As I read the manga, I really felt like the second theme undermined the first a lot. She has a communication disorder, but it ends up not really mattering at all because she's so pretty. She never needs to confront her inability to speak or struggle to improve in any way, her anxiety ends up not mattering much

So it sounds like it doesn't stray too much from what I gathered in the first volume. It's wild that the message of the manga actually ends up being kind of toxic because it is low key expressing that all of your social hangups can be forgiven and you never really need to develop as a human being if you're hot enough. Not every story has to have some super deep or thought provoking message for the audience, but man :/

I recommend Watamote. The series is kinda like Komi but more realistic. In Watamote the main character goes through just about everything Komi does but the big difference is that shes not attractive to her peers so people just outright don't acknowledge her. They aren't even really mean to her they just don't give her the time of day at all and barely notice that she exists. So she has to go about her own way of trying to get social interaction and the ways that she fails feel so realistic its lowkey painful to watch

🙏🏿 thanks a ton And that's facts; if Komi was busted, she would be invisible and the manga would be a page long. I actually wish we could get a manga that stars a female protagonist that isn't traditionally attractive and dives into the realities of their day to day experience. That would be hella interesting

Not much to add but hard agree. Despite being pretty introverted myself, I bounced off of Komi-san pretty quickly and I think this is a big reason why. It seems like the characters exist primarily for either comedy or for fetish purposes rather than to create an interesting narrative.

@@aestheticswim3397 I get it 1000%. I'll give Komi some credit for having a bit more going on than I thought at first, but there's definitely some stuff out there That is 100% waifu pandering. I just try to remember that everybody comes to Anime and manga for their own reasons, and it's not for me to judge those reasons for others (even if I do think the shows are straight basura)

For real this is pissing me off, I really like the story, the characters, but it’s so unrealistic I can’t really enjoy it. Most people with social anxiety aren’t considered objectively beautiful and worshipped for their appearance like Komi is. It’s almost insulting tbh.

It’s not supposed to be realistic you know? It’s a comedy a COMDEY you know? Also I like the fact it’s not realistic because not everyone wants realistic things.
