I once knew a great professor of surgery. He was a technical wizard, extremely knowledgeable and very highly regarded. He would take care of the pt. postop., of course, and then continue to consult but turn over all other care to internal medicine. He would say, "I am the pt.'s surgeon, not his internist. My job is to safely perform the most technically perfect operation possible." One should not attempt to be all things to all people. He was a very kind man and pts. loved him with good reason. Be that sort of surgeon.

Love being a General Surgeon. It is not for everyone though. Compared to other surgical specialties we are paid the least and work the longest hours overall. We take care of the sickest surgical patients overall. If like me you work in a trauma center and cover trauma as well, you have to be ready to care for patients who have no General surgery issues but Orthopedic or Neurosurgical issues. It is very rewarding though and I would not trade it for any other specialty.

I am a medical student and I want to say something about surgery. First thing - Surgery looks so ''sexy'', because you operate, because you do hand procedures but many people don't realize that this is just about 1/3 of all work you do....you also do normal hospital work - because someone must take of the patient before and after the surgery....and also you do ambulance care - if someone cuts his/her finger and comes to the hospital...to be honest these two works (ward and ambulance) are not very popular among surgeons and it is very good way for burnout. Second thing - Few months ago I spoke to OB/GYN at OR and he told me that he was deciding between surgery and ob/gyn. Then I asked him why he chose ob/gyn and he told me because surgery is ''no border speciality''. You have so many procedures, you have so many operations, so many techniques that you must know....so that's why he chose ob/gyn because it's more narrow Third thing - 2 weeks ago I had my ENT rotation and some of my schoolmate said that he wants to be a surgeon. The ENT doctor turned around and said - I don't recommend it to you. The reasons were these two above and the last one was interesting. He said that if you are a surgeon, the maturation time is very long. Even if you have board certification from surgery it does not mean that you can operate. Of coure - some easy things like appendix etc...you can. But more complicated things you can't do. So after your board certification you must operate, operate and operate and maybe after next 5-10 years you will gain enough self esteem to operate as first surgeon. Until that you will be still assistant. So that's why he chose ENT. In my opinion if you want to do some surgical procedures, I would choose some smaller surgical specialty like OB/GYN, ENT, Urology, Ophthalmology. These specialities aren't borderless and you can mature quickly.

Is general surgery a dying branch? I mean now most of them specialise in a particular area and doesn't that make a general surgeon somewhat unimportant as people tend to go to specialists? It would be much appreciated if u guys could share ur thoughts on the matter.
@katemichelle3 жыл бұрын
I’m just a med student, but I’m gonna go with no. Even if things continue to become more specialized, I think general surgery will always be a stepping stone to a ton of fellowship programs (as not all surgery specialties even have integrated programs) and general is necessary as well, they have plenty of cases and a general education before specializing is beneficial as well
@seamuscoyne8793 жыл бұрын
