4:00 I just thought I would put this out there for you. Lye is Sodium Hydroxide or Potassium Hydroxide. They are both considered lye. In Chemistry they would be written NaOH or KOH. Both Sodium Potassium and hydroxide ( which is made up of Oxygen and Hydrogen) are fairly natural substances. But, I guess everything is made up of some combination of base elements. Lye used to be make by using White wood ash. There are some videos on youtube if you can find them. But, simple lye used to be made with White wood ash and Rain water. Soap has always been made with lye and there is really no other way to make soap. Now a days it is kind of unreasonable to think people are going to collect their White wood ash from their fire and turn it into lye. Most people just buy what is on the store shelf.

I have a question about the clean-up. Where do you rinse the bucket that was used for the lye mixture? Can I rinse the bucket outdoors and pour the water into the soil; would it kill the grass? And also, where do you rinse the utensils? I just want to make sure that it won't clog my kitchen sink. Thank you so much for sharing. The way you demonstrated the process made me feel confident, finally, to make homemade soap =)

Thanks, I'm glad! I run everything through my dishwasher. Since the mixture is now technically soap, there isn't any need to worry about drains being clogged :)

Great video! That's a lot of work to put that together. Congrats on your little guy, he's so cute! I think a great video topic is storing soap, I have a hard time in an old house keeping it clean while curing. Like it attracts dirt. Where do you keep it? How do you set up the curing place and containers? Love the baby noises in the background, enjoy it they grow so fast!
@bumblebeeapothecary5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it! And thanks for the congrats! :) It sure does go fast, I'm enjoying every moment! That is a great video topic, thanks for the suggestion! I'll add it to my list. You're right, it can be tricky to keep them clean. I put mine in clean cardboard boxes and have them in the basement. If the area you're keeping them is dusty, you could put something breathable overtop of the boxes, like a clean, lightweight piece of cloth.

How do you clean up all your kitchen appliances after use? Do you wash them with normal dish soap and then reuse them for food or do you have tools dedicated for just making soap? Thanks!
@bumblebeeapothecary4 жыл бұрын
I have dedicated soap making supplies, but I do wash them up with regular dish soap afterwards. I usually am busy and let them sit a while, so there doesn't end up being fresh lye on them :) I have heard it is safe to wash soap making equipment in the dishwasher, and then use it for food prep. Hope that helps!

Does caustic soda only react with tallow at super high concentration? I tried cleaning tallow with it but ended up with similar amount of grease left over. It is very good for burnt oil. Probably make sure there are no painted surfaces near the work and no decorative metals, such as coated brass or zinc that could be mistaken for steel. Those will not feel pain unlike the naked feet and won't regrow.
@bumblebeeapothecary4 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting question! I haven't tried cleaning with it like that.

@@bumblebeeapothecary Thank you, Marissa. I've used the shampoo twice now and it doesn't seem to be bothering my scalp as far as I can tell, but my hair has come out oily both times. So, I'm thinking that I probably had too much oil to lye???maybe??? So, anyway, I've gone back to my other shampoo for the time being and thought perhaps I will just use it as a body soap. 😊💕 fyi, I also emailed you on you website page, so you can ignore that... :)

Hello Marissa, I'm your subscriber for a long time but never commented here. I have a question... Should I buy a mixer, pots and spoons only for making soap or can I use the ones I usually use in my kitchen? I'm afraid to work with lye and end up contaminating my food (I don't even know if this is possible, as I never worked with lye). Thank you. I'm really excited to try making my own soap.
@bumblebeeapothecary3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for subscribing and watching! I have separate equipment since I make a lot of soap, but I have heard that if you clean them well, you can use them for both :)

If you're worried about lye still being on anything, just wipe it down with a bit of vinegar. That will completely neutralize any leftover smears of lye, and make your pots and utensils perfectly safe.

Thank you so much! He's actually my third :) It looks like I forgot to add links to the different recipes in that blog post! I'm fixing that right now. Here is a good recipe to start with: bumblebeeapothecary.com/pure-tallow-soap-recipe-how-to-make-soap-from-scratch/ I have the biggest crockpot I could find... I think it is 10 quarts. I make triple batches of soap, so if you follow the recipe without increasing it, you can definitely use a smaller crockpot :) And if you follow the recipe, you have enough for one mold. But feel free to double or triple it if you want! Thank you so much for watching, and for your kind words! :)

Hi there, Thank you very much for the videos and the information that you are sharing with us I would like to ask you a question. Every time I am making a soap, after I mix the oils together and add the lye/water mixture and the essential oils, the time I poor it in the soap moulds it starts raising like boiling and some times it runs out of the soap mould. I used to mix the water and lye with the oils when they where both at 98c. After watching your videos I left the water and the lye mixture outside to cool down for ten minutes. I must admit I tried this today and it was better but is done it again no as much as the previous times. At what temperature the mixture of ley/water should be? cool? cold? warm? I thing the mistake I make is there as I do everything else as it should be. The oils are about 96c to 99c Could you please let me know. many thanks
@bumblebeeapothecary3 жыл бұрын
I'm happy to help! It sounds like some part of the recipe is too hot before mixing. I make sure that the oil portion and the lye water are both 100ºF (you can make the conversion to Celsius with an online calculator). That should help prevent this. Hope that helps!

Have you had to lye water splashed on you? I haven't yet, thank goodness but have had fresh soap splatter on me. I did not use vinegar to clean it off, I ran it under water for a good 3-5 minutes, wash, then I'm good. I use vinegar to wipe my surface for any type of splatter which has worked really well. I heard on the skin, it intensifies the burn so I'm not going to test it out. Congrats on your baby, super adorable! Thanks for the lovely shampoo bars. I make an all coconut oil shampoo bar 😊.
@bumblebeeapothecary5 жыл бұрын
You’re welcome! I have had a little splash on me, and it wasn’t serious. It just stings/itches a bit. I either dab some vinegar on or rinse with water, and it’s fine. That is interesting to know about the vinegar. I haven’t had that happen, but maybe if it was a larger amount it could intensify the burn. Thanks for the congratulations 😊
@makeit26494 жыл бұрын
@@bumblebeeapothecary Please be aware that it is a dangerous old wives' tale to use vinegar to neutralize lye or soap batter that gets on your skin. The MSDS for lye is very specific that one should use cold running water ONLY to wash off lye from skin. Vinegar's higher acidity causes a stronger exothermic (heat) reaction than water does. In other words, you will increase the burn by using vinegar! I also was misinformed about this when I first made soap, and got schooled by a bunch of professional soap makers when I mentioned putting ACV on a lye spatter. You will see the vinegar myth repeated all over the Internet, but if you check the safety warnings on your lye container, it will always specify to use water. :)
