My father was a Internal medicine doctor . He was in the frontline passed away from Covid. I hope to become a doctor like him He absolutely loved his job and he was so humble and caring. He went the extra mile for all his patients he didnt have favourites. He was just that kind of man that didn’t care of materialistic possessions but just supported his family out of poverty and was a father figure for many. Internal medicine is a very demanding specialty he had almost no rest but he died for what he believed in Thats what I truly believe. He knew the sacrifices that came with people a doctor. I'm an avid watcher of your channel and I'm not even pre-med, but pre-nursing! But now thanks to this vid, neurology (specifically neuro-critical care), has skyrocketed up in my top list of possible specialties I'd like to go into. Also suffering from chronic and very painful migraines and receiving such effective and compassionate care from my neurologist, neurology has a special place in my heart.

When I was in training, a physician-patient presented with a CC of "I think I have a pheo." I gave no indication of the skepticism that he expected to confront and proceeded with the workup. Sure enough, the only one I've ever seen...left side...benign. Then there was the time when an internist who had been one of my students told me about a new pt. who presented concerned about the new darkening of lines on the palms of her hands. On it goes. They're out there.

I’ve always wanted to be in internal medicine. Ideally I want to sub-specialize in Rheumatology and act as a primary care doctor for those with more complex case files… autoimmune disease, chronic illnesses, etc. My parents both passed away when I was young (at different times) of a combination of unusual disorders and I watched how much they were ignored, passed off, and even accused of being crazy. I want to be a patient advocate: teaching people how to be informed about their care and also harassing specialists basically. I also couldn’t imagine a life where I’m not constantly learning and also constantly arguing with people. So. It fits

As a previous IM doctor and current Cardiology fellow , IM is the Specialty that you don't want to stuck in for many reasons : - Every one expect you to be perfect in each aspect in medicine , which is impossible , you can't master a subspecialty where others practicing it for years. - If the case of the patient is complex and had many comorbidities with bad prognosis , they want you to take care of it and every specialty take their hands of apart from useless consultation like " nothing from our side " , while when case is straight forward and easy to treat they will fight you to take it . - when they stuck in a complex case they would tell you " Deal with it , you are the internist -with yellow smile -" despite it is even more difficult to you , while when it is easy they become heroes infront of the patient family . - Salary of IM is less comparing to other specialty , life quality is terrible , and the worst of all , other subspecialty are rasict when it comes to comparation to you ,(they see you inferior to them just because you are IM, even patient don't trust you "the general doctor" when they can seek subspecialty ). Internal medicine is a lie other specialties use to get ride of dirty work and huge amount of study , logically there should be no Internal medicine in modern medicine , GPs and Family medicine Ds are enough ,My advice as a doctor who suffered from IM , just make your IM a way to subspecialty fellowship

Thank you SO much! I'm applying for match in a few months. I was between EM and IM. Loved EM but hated the hours all over the place (flipping back and forth between nights and days is brutal). @peterhovorka51534 жыл бұрын
I wanted to be an internal medicine doctor but the more I rotate the less I want to do it. It's because of the patients. I spent some time at general internal medicine ward and usually I saw old, very sick patients. E.g. - 70 y.o. Lady with strong obesity, BMI above 40, after 2 infarctions and 2 strokes, asthma, hypertension and diabetes. She comes with some exacerbation of her disease. So now what. What would you do? I saw doctors thinking and working so hard but what do you want to do with patient like this? Nothing. You can moderate her health condition but usually you will see her again in a few months. So that's why I've started thinking about other speciality. Internal medicine is great if we speak about theory. The processes in our body etc...are great. But being an internist means treating mainly old, sick patients with very bad outcome. So I started to think about other specialities with younger patiens like ob/gyn.

Your videos are the best ❤ Thank you for creating these. Is it common to work in Internal Medicine for a few years after residency and before pursuing a Fellowship?
@billbill43922 жыл бұрын
If anyone wants a realistic depiction of IM residency, just imagine a camera mounted in the corner of a work room videotaping residents in a stationary position on their computers for 10 hours a day. The other 3-4 hours are spend rounding/noon conference. That is a typical day on wards. It is a TON of charting, paperwork, documentation, orders, reentering orders, placing and answering phone calls. A lot of it is very tedious and you don't really get to DO much of anything. You have to be happy with sitting at a computer all day teasing through minutiae of a patient's chart and often being reminded that you missed something or didn't document correctly.
