----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

So Mr Soap & Clay has worked in the glass industry for 20 years, responsible for building giant structures with a bajillion tempered glass windows and awnings and stuff. And he has some thoughts about the recently revived glass container hate in the soaping world. 😂

I haven’t even watched but I gotta comment! I just learned about the “rule” about not mixing lye solution in glass. I mix mine in a Pyrex but now I’ve gotten a little paranoid since I learned about the glass etching thing. I’m curious about what you think.
@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay 3 жыл бұрын
So I think we are going to do a live soon and actively try to blow up a Pyrex. Here’s the thing: glass is made out of sand and soda ash, which is a weak base. Etching glass requires a strong acid, so the idea that lye can etch the glass falls flat based on what the glass industry already knows about the etching process. Tempered glass breaks when a hot spot (like, an extremely hot hot spot) is created. I mean, there are other reasons glass can break but it’s not because of the etching the soapers are claiming.

Way back in the middle ages, when I first started making soap, palm, coconut and olive was called the trinity of soapmaking. It was pretty much how everybody started out. Unless you couldn't find palm oil and then you would use shortening or lard instead. I think sometimes we forget that a soap recipe doesn't have to be complicated to be great. As for the pyrex, I mostly make goat's milk soaps with frozen goat's milk so my lye/milk mixture never sits in the container very long, so I doubt I would have a problem using it. I typically don't use it only because it is heavy and I have fibromyalgia and lifting really bothers me. I had a Tupperware pancake batter pitcher that I had never used, so I made that my lye pitcher and I am still using it 20+ years later. I never store lye water so I guess I never gave this particular issue that much thought. I also have a stainless steel pitcher that I sometimes use, but I generally just use my plastic Tupperware pitcher to mix my lye and goat's milk.

Put the kaolin clay in as the amounts you once shared that you use. Love how it makes my skin feel. Did a drop swirl in the mold. If you haven't, you might try cold brew coffee. I prefer it over traditionally brewed drip coffee or espresso. If you get it from a store be cautious as it's often sold and made as a concentrate. Don't explode your heart! My next recipe test is going to be something like 30% olive, 15% rice bran, 5% castor, 20% coconut, and 15% each cocoa butter and shea butter. I know the soap calc numbers should be taken with some salt but... this is a damn near "perfect" formulation so I'm looking forward to it... when I get off my lazy butt and buy some of the stuff. Lol

I am a brand new soap maker -- I have only made three batches of soap since starting this journey about 6 months ago. The first four months I just spent reading and watching videos...I wanted to make a soap that looked like coffee but smell like butterscotch. I have never worked with any colors except chlorella and sage powder so this will be my first time. I LOVE the look of this soap. I know you mentioned you used clay and mica, but did you also use titanium dioxide or was the coloring of the soap strictly done by clay and mica? I am looking to get your color results at least the top portion anyways.... I have kept my soaps super super simple lol I have never separated the batch to do colors or anything like this, so this looks intimidating LOL. This is a beautiful soap though, I just had to tell you :)

This might me a dumb question but when using palm oil what will happen to your batch if you don't stir the palm oil before using it? I have about 7lbs of palm oil and I don't use it because of this. Should I melt all 7lbs and stir it up really well? If I do this will this be sufficient to use in all my future batches without any problem even after it solidifies?

@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Sorry - I missed this question! So melting palm completely before measuring out is something that I would totally recommend. The stearic acid and other heavier bits in the oil separates when solidified, so what you’ll end up with is essentially a whole lot of bar hardening stuff at the bottom of that jug if you melt it just enough to pour out what you need. Every time you use it, you should remelt completely whatever’s left in that jug. It’s the only oil I would say needs to be fully melted before using, just to make sure that the stearic acid is properly incorporated in the oils.

When I made the batch the lye didn't get hot? Had difficulty getting the Oil melting fast enough to be the same Temp as the lye was rapidly cooling. It was a great big All Day mess. @@MrsSoapAndClay does the kaolin clay really help in making the scent stick? I currently add it to my fragrance oil before I put it in my main batter. @carriemcnabb8814
@carriemcnabb8814 3 жыл бұрын
@@jadegirl5150 i believe the idea behind mixing the clay with the fragrance oil i because clay is absorbing and will soak it up. i do it both ways. most of the time i throw the clay in my main oils and blend well before adding lye. that helps me to get a feel of the batter thickness (i love a clay heavy soap). also makes it easier to work with fragrance oils when i add separately to a divided color batch . i haven't really noticed a difference one way or the other in scent retention.

What is the chemistry explanation for the lather that is increasing once the soap is older?
@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay Жыл бұрын
Well, it’s mostly the water loss that occurs as the bars sit. What’s left behind is the sugars and the saponified fatty acids. The bulk of the “crystalline structure” that some soapers mention occurs in the first 48 hours, as we can see when making a melt and pour base from scratch.

She did. What you can claim about your soap: it cleans. Because that's what soap does. What you cannot say about soap: it helps eczema. This is a drug claim. You need it evaluated by someone and that's expensive. What you cannot say about soap: it conditions your skin. This is a drug or cosmetic claim. You need it evaluated by someone. That's expensive. You *may* be able say "my friend who has eczema uses [insert product here] and they love it; they seem to have no flare ups following washing with it." This doesn't claim to treat the eczema nor does it definitively say it won't cause an issue. You're still on shaky ground because if your eczema prone customer DOES get a flare up, you have opened a possible doorway for a lawsuit, particularly if they have a good attorney. Soap is for to clean you. Nothing more. You can put on the label that it contains [X ingredients] and let customers make their own assumptions about what that means for them. But all you say is soap cleans. Cause that's what soap does.

Nope. That is not the recipe. Keep going. No palm oil at all.

What’s not the recipe? This one probably has palm, as most of mine do. So that WOULD be the recipe. 😂
