I love how this movie encompasses childhood fantasies so well, I used to imagine stuff like this all the time when I was a kid when I’d get in trouble

That's probably what makes it so popular--the fact that it brings back nostalgic memories in adults of being kids and having a child's imagination. I know when I was a kid and I got threats to have my mouth washed out with soap, I feared that it would poison me as well. But it wasn't because of this film (I didn't see it until I was 16, though I now watch it on TV every year); it was simply because I knew even at an early age that soap wasn't made to go in the mouth. I wish parents would use something else that is bad-tasting but not potentially toxic, such as a spoonful of salt, strong vinegar, or good old-fashioned castor oil. Sure, you don't get the symbolic "cleansing of a dirty mouth," but at least you get the lesson across without potentially harming the child.
