. Rode the Triumph the one I took out was buzzy in the handlebars to the point of annoyance and while I didn’t care for that at all it’s easily cured. I am a huge fan of the Yamaha series in the MT line though and I have no shortage of dealerships for either one. It’s a hard call I’d be more than happy with either of them. Really need to get a hood ride in on the MT07

I know the bike is still pretty new but how are Triumph's in comparison of ownership maintenance? I really like the look at style of the 660. But I want something low maintenance and reliable. Not something with ..... awkward nannies. I've been interested in bikes from MT-07/09/10, CB1000 650/1000, XSR 700/900, Z650/900. This 660 looks appealing as well

@12:49 I'm going to say the Triumph sounds like a toddlers play lawn-mower, the Yamaha sounds a tad better but still sounding like a lacky. Both bikes definitely need to have the exhaust tone brought down at least 4 octaves. I'm guessing here that most like the idea of sounding like they are on the track, But for those that want the sound of a 117 hp muscle bike, both bikes are going to need to sound like one rather than an angry hornet when at the stop light. Stay Safe

My 2 cents on my MT I had been commuting on for 18 months, it is a do everything bike but I don't love it. Its strength is its own weakness. It is foolproof motoring because everything is built down to a price and cheaply and easily replacible. I had to replace bolts and screws because of rust but a set of them fron ebay cost $15. The bike has a split personality. Below 30-40% throttle it is a docile thing. It is lightweight and easy to move around busy traffic. Keep the rev in the upper half and it is an animal. Ride this way you would easily lose your license. One test that the MT fail is the carpark test. When you see your bike in a carpark do you think it is a stunning machine? I don't. I would love to replace it with 2 bikes instead... if the mrs allow.

I like the new Yammie motor, and would love an XSR700 or R7, or both.... Between the 2 in this video, the Triumph wins.... the MT bikes just look like 2 wheeled space bikes to me. That Triumph looks SWEET for a modern naked bike. May have to see if there's a dealer near me anywhere.

I honestly have no idea why people criticise the looks of the MT-07 so much. I saw both of these bikes riding around today and the Yamaha in my opinion looked better. The trident looks great don’t get me wrong but to me it just looked like a slightly bigger moped - the MT-07 is a lot more aggressive and sinister looking, but different strokes for different folks I guess

The Triumph is light years ahead of the MT-07 in every possible way. And I will say I've never been a fan of Triumphs though we have had two of them in the family. My partner has the Trident 660. So, my reasoning: I've ridden both bikes and although the MT-07 is a good example of what it is it's also built down to a price: Dated clocks, really cheap switchgear and on overall air of cheapness. That doesn't necessarily make it a bad bike it just is what it is. The Trident though exudes quality. The smooth three cylinder engine, Triumph fit and finish, quality components, superb handling. Triumph have scored a winner with this bike. Put it another way, if it had a 1000cc engine and 120bhp I'd have one in my garage tomorrow. The Trident is in an altogether different league from the Yamaha.
