Me and my guild leader, as well as an allied guild and it's leader, did the entire quest chain together with our guild. It was probably one of my favorite moments of Vanilla WoW because we as a huge group were working together towards a common goal and at the same time a small handful of us putting in the extra work for something special. The raid against Eranikus was so epic we had two full raid groups, ours and one of the opposing faction, working together in Ventrilo to take him down. We were also in a race with other top guilds on our server and were probably about a week ahead of the next guild in progress to open the gates so it was exciting. When we were finally ready to do it we all agreed that we would decide to wait until the weekend to open the gates, many of those in both guilds had IRL obligations such as school, family, work, etc and just opening them the moment we could would be pointless because we wouldn't even be able to start raiding that day. Well that week, on a Thursday... I was a teenager at the time, school, after school activities, and homework took priority over WoW so once I had come home and finished what little homework I had I logged in. The gates were open, the 10 hour window to ring the gong is over. I have a shitty mallet in my bags that does nothing. All this because my guild leader, who at the time was a 30 something unemployed neckbeard with no responsibilities living in his grandma's basement, was bored that morning. He went up, clicked the gong, got his title and mount, screwing over myself, and our allied GL. tl;dr - *OTHER PEOPLE ARE CANCER*

Our tier 3 guild leader scarab lord ebayed his account before the start of TBC and made something like €3000 which was insane back then. The guy who bought the account then sat in Orgrimmar a few times for the fame then never logged on again. Kinda sad really but we still have the memories and the fame of being the top guild on our server in that moment.

The questline itself is covered quite well here, but there is a difference between doing the questline and actually being the person who opens the gates on a server. The questline is grueling on its own but that is far from all that is going on. In pretty much all cases, there is a substantial amount of drama surrounding the decision of who ends up doing the questline and opening the gates. This was and still is the only legendary mount in the game, and people come out from every place you can think of to say why they should be the one to do it. Most of those people can't for various reasons (above all being in one of the server's top guilds), but that won't stop them from causing a stink when they realize that someone else will get it and they will not. The people who have a real chance at it are also very likely to be racing against each other, and "honor" and "gentlemen's agreements" have a way of getting broken when the prize is something like this. For those who go for this specifically to get attention and "be known", you will likely get more than you bargained for. Not all attention is good attention and the whispers about where you got that mount are frequent - especially in major cities. The novelty wears off fast, to the point that you may want to avoid crowded places entirely or to not use the mount you and your friends sunk so much effort into acquiring. All of this combines to be an experience that is often highly stressful and draining, yet still being one of the most memorable things you can ever do in WoW. There is a reason why many Scarab Lords did not play the game for much longer beyond from when they opened the gates and why so very few are still around today.

@@kuehnsteffen1504 In theory that allows for more than one person to get the mount. In practice however, the first person/guild to finish the scepter is unlikely to sit on it for too long. I know of cases where delays were agreed so that several people would be able to get it done on one server. I also know of cases where a person would just open the gates in the middle of the night to keep anyone else from doing it. The bit in my OP about how agreements might be made between guilds racing each other to finish it can be all too easily broken was referring to this.

I think in Vanilla I got up to Maws. I went back and finished the chain in TBC, got the scepter, got the epic item, and was fine with that. On Sargeras back in the day the Alliance got to the gong first and no Horde guilds got the mount. A Horde guild named Obsidian Spur kept the Alliance off the gong for a long time with some major PVP battles that night.

One thing to note, the quest can still be done for every reward but the mount (and potential title). If you want the recipe, any of the gear, or just want to experience the story, you can take your time doing it. Also getting the rep is significantly easier after the gate opens if your guild is doing AQ, essentially knocking out the hardest grinding part.

@daniel482363 this is 100% true, you could do the quest chain up through the pre-cataclysm launch patch. The recipe is Dirges kickin' chimaerok chops. They give the highest stam of any food and are in very high demand.

Yeah, I did that too. Didn't bother to get the scepter until TLK though. Back in Classic we really focused on a single player doing that quest line. It was time consuming enough for one dude. And we were in competition with the horde for who would finish it first (we were very rival with a horde guild for server number 1 PvE (and PvP) guild (we were both))

The best part of doing this entire questchain, in actual vanilla, was refusing to ever learn Dirge's Chimerok Chops Recipe and instead putting it on the auction house every 2 days for the next 5 years for some random exorbitant amount of gold just to flex on all the scrubs who would forever be unworthy of holding such an awesome item. Then spam every pet you own at the same time, lag out the poors in the direct vicinity, hop on a giant bug, and cackle maniacally as you ride away in a cloud of green smog. Sincerely, a forever scarred MT-GM-Nolife that spent several million gold and about $3k irl dollars paying people to farm and PVP 24-7 to ensure that my ego would be satisfied when the day came. It was the best exercise in insanity ever created by the likes of Blizzard, and likely any developer. I would never do it again, only because I don't have enough cocaine anymore. Cheers!

This video helped me become scarab lord. I never officially thanked you for the prep during vanilla classic. Thanks. My story: Started on Whitemane; Joined 2 guilds Epoch of Thought and No Dice. Had 2 different accounts. Made raffle tickets for the highest carapace farmers between them and random bonuses for people who just helped. (Ended up costing about 45,000 gold worth of materials. Stayed up 22 hours a day farming carapace fragments for roughly 10 days (Ended up farming over 22,000 fragments myself by double boxing with 2 mages both with tier 2 set bonus for larger blizzard). It wasn't a multibox mage thing I controlled both of them manually separately. I think I still have cognitive issues from that lack of sleep. Horde stayed on 1 Layer and Alliance on Another so it happened to pan out. More people wanted the mount in the top guilds on that server which was the highest pop server that existed at the time so they didn't finish the event on the first week like everyone thought, which I was banking on. (So a little luck there) I ended up giving the scarab lord benefit to my rogue since the bigger guild didn't think anyone was going to hardcore farm for the scarab lord mount they didn't give the bwl item to anyone wanting the mount (and my mage was in that guild) so I used the other guild where my rogue was in to get the item so I could go for the mount. The extra quests (after getting the fragments) I had to have the guild leader from my bigger guild help with mostly as he raid lead it. Afterwards was just waiting to for the gong to be able to be pressed and get my legendary mount. It was epic. I don't recommend it. But it does go for a good story.

But now that you know exactly what's at the end. Just stick to having fun, raiding and pvping instead of doing this.
