Do I have to play classic if I want any chance of being good, I'm generally sitting around top of silver bottom of gold on modern controls but it seems like with modern they straight remove some of the characters kits. Like modern bison can't do the slide.

No, although it is helpful to learn classic even if it is for no other reason than stronger supers and access to the characters full movesets. Some characters are also much better on modern than others

You don't HAVE to, though it is a bit character dependent (does the benefit of one-button SA/specials outweigh the cost of losing part of your kit). I would still heavily encourage you to try to learn. It will help build certain skill sets that modern can get in the way of, and if you enjoy playing fighting games in general and want to branch out, you're really going to want to learn eventually anyways.
