In AM broadcasting, no pre-emphasis is used. Pre-emphasis is a technique used to boost high-frequency audio signals before transmission, and it's typically used in FM broadcasting. In FM broadcasting, a pre-emphasis of 50 μs or 75 μs is commonly used, depending on the region and broadcasting standards. This helps to improve the signal-to-noise ratio and audio quality. However, AM broadcasting doesn't use pre-emphasis due to its different transmission characteristics and limited audio bandwidth.

Interesting looking transmitting dishes behind - would you mind me asking what service(s) they're for (commercial carrier or broadcaster)?

C Band and Ku Band. More on those in the future. But basically broadcast radio.

Would love to hear your opinions on the sound quality of digital radio vs fm. Digital has its benefits but will it ever be a successor to fm in the industry? Our national broadcaster trialed it here in Ireland but it wasn't as popular and sadly they switched it off :(

Short answer: digital radio has some sound advantages, but when you start getting greedy and shoving 8 channels in there, it suffers pretty badly.

HD Channel 1 sound is good. HD2 HD3 and HD4 sounds over compressed like a 32 Bit MP3.

@jamesmatheson4746 Close. There’s generally about 96 kbps available for FM HD. The primary channel gets the most, everything else gets carved up. Sometimes it really is 32 or 16 kbps. It’s AAC.

Why have AM radio stations Removed their HD radio signals ?
@TheBroadcastEngineer

It’s not worth the extra power needed. The cost be if it can be very expensive to build and run.

@@TheBroadcastEngineer But 10 am stations in Tucson Had HD. Then they quit. This kind of thinking may kill AM.

@@jamesmatheson4746 The cost to benefit ratio for AM HD is not good. You’re using a whole lot more electricity for little to no gain. You don’t really gain anything with AM HD. You can’t do sub channels or supplemental data services. THe bandwidth isn’t there. Unless the AM station goes FULL HD and eliminates their analog carrier, there just isn’t enough bandwidth.

@@TheBroadcastEngineer Then why did they offer HD AM in my town on 10 am stations for years only to cancel it. I guess in backwards Tech Tucson AZ they probably rented the HD add on transmitters and then gave them back.

@@jamesmatheson4746 I can’t speak for the exact reasons for your market. But generally, they got into it because some manager got caught up in the sales hype thinking it was the magic bullet to make a ton of money. Instead of spending that money to actually have good local programming, they spent th money on super expensive HD equipment and neglected the programming. Years down the line someone finally came in and took a look at the books and realized that they’re sinking a lot of money into electricity and maintenance of HD for no return on investment. But that’s my opinion…

It seems u.s radio is well behind Irish or fm radio, I don't think we even have am broadcasting here anymore, as for your radio automatically tuning/ retuning to the strongest signal, we have had that here for well over a decade Marcus, we would regard it as old at this stage, interesting video as always, try and get out of the Cold eh take care

Yeah, European countries are turning off AM. The strongest signal part has been a part of the standards for years. But it's not too popular in the US. At least not in Southern California...
