Sorry brother, with love and respect but only because you have had a few negative personal experiences of not being fully embraced in the muslim communities you have been exposed to doesnt mean you should hold a grudge and shun the whole lot and definitely not isolate yourself. Maybe the charity organisation just didnt like YOU, maybe the father in law didnt like YOU. Not because your a non-brown muslim. Maybe im wrong and being insensitive as I have no idea what its like being in your shoes, but sometimes we just have to have the emotional intelligence that a society with dominant ethnicities other than yours (regardless of being muslim) will not embrace you COMPLETELY (unfortunately). Hope this didnt come across rude.

@@SherazH1 man, these are not isolated experience. I've done research for 10 years around reverts. there are lots of research and community initiatives to tackle these problems and not only about reverts. Black and disabled Muslims also suffer people who do not follow the religion. Also these things are almost non existent in other societies like with French Muslims where people are more supportive to Muslims from different cultures

I'm shocked that you've had experiences like that as a Muslim of Polish descent. I would have expected Muslims to have embraced someone who comes from a background as distinct as yours, as has been my experience as a revert Muslim. It is true that tribalism not only exists but is intractably ingrained in the culture psyche of many Muslims but it's still really surprising to hear how ostracized you were made to feel. I have experienced this tribalism myself but I do not let it bother me. My Islam is mine. If it wasn't inherited from my culture, so be it. It will be the culture and way of my progeny going forward In Sha Allah. I am a pioneer. May Allah bless you as the head of a whole nation of British and Polish Muslims, through your progeny and through your dawah and good work, and may Allah bless you for your struggles and trials, Ameen!

Don't worry brother, we experience the same in some Muslim countries in terms of tribalism, when you are not for the "tribe" some people don't accept you to be the husband of their daughter. We have to live with it I think.

I was raised as a Muslim in Saudi, and I was exposed to extreme racism and I am a Muslim from Egypt & I was racially abused in the school & and streets, and I have to fight my way. Stay strong. You will find true sincere Muslims to take as true brothers. But don't forget that as Muslims Allah will remain our most love and connection.

Indeed Kurds are the most marginalized Muslim community being oppressed by Iraq, Iran, Syria & most of all Turkiye. I really sympathize with the great nation of the great Salah Ud Din (RehmatuAllah elehe). But on the flip side, it is equally disturbing & concerning to see that Kurds in Syria & Iraq, where they have regional autonomy are treating Arabs & other minorities under them in the same way. It seems that power & authority are basic ingredients for corruption alongside arrogance and vanity. That's why Islam discourages ethnic nationalism & promote universal Islamic fraternity . Nonetheless my well wishes for you dear brother from a Muslim Pashtun.

The thing about South Asian Muslims is that they are influenced by culture of their homelands deeply. Culture in certain communities sometimes takes precedence even to religion in some matters. Many in Pakistan are affected by tribalism too. Among Indians it is the caste system.

As an Arab Muslim I sense the same discrimination but on an even more ridiculous scale. I may have the same religion, speak the same language and come from the same country but am excluded because I am not from the same village of the girls father I ask in marriage, or of the family who more or less runs the mosque. Tribalism finds its way into everything including religion but that doesn’t take away from the wider understanding of the Muslim ummah. I have no doubt if I and a fellow African Muslim were poor and in need of food and approached a mosque, that the people of the mosque would turn off their tribalism instinct and feed us equally, prioritizing the ummah. I am guilty of this tribalism bias. And if we look deep enough, we all are. The ummah is not its best state currently, but I refuse to accept that it doesn’t exist. My heart hurts for the treatment of Rohingya Muslims as it does for the Uyghurs as it does for the Palestinians.

Yes. Many reverts take that route. However in some cultures and countries inter cultural marriages are more accepted than others. Muslims in France and Spain are really chilled on the topic

Sure, some people have good experiences. I've encountered very lovely hubs in London and Cambridge. Sadly, these experiences are quite the exception. There's a lot of research and community initiatives around the discrimination against Black Muslims, disabled Muslims and white working class reverts. Fortunately, there are a lot of initiatives that have been set up for things to change, but there are still in the early days

This was very good. One of my main problems with the likes of 5 Pillars and the 'dawah scene' in general was precisely the 'us and them' rhetorical tactic used by Dilly . I've always seen it as the UK Muslim's version of the far right, and that comes from my having opposed the BNP and fellow travellers since the 90's for holding the very same ideological positions. We were successful in denying them a platform both on the streets and in public debate for decades. But these are different times. That's why Dilly can have these easy discussions, they have the same tribalistic DNA at the core of their experiences, they are both dividers along lines of identity group, rather than that of good character and conduct. It's a cultural phenomenon very much to be expected to arise from the ruins of a once 'Great' colonial power based on divide and rule according to those self same identities, and where power is exercised as the domination of one identity group over another. For most of the Muslims I have encountered around the world however, the pedantic Dawah scene, demographic point scoring, and hadith-centric Islam is not their Islam. It's almost the Islamophobic caricature. Instead I hear often that the Islam of their grandparents is about a deeply personal connection to God. There is a hadith about a prostitute who gives water to a dog, and is granted Jannah. The saintly figure in Islam is not a great politician or warrior, but a humble figure with hidden qualities. These days, people seek out Sultans or Caliphs, not Saints. With the Dawah scene it's the ambassadorial role and the lack of humility that always grated on me. I therefore viewed this new collaboration with some concern. But also to give Dilly his due respect, these were fascinating to watch. I also feel that he and his generation are mellowing with age, and the sceptre of Wahhabbi dogmatism no longer casts a shadow over everything; the Overton window is shifting. Dilly was right on Andrew Tate as well. I look forward to seeing where it all goes, and am optimistic.

Thank you for this insightful comment! I very much agree. The us/them narrative and quest for superiority never really sat well with me. But I can understand why it works, appeals to many people, and are the most vocal/popular types of channels. As you pointed out, I think it's an interesting development to see how a whole generation went from Wahhabi to salafi, and with age, marriage and parental responsibilities, a lot of the prominent voices become more nuanced and critical of themselves!

@@williambarylo The identity-based Islam dovetailed perfectly with the explosion of social media and the coming of age of that generation. A lot of hormones flying around. On the other hand. The Islam which is the selfless action of an old man gifting you some fruit when you forgot your wallet. The stillness of night prayer with the rain on the window. Families just getting on with their non-Muslim neighbours without comment or judgement. The countless times that common sense and love, take priority over textual exegesis. You can't make 'content' to promote that Islam, it's only accessible in the real world, if Allah permits one to see it. If you try to capture it, it becomes a cheap copy, and the beauty dissolves. Alhamdulillah.

It may well be down to deeper Male psychology especially in conservative societies. Referring to sociology we can see the sound bites and underlying psychology reflects really remarkably from Deep South supposed east coast liberals Hindu or Muslim conservatives and Arabs as well. There is much to explore here as these trail the white ‘supremacist’ thoughts from protecting a sort of identity.

Only way to counter any form of tribalism/nationalism is by just being normal Muslims.. That's it.. It's that simple. Just follow the Quran and Sunnah, the problems we have to solve are already something the Quran and Sunnah provided the solutions.. Keep in mind that ethno/white-nationalism is only a political position, while the average ethno/white-nationalist is a Christian, who combats Islam primarily for its opposition to the Christian civilization, not directly because the average Muslim comes from a foreign/non-white country.

@@williambarylo Generally, the average ethno-nationalist who's a Christian, is against both the Muslim immigrants and the Christian immigrants, and this also applies to ethno-nationalists who are Muslims, although there's no basis to be an ethno-nationalist within Islam, unless we're talking about the Arab ethnos.

I can understand being refused marriage since this tribalism exists all over the muslim world no matter if your parents are polish or arabs, but you were denied to work in charity? That's extremely weird. I have worked with many charities most of which had very diverse muslim workers thats where I met most non arab converts and had some of the most interesting conversation with. The idea that some "muslims" would deny ypu charity work because your parents are Polish is appalling and disgusting, sometimes I hate muslims who misrepresent islam more than islamophopes.

It took me some time to understand why (this anti Polish biais exists only in the UK) but thankfully in France, Muslims are more open to marry and hire outside their culture. I had a wonderful time there. Maybe islamophobia forces people to stick together. I just pray people that people get to learn and practice the deen more in the future.

Regarding your own story, I feel really bad. But it is not the fault of tribalism in my humble point of view. As far as my own Pashtun/ Afghan tribal culture is concerned, in fact the tribal or nomadic culture embraces anyone openly if he is valiant or open to embrace their culture. You can read Soviet soldiers assimilation im Afghan society regarding it. But more than culture, Pashtun tribal culture is more concerned about adop Islam. Secondly, tribals are very hospitable & honorable people.and more frank in their opinion than sedentary nations. The actual factual issue is that there are good & bad people in every society. In the end I would say: که سر ي، ښکلي با تور ي خو که مسلمان ي، زړه بادي ډېر ګران ي Translation: If you are red (means Pole), you are handsome brave But if you are Muslim too, you are dear to my heart.

My wife told me everyone who grows up in the UK knows. Her brother was bullied at school by other Muslim kids because they thought him going to the mosque was cringe.
