Over consumption absolutely DESTROYS my creative process. I know that my creativity comes from the motivation I get from watching shows, listening to music, eating interesting foods, or even going for a walk. I consume these things in heavy moderation and appreciate them, and thus that feeds my creativity. I think binge watching shows back to back is one of the worst things to do to appreciate art. Even scrolling on social media fucks up my process and I just avoid it as much as possible. I get so much fatigue hearing about so many shows and stuff that just exist, but I want to exist too and don't want to be overwhelmed by everything. I just wanna make my art, I don't need to have side conversations about (insert new title here) or the other 50,000+ things going on. I don't care about trends, I just wanna appreciate the genres of shoujo/josei and slowly find new ones or read classics that I never got to. Slow consumption is just so much better for my mental.

There definitely is a media cycle. Albums and tv shows are discussed immediately after release, but the discussions usually a week or so later. We see this with shows like Velma. People claimed it “was the worst cartoon ever”, but the second it ended, people stopped talking about it. It seems people are rewarded for discussing current releases, so folks center their content on that media, but there are also shows like Avatar TLA that stand the test of time.

I used to feel ashamed that I keep rewatching the same 10 shows over and over again but honestly it’s healthier than overconsumption. Because every time I watch the same shows I notice more things and learn more lessons from them and just let the shows affect me in a more meaningful way.

This also applies to video game culture. There are so many people that'll go out and play a game (especially a live service game), that's super popular to play, but when the game loses its popularity, everyone is like "DEAD GAME DEAD GAME", even though you can easily run into active users, playing said game.

As a gay kid, I never fit in! First of all, I did dance and theatre when most boys my age did basketball, football or baseball and when all of my friends were watching Gossip Girl, Vampire Diaries, Teen Wolf, Secret Life of the American Teenager and Modern Family in middle school, I was watching magical girl anime! I always did my own thing!

Those early 2000s animes werent popular when they were getting released, so not much has changed. When I built my group of otaku friends in the early mid 2000s, i noticed we all had maybe one or two shows in common, and liked a variety of things. But because we could understand each other's tastes, it was fun to hang out together!

You’re absolutely right. I remember in high school, I wanted to fit in so badly that I started joining social media and making jokes/memes just to seem cool and interesting. But nowadays, I just don’t care to follow trends. If it’s something I have genuine interest in, I’ll partake but otherwise, I’m good. Do what makes YOU happy first and foremost. Trying to fit in and follow things you have zero passion for only leads to burnout and identity issues.

Man tv shows cycle in and out so fast it's hard to really take the time to enjoy stuff. When I was younger, I was watching everything to talk about them with other folks, but now with so much series out, I don't have much to talk with everyone, but I would rather enjoy what I like.

EXACTLY THIS!!! Just watch what you wanna watch so you’ll have fun while doing so, and at the end of the day everything has a community, no matter how small! I think overconsumption harms the anime scene in particular because anime feels overproduced as well, with there being too many shows each season for the average viewer to keep up with. It hurts the storytelling because they’re being forced into strict time constraints, and it hurts the people making them as well.

Okay 1.) This video helped a lot to watch honestly. I got into Chainsaw Man as the first part of the manga ended since I was interested and it seemed like a good time to hop on the trend, and read it at my own pace so I didn’t rush through it. Then the anime came out and I didn’t enjoy it and went through each episode just so I could be in the loop. It felt weird and wrong and like I wasn’t capitalizing on the right time to enjoy it? Which is such a terrible mindset! I’ve gotten this with anime a lot too, and I’m going through my anilist just deleting stuff that I feel like I have to watch or read just to stay in the loop. I also totally was expecting you to bring up The Last of Us because I feel like this really applies to it too!! Seeing pieces of art become trends to bandwagon on just feels wrong and I hope this slows down even though it seems to do the opposite, especially since the pandemic when there’s more of an expectation of using your free time to connect with others through media. 2.) Are you ever gonna draw Garfield fanart?

I feel like I'm doing the same thing with Spy x Family. I already read the manga and there's no reason for me to watch the anime. I originally watched it because my high school peers were watching it in a group chat event so I thought to watch it with them but now I'm like, why am I watching this? I only want to watch it to catch up with the Spy x Family discord but the animes pretty much the same as the manga and I don't really care about little details (although now that I remember, I still kind of want to in case I miss something that's different, but idk if that's fomo). Also, I liked Last of Us and I'm glad I watched it. Idk if I watched bc of the trends but that type of show is up my alley since it has a lot of action and drama and I love those type of shows! This is also happening with me and Shadow and Bone. Like it's so cringy and I really hate watching it but I'm starting to only watch shows because KZbinrs are watching and I don't want to get spoiled. I seem to gravitate towards popular things because I know the names and I never thought of that before.

Honestly I understand what it’s like trying to fit in as I tried to do that back in my 1st year of secondary school with the popular kids and honestly when I look back at it I genuinely cringe at myself for the way I behaved cause I was just that desperate to fit in and not be a loner and thankfully I stopped caring by the time I got to my 5th year cause I realised just how stupid it was and that I should just be myself and have friends who just like me for me. Edit: Also I ironically do like Chainsaw Man but I still respect those who don’t like it and there are some shows i feel pressured to watch as well since I see everyone talking about them *cough* The Owl House.

I avoided Owl House too when everyone was talking about it. It was much more comfortable and enjoyable watching it out of my own genuine curiosity, and not because others are breathing down my neck and saying its the best cartoon of all time. By the way, I also read Chainsaw Man before it got popular. I didn't like the story for the most part, but I was still able to appreciate some things like the manga's art style. I can't really vibe with the all these new fans its gotten though, since it feels they're only talking about it cuz its popular, not because they acknowledge the actual artistry behind it.

I really hate the culture of seasonal anime in the anime community. I used to watch a lot of those seasonal anime videos but then I just got sick of keeping up with new shows. the one trendy series I'm still into is the Chainsaw Man manga, and I don't think I really have a reason to watch the anime since it's the same story in a different medium.

I feel this a lot not just on what shows to watch, but on the pressure of watching it RIGHT NOW IMMEDIATELY or else you don't care about it... Like even if I am genuinely interested in something maybe I'm just not in the mood and I'm doing something else in my life. I understand stuff like wanting it to succeed so that there'll be a second season/doesn't get immediately cancelled by execs/show that certain stuff is cool and should be produced more but man I just barely can keep up with watching decades old shows I'm watching! Like, I watched the first episode of Tuca and Bertie when it was still new and I felt "this looks like a good show, but I think I'll appreciate it more when I'm in my 30s instead of 21" so I didn't keep watching it, but I do feel like I "failed" it by not watching it all when it was new, despite knowing that netflixecs will cancel everything that doesnt make stranger things profits in one week. I don't really care that much about fitting in with whats trending at the minute, if something appeals to me I'll probably get to it sooner or later, but the pressure of watching/reading/playing it the second it comes out or else you don't care about it does curb my motivation a little, can't lie.

I contemplated getting Jennette McCurdy's book this morning, but ultimately decided it hit a lil too close to home for now. I made drawings for the vendors I visited at the most recent con and legit one almost cried because people hadn't been that nice to him and I was the only one who recognized his favorite anime. Funny about Chainsaw Man and reading comprehension because one of the running jokes in the fandom is that the fans don't know how to understand themes. I say regularly I don't watch anime as a genre; I don't think dozens of shows every few months is unreasonable to manage. Makes sense why there's that many awful takes coming from that community. Btw, will you do me a solid and make Garfield fanart???

Are you ever gonna draw Garfield fanart? 🐈 I 100% agree on social media trends fueling our media consumption. I wish it is more normalized to slowly consume and analyze media (television, film, music, literature, etc.). This is why I am usually turned off from trying new, popular shows and films. I don't want to waste my time trying get into the hype of something only for me to find out that I don't like or even hate it. If I ever talk about something that is currently popular, I would most likely not talk about it until the hype dies down (books are sort of an exception for me lol). Nonetheless, great video as always Captain!!

Oouuugh there is a massive problem with the anime community on this just like you mentioned. While I DO currently enjoy chainsaw man and also demon slayer, I got into them because there were things about them that did specifically interest me, not because theyre popular. There are so many popular anime that I cant STAND so its a rare moment I do end up getting into the big ones. There is a lot of pressure and its awful. The ones I do remember and think about and continue to interact with in online spaces are not all that popular but their stories have had such an impact on me. As a JoJo's Bizzare Adventure fan i'm used to hearing people trash it because they think its too "flamboyant" but when Part 5 was coming out it was trendy to watch it and a lot of people were only watching that Part and then ignoring the rest. Its one thing to get started out of place and then go back to watch the previous Parts but its another to just skip to what's trendy just because its trendy, and then call it mid because you don't even understand some of the lore. Another example, I had a small crush on my team lead at work and just wanted an excuse to talk to him so I'd watch the same animes he was watching so we could talk about the episodes. I'm not even a fan of My Hero Acadamia and i just decided I was gonna drop it after s3 but because he was watching s4, i too started watching s4😓. Same with Demon Slayer, its really good but I didn't feel as hype as everyone else was about it, I feel like I watched it because everyone else was.

I started watching Part 5 for the exact reason you mentioned, I just didn’t have much interest in JoJo in general beforehand but all of my internet friends loved it. I went back and watched some of the older parts and I’m glad I did because I love 1 and 2, and I’ve struggled with just not finishing 3 because I’ve seen so many people just sing its praises and I feel out of the loop without completing the series even though I don’t feel connected to it anymore! JoJo really is a double edged sword imo Edit: Just to add, I’m trying to fight the urge to catch up on Demon Slayer and AOT because I’m not that into them but they’re trendy, especially the end of AOT :/ it’s so strong in the anime community

I like Chainsaw Man because, like Fullmetal Alchemist, it is atypical to most shonen manga and anime I am not into. Although I guess Chainsaw Man is much weirder than Fullmetal Alchemist. For me, I did not care much for The Expanse. It was just boring. I think being raised on PBS, I find a lot of sci-fi uninteresting or find myself baffled at the kind of story being told. Though again, Fullmetal Alchemist is kind of sci-fi, but the story and themes are understandable and all too human. The Expanse, however, felt a bit sterile. The moment a Belter crashed into the Ring, I rolled my eyes and quit then and there.
