I’m feeling ya on all these new regs. Monterey Bay was cut back to 4 Vermillion and last year with the closure of salmon the halibut limits were cut back to two per-day from 3. The Biologists say that with salmon closed it will put too much pressure on halibut. Our biggest problem as fishermen is all these young Biologists trying to make a name for themselves. The grant monies come from the government. They all get voted in to office. As a group of fishermen we need to be very wise when voting these people in to power. I live Texas and the governments don't care about us, our bag limits have also been cut from a daily 16 to 10 and there's allot more, but commercial is still the same, so you guys aren't alone in government corruption.

Kudos on the info. Herding fisherman seems to be more difficult than herding cats. Lots of folks spending a lot of resources to enjoy our waters and yet we can't seem to find a unifying voice even with something as simple as MLPAs or recreational limits. Or it's just that money does talk at the end of the day...

Thanks Jeff as always. Just a FYI, the changes are still pending Office of Administrative Law review. So unless the new changes take effect before 4/1, we will have 10 days from when the new rules are posted for it to be in effect. So unless the Office of Adminstrative works over the weekend, there might be a small window to fill your freezers.

Personally, not really into rock fishing, it’s more of a harvest than actual fishing for me. There’s a lot of people into it that is does affect. They never give back… ever

I agree with you that it's more harvesting than fishing. But using a SPJ can be fun.

I caught a couple salmon off Port Hueneme decades ago, crazy how things have changed. Fishermen need to do more, particularly commercial, to keep it all sustainable. All take and no give back, some even feel entitled like the bottom draggers. Miners fill in and replant, loggers re-plant trees, ranchers rotate grazing, what to do commercial fishermen do? If we were better from the beginning we would never have needed MPAs.

I wonder why Fish and Game do not place a size limit ( length) for yellowtail and striper in Southern California . The number of yellowtail caught in channel Island is almost zero since 5 years ago.

They are a fast growing fish like a dorado with a short life span. IMO their population is strongly affected by bait at the islands (squid) and the over abundance of a seal population now.

The original print article said it wasn't, the electronic article cut out that section out lol. Commercial Vermillion catch was up 15% last year. Still don't see the need for a 50% reduction tho....

As we all know when it comes to government, Science means Money. Doesn't matter what the science says it is how much money you give to certain government officials/Politicians. Look at Panera. Just donate to the right criminal and you get a pass.

The more water they prohibit and the more fish they deny us to keep the more money they should take off our fishing license. Artificial reefs and sinking ships to build reefs need to be the standard. Slot limits on ling cod and other species of fish will help promote huge breeders. California is behind on conservation. We definitely do not lead in fish conservation.

Ridiculous waste in some commercial fishing! They need to do more sustainable fishing! God bless the sustainable ones. We shouldn't be punished for certain bad actors!

It's the Democrat to make really stiff. Fishing game penalties while allowing anybody, including illegal aliens, to steal $950 all day long everyday. But you get caught with one undersized fish and see what happens all Democrat policies.
