My personal unpopular opinion is that anime should stop with the weird fetishistic depiction of girls with a young mind. I don't know there's a term for those kind of girls, but just seeing fans (males) just coo and praise a girl who is shy with cute mannerisms and incompetent with a lot of things just give me weird vibes, ESPECIALLY if the female is underage. Sorry if I worded it weirdly, but this especially irks me. Great video Captain!

It's called moe. I don't mind it when it's done right(like if they're an actual little girl), and the character still has agency, but when they're just there to be sexualized and infantilized for their docility then it's a problem.

Satoshi Kon maybe one of my favourite auteurs of anime but he definitely still took part in tropes that diminish the quality overtime. My favourite film of his Millenium Actress literally being about a young beautiful actress chasing after a man with hardly any character and sacrificing so much of her emotional energy to a faceless man like that is one of the weaker aspects of the film. I think alot of creatives in the animation industry, both anime and cartoons still fall short in recreating such base tropes as ugliness and darkness/the color black overall being subtextually linked to evil/immorality is something that still needs to be tackled alot more

My anime unpopular opinion is that the manga group CLAMP has a lesbophobia issue. They never let their lesbian relationships have a happy ending, they always kill them off and make them die horribly, and if they're not in a relationship then they'll have an unrequited crush on a girl who has a boyfriend(think Tomoyo/Sakura in Cardcaptor Sakura). It's very jarring and telling in that they always let their gay and bi male characters be happy in relationships with other men, but the lesbians ahve to be miserable, have unrequited love, or if they're in a relationship then they die, if not kill each other/themselves. I sincerely think CLAMP hates lesbians and that's what stops me from getting more into them than I normally would. Also, anime has a transmisogyny issue. What with the whole "tr*p/f*ta" thing and man in dress jokes, it's very uncomfortable to see because these archetypes and tropes put real life trans women in danger as they're seen as "deceiving" men, not to mention the fetishism.
@sihchenliang7260

Not mention that people sometimes forget Tomoyo is actually biological cousin to Sakura. This two don't even know they're actually relatives in the story. CLAMP always got some iconic ships with questionable tropes
@imthebossmermaid3648
@imthebossmermaid3648 Жыл бұрын
@@sihchenliang7260 It's true. They're specifically second cousins, which means their mothers were cousins, which means their grandparents were siblings. But that doesn't make it okay because CLAMP is willing to allow incestuous and age-gap and even pedophilic ships to pass but they're not able to make lesbians be happy? Make it make sense, please.
@SecretIdentityStudio
@SecretIdentityStudio Жыл бұрын
The thing with cousins is it's legal and normalized there and in some other countries, so it's not considered incest; however, CLAMP *does* have a lot of questionable relationships in their stories that *are* treated as taboo and "this is wrong in real life, but it's a story so it's fine." (I do get sick of all the age gaps, but hey...)

I know I'm going to have a bit more of a combative opinion since I am not black and don't experience the fear, but I'd say that by not having as many black characters, we are kind of letting the racists win. They don't want black people or even dark-skinned characters in their media. If Gamefreak buckle down and decide to not have black characters anymore, it would be a major step back for representation. I tend to think of Thumin, a black artist who received a lot of hate for drawing herself as non-black characters (Sailor Moon and Kiki) to the point where people made racist edits to her art and spammed her on social media with slurs and harassment. What she went through was horrendous and never should have happened, but the fact that she stayed strong, was vocal about her harassment and continues to draw black characters and advocate for black representation allowed for many people to see just how bad black artists have it and support her. She didn't buckle down, she kept fighting and now she's doing better than ever. Hell, even though I'm white I've had to deal with harassment for drawing non-white characters. People commenting that it's a problem my character is black or saying racist things about my Squid Game fanart. We can't just allow those who discriminate against us to win and expect change. And besides, I don't think most Pokemon fans are racist, it's just a huge fandom so the vocal minority seems more intense than it actually is. That doesn't make it okay but we can still combat it.

As someone who loves Misa, people can love her and want more for her character but it's okay to acknowledge that she's not well-written, okay? As much as I will always see Misa as the fierce badass she is, it's obvious that the writers did not deliberately write her that way; she was still a product of misogyny. She was only dropped in the story to be Light's submissive pick-me and wish fulfillment of a sexy docile woman that you can mistreat. There's no reason for a competent and calculating woman such as Misa to stick around her for so long, but they kept her there to make Light look better and to prove that men are superior to women. Also, she will always be a comphet lesbian to me! And I would love a series about Nessa, I watched an episode about her and I loved it, it was so sweet! She's so pretty and smart and fierce and has an adorable personality. I don't even like Pokemon but I would sit down for a series about Nessa. We need more animes starring Black girls, besides just Michiko and Hatchin which makes me uncomfortable because of how hypersexualized and loud Michiko(who is Afro-Latina) is, and how she's voiced by a white woman with a blaccent on top of that. I'm tired of Everyman and Interesting Waifu stories too. And I don't like Komi Can't Communicate because I heard that it's very queerphobic; Najimi's gender identity is treated as a joke and one of the characters is psycho yandere lesbian. I'm so tired of it.

Although I felt the 2017 live-action Death Note movie was mediocre, I did see what the writers wanted to change and improve with Misa (renamed Mia) in this version. The way these changes were executed felt very sloppy, but at the same time it did point to some potential alternatives for a re-telling with her character compared to how the original anime just had her be mistreated and abused by Light.

Death Note the Musical actually made Misa seem more realistic, despite being a significantly shorter piece and also being a musical of all things. The Japanese live action films possibly treated her worse, but also gave her a lot of complexities and explored the kinds of issues that would make a woman as strong as her feel the need to stick by Light. I love her, but for fans like us we do kind of have to piece things together since the writers did not intend for her to be much at all. For her to make sense in the role she's forced into in the manga and anime, she has to be a severely troubled person, which is what I assumed when I first watched and read it, and I couldn't get enough of how interesting she seemed because of that, but then I read some of the author's other work and realized he was just a misogynist and he really likes writing his attractive female characters as overwhelmingly submissive and adoring towards the protagonist, even without any chemistry or build up to explain the devotion. It doesn't sit right with me, that's why I prefer my version of Misa, and the ones that other people come up with.

My unpopular opinion on anime, especially when it comes to the anime community is that I think some within the community seem to only care about the newest & mainstream anime. Which is not to say that modern anime is "bad" or "awful", but a good half portion of my favorite anime shows tends to vary greatly in either genre or decade or ones that aren't super big popular. I think it's due to anime becoming more normalized as a medium to watch in the last years. Newcomers might think that anime has only become good recently. And the case that many anime-watchers are mostly or only into mainstream anime is not new, that's why it's called mainstream.

I know they aren't all the same and some of them are probably good, but the premise is such blatent wish fufillment that I cannot care. 2. I'd be down with more shows about the human pokemon characters, but my first pick(s) would be Melony and Gordie. I wanna see how their relationship got strained and if they can be on good terms. Also the artbook showed us Melony has more kids so do something with them too. 3. I don't see why Spirited Away is a masterpiece. I definitely liked it, but I only see it as a solid 8/10 movie, not a 10/10 movie you have to see before you die. 4. I think A Lull in the Sea is a tad underrated. It has flaws for sure, but there's more to like about it than the animation and soundtrack, though the 1st 3 episodes are kinda rough and the last one straight-up sucks(also it's technically not an anime but I have very similar feelings about Bee & Puppycat Lazy in Space).

Also the girls have no identity beyond wanting to please their boyfriends, some are overly sexualized, and the main characters(who want to be shonen mangakas) literally say that they refuse to ask girls they know to help them write their female characters, because it's a shonen aimed at boys, so they should just be a boy's ideal of what a girl acts like. *vomit vomit vomit sounds*

I tried to watch Panty and Stocking and personally it felt like a Japaneae guy watched one episode of South Park, didn't get any of the satirical commentary and just thought the appeal was about the sex jokes, the humor is so lowbrow and the characters are incredibly one note, I genuinely can't say anything about Panty other than the fact she likes to fuck, compare her to Chef or Kenny (by the time PSG came out he was already a fleshed out character and not just a punchline) who are both characters with a high libido but they're not defined by it, I also admit it's been 7 years since I watched that show and my opinions might be different now, but at the time I just didn't get the appeal. When it comes to Ojamajo Doremi, I'm sure it didn't manage to achieve a certain level of popularity because the English anime market has always been heavily male oriented, other than Sailor Moon and maybe Sakura (which the American version had to cater to boys) what kind of girly anime managed to be popular in the US?Toonami only showcased shonen and shojo was often straight to dvd

The Powerpuff Girls Z is also different because Buttercup is pretty much the only girl in a family full of males and is pretty much a tomboy like she was in the cartoon, Blossom is so different in the anime than she was in the cartoon because she has a younger sister and she's just your typical boy-crazy(she likes Buttercup's older brother) and has an annoying younger sister. Oh, and Blossom also likes food. Bubbles is pretty much Blossom from the cartoon but in the anime and she is an only child being raised by her strict grandma.

And they kill her off in episode 1 like she was nothing. 2.) they changed Hei from a cool character into a weird abusive alcoholic. 3.) I do not; and still don’t care about July and the main red head girl. I still want them to do a MI6! Spin off with April and a November and maybe August and the others.

Don’t know if it’s actually an unpopular opinion, but I hate how so few male anime makers can make good female characters.
@imthebossmermaid3648
@imthebossmermaid3648 Жыл бұрын
My Hero Academia is not the revolutionary feminist shonen anime that many people like to think it is. I'm so sick of people saying it's "better" than other shonen because it treats its female characters well and is totally feminist when no, it is not. Its female characters are still shafted heavily, sexualized a ton, including the high school girls, there's a typical "lecherous pervert" character who, while not getting away with his antics and is indeed condemned for them, still faces no serious repurcussions and is treated as little more than an inoffensive joke, there are far less female characters in general and most of their costumes(especially the pro-heroes) are incredibly sexualized and most of them have powers that conveniently force them to show skin. Hagakure literally runs around butt-naked for fetish appeal because she was originally a boy but Horikoshi made her a girl for this reason. Nejire gets sidelined in the big three while the two male members get deep arcs, meanwhile she gets a beauty pageant. A beauty pageant? Are you fucking kidding me? And then there's Mirko, the first Black female character to be introduced who is portrayed as incredibly loud, violent, and aggressive and constantly loving to fight. Puella Magi Madoka Magica is(also) not a feminist masterpiece, it's literally an anime made by and for men that tears down the female empowerment of the Magical Girl genre(a genre aimed at women and girls), and its entire focus is on how this cool form of wish fulfillment that the shows for girls embrace is actually a bad thing that will corrupt you eventually, there is no hope to be found, anything you wish for or want is selfish and you will be punished for it horribly, because girls are too hysterical and selfish and naive to handle power and will just break down and eventually destroy the universe. And even when Madoka fixes it being a Magical Girl is still guaranteed suicide, and she just gets erased from existence basically, and then Rebellion comes along and makes it even worse. It just destroys the core elements of the genre for the sake of grimdark edginess aimed at men, and to see male fans praise it as better, a "deconstruction" and more complex and deep than the Magical Girl works aimed at girls that are actually empowering, or say that anyone who critiques it is just stupid or doesn't understand, is sickening, because the whole point of Magical Girl isn't that it's a bad thing that will lead to your doom, isn't telling girls that they are fragile over-emotional beings incapable of handling real power. The whole point of it is to tell girls that they can be powerful and achieve great things, that you can be strong and feminine, that you can change the world and nothing and nobody is going to keep you down. It gives girls a female power fantasy that they can see themselves in. The Magical Girl genre can still be dark or deconstructive(not that Madoka is deconstructive fufufufufu) but there are better ways to go about it than just turning it into(and I know Madoka fans hate this word but I do not care) torture porn for adult male audiences, wherein teenage girls are preyed upon for their emotions and dreams and desires, which are then used against them for the betterment of everyone else. You can like Madoka but don't pretend it's more feminist than Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, or Precure, and try to tear shows of that like down. Even Princess Tutu was a better example of a dark Magical Girl series that wasn't about how female empowerment needs to be destroyed, and it was aimed at boys.

You had me until Madoka Feminism in writing isn’t based on whether or not the girl characters end up happy or not. Lots of the most memorable characters, regardless of gender identity, in anime don’t get that happy ending. Or if they do they most likely went through tremendous amounts of grief and trauma Magical girl cartoons have always been this dark. Maybe in recent years it died down, but ultimately this has been a constant factor. Madoka had its own thing for sure, but it’s also not that far off. New Madoka characters I don’t care for, especially their designs, but thats not what you focused on here which is a bit surprising But no, the story isn’t about portraying girls as dumb and selfish for a wish. If they do make a decision that seems “irrational” that would be because they are literal children, which is the tragedy here. Feminism in writing is about giving the female characters just as complex moral topics, and themes as male characters seem to only get. Also spoilers but like…..the girls quite literally learn to handle that all mighty power. It’s devastating and tragic, but usually that’s kinda the point when any character, again regardless of gender identity, becomes a god. Like there are going to be consequences I'm not saying that Madoka got the best writing or anything, it definitely got its issues, and I wouldn't call it a feminist thing, but like that's not where the attention should be

@@afrolens9532 Hi, the difference is that Sailor Moon was written by women for women with the intention of empowering them and giving them superheroes to relate to. Madoka Magica was written by men, for men, and Gen has said that the story is about punishing girls for their hubris, compared them to Al Qaeda, and other stuff like that. Also how is it empowering example of Magical Girl work when the story was literally based off of an eroge(aka porn) game and the creators didn't even have enough respect for the genre to watch any magical girl shows and take any inspiration from them... And I never said that all girls have to be happy for a work to be feminist. You're doing the exact same thing that I said I'm sick of Madoka fans doing, which is pretending that if you hate Madoka Magica and its themes then you must want all other Magical Girl shows to just be light fluffy sop as if only shows like Madoka are dark and "deep". And yes, Magical Girl has always been dark, but the difference is that the girls in Sailor Moon and other such shows aren't suffering because of a punishment for their power or for making a wish. The suffering isn't a consequence of them being empowered and it isn't "see, this is why you shouldn't have become a Magical Girl!" They suffer because they are heroes and the story always shows them rising above their challenges. Magical Girl has always been a female power fantasy, and while the heroines will suffer because of the hardships that come with being a superhero it is NEVER as a form of condemnation for that fantasy, unlike in Madoka Magica, where all their suffering is literally because they are girls who happened to make wishes for themselves and people they care about, which backfired of course, because girls shouldn't make wishes at all. And while the tragedy is that they are children, Madoka Magica literally asserts only that teenage girls are contracted because they are the most hysterical and over-emotional(I hope I don't have to explain why this reasoning is inherently sexist and stereotypical in a world that loves to belittle teenage girls and their concerns as just them being "emotional" or "drama queens); if it were just the fact that they are children then we would see Magical Boys as well, but the fact that they're all girls shows that the writers have a negative view of women and girls who wield power or desire things for themselves, that they won't be emotionally stable or rational enough to handle it and will explode and succumb to despair. The entire worldbuilding and storyline is based on this "fact". Magical Girl isn't supposed to be about how being a Magical Girl is a "tragedy", it's supposed to be about female empowerment, not an oppressive cage. But in this show being a Magical Girl is innately a bad thing, something that tortures these young girls because they are easy bait and prone to hysteria and eventually their power will backfire and turn out to be a bad thing after all. And while the girls do learn to control their powers, this still doesn't change the story's assertion that being a Magical Girl isn't something that a girl should aspire to be at all. Something created by a woman as a female power fantasy is actually a harmful thing that will lead to your downfall because your emotions will overtake you. The entire reason they're in this situation is because they dared to be strong, dared to be bold, dared to have dreams and desires and want something out of their lives, no matter how small, and it's ultimately squandered and crushed. Oh, and finally, you can't divorce this from gender and say "characters will suffer regardless of their identity" like I'm sorry but no ma'am. If someone was complaining about the "bury your gays" trope, would you say that characters in fiction often lose their loved ones or are star-crossed lovers regardless of their sexual orientation so it's not homophobic? Or that the "disposable woman" trope isn't sexist because characters die regardless of their gender in fiction? I have never, *never* implied that "bad things happen to girls, therefore sexist". But you cannot deny that the Magical Girl genre is a genre made to empower women and especially young girls and show them that they can be powerful despite the odds, and that Madoka Magica goes against that by making a heroic archetype designed to inspire women as something that instead oppresses them and breaks them down, making it so that they never should have wanted to be Magical Girls or aspire above their station in the first place. There are far better ways to write a Magical Girl tragedy without making it so that the female empowerment that Magical Girl represents is inherently something to be shunned.
@ashleycreps9282
@ashleycreps9282 Жыл бұрын
*Spoiler warning* didn't Madoka end with the implication that humanity only progressed from hunter gatherer society because of a wish a young girl made? And also that most of history's greatest women had also made similar wishes? Also, Madoka's mom being a working mother (unusual in anime) who talks to her about being able to face her challenges before Madoka goes to fight Walpurgisnacht? The reason you are getting pushback on your take is because it feels like you are taking the least charitable interpretation of the show, basically saying "Urobuchi is a sexist trying to assassinate a genre for female empowerment!" Nevermind that men have been writing magical girl stories for men since Cutie Honey. Not that I think it's a particularly feminist work either (the line about teenage girl sadness being extra powerful against entropy was stupid), but I wouldn't say it's straight-up anti-feminist. Otherwise, why would it even touch on her mother's struggle in the workforce? Even with the comparison to Al-Queda, Urobuchi was trying to make the point that saying one fights for 'truth, justice, and love' doesn't make it so... Which is a theme that often gets demonstrated in shounen shows (such as, for a relevant example, Death Note). Maybe I'm missing all the hot takes that say "Madoka is objectively better than Sailor Moon, and here's 5 reasons why," because all I see is people liking a show because it's a story well-told. A story that I think actually does make an effort, even if ultimately misguided.

@@imthebossmermaid3648 Sailor Moon has a 14 yr old in a miniskirt that gotta date a 17-18 yr old, and watches her friends die multiple times because of the decisions she makes, due to the decisions her past life made. If we are talking about the anime too, given some were made by men, she is constantly mocked for crying in appropriate situations when she is a child. I love her, but it’s not perfect and it doesn’t seem to fit your idea of feminism Like I said there’s a lot to criticize with Madoka, but “girl grief” ain’t the focus. And you don’t need to bring up homophobia and tropes to make a point that has nothing to do with it. The disposable girl is a bad trope but we have context as to why that is given whichever media it’s under. Like why does a show saying, “being a magical girl in this context is bad” anti feminist? There are superhero stories where becoming a being that holds tremendous responsibility and power isn’t ideal, especially if you’re a kid. That’s a common trope people explore. I don’t think people were saying you shouldn’t be a hero, just that the responsibility and holding power can have consequences people don’t think of Yeah someone goes after teenage girls because they are over emotional. The antagonist says this. An antagonist that can’t even comprehend humane emotions. Only to develop a sense of fear because the girls managed to gain control and overpower it Also, I’m a casual fan at best for both Madoka and Sailor Moon series. And there is a clear distinction between magical girl animes written by women vs men. But Madoka isn’t the first magical girl medium to question if girls striving to be superheroes is a good thing. Again, Sailor Moon does this too because who lets kids do this? And then when the kids be kids and suffer through those consequences and “punished”(at least that’s how they frame it) it sucks to see but also that is expected. They are children. It’s not a feminist story, but I don’t see a lot of anime feminist anyways

Same on PPG Z. Even tho i think the designs are cute too, but the writing in the 1st ep felt too... much. Never went back after that ep. Still need to see Gangsta. Goldenboy is still stuck in my head just for the main character repeatedly going " Study study study" when he gets in his groove at work. I get what you're saying tho, definitely not asmuch fan art made of Goldenboy in comparison to P&S. Never got into Darker than Black cuz of being spoilt on a certain character who was screwed over in the 2nd season. Nagatoro is a product of a hentai artist, and it's obvious. I still keep up with the manga just out of certain scenes where Naga was clearly shitting on some incel tendencies that naoto was giving off early on. But spoilers, the fanservice isn't gonna stop, and yes i'm tired of it too. I stick with it just cuz even tho I shit on him, I also related to senpai as an art student in my teens. Nessa deserves the world, and so much better than the racist fandom that we're stuck with. Also wish Bea didn't look so light in her episode of twilight wings, she seemed clearly brown in the game compared to that, hell even the regular Sword Shield anime she looked closer to the game than how twilight wings lightened her. You didn't bring it up but Akiba Maid War is an anime that really shows how fanservice doesn't have to be a factor at all to create an good show, and it is ICONIC! Even tho most of the main cast are in typical cutesy maid outfits, the animators went Out of their way to NOT do the usual fanservice that shows like Nagatoro and Dressup Darling pulls regularly. I recommend it (tho beware, it does have blood and violence, but it's got dark comedy that i felt was done so Well!)
