Narcissists use brutal honesty where it’s not necessary (gratuitous overkill), but if you speak one ounce of truth to them in a quiet, soft-spoken way, they lose their minds.

Yes. This was the point I was trying to put into words in my comment. They use *selective* honesty and then brutalize others with their words, they will even use your goodwill as a sign of being untrustworthy. Its absolutely sick, depresses me.

A woman at work wanted to steer my career into a new field when we knew our jobs would be made obsolete. This was a position that would benefit her needs, not something I was at all interested in. I told her I wasn't interested, and added, "I don't have any training or credentials for that anyway." Her answer was that I could "cleverly word" a set of credentials. I said, "You mean lie?" And she said, "Well, no....just cleverly word it so that it sounds plausible." I answered, "So, you mean, just LIE." She didn't answer, and we eventually went our separate ways!

This is mainly a USA problem. I'm Dutch. Were very different. The rest of the planet thinks we are: rude, blunt, direct, arrogant, stoic, unfriendly , offending etc. And we are known for the worst customer service too. I didnt realise how big the difference was until I got a USA boyfriend and a lot of usa acquaintances. When interacting with them everybody was ( still is )always super shocked and offended by me. Even when I'm being super nice. 🤣 I finally looked it up if there was a cultural difference and learned how the rest of the world sees us the Dutch. Haha We cannot handle fakeness, beating around the bush and people that get offended by WORDS ..🙄 USA is VERY political correct.

II think some of them often like to hide behind the pretension of honesty in order to be cruel. I think perhaps it depends on the motivation, and with narcissist the motivation is never to your benefit, it isn't benevolent. We have companies that tell you that they have all the answers and that we have to be "bold" in life, just to swindle people into a quick reaction. In other words, I think theres a way to be honest and open without being cruel, and I think that is a concept that is completely foreign to them. I hope that's understandable.

I teach Business English in German companies. Germans and Scandinavians have a very direct manner of speaking. The languages are factual. My business people hate the „sugar coating beating around the bushes language“ of Americans. You need a very good level of English proficiency to get the idioms, euphemisms and „jokes“. 🙄

I am German and I do agree. I probably couldn't have EVER lived in the U.S. because I do naturally hate hypocrisy and bigotry in Germany already very much. There's in fact NOTHING that makes me envy Americans for (except perhaps their nice wooden front door porches and swing chairs but then the isolation of the house is still pathetic). 😊😅

Permission To Exist yes, I‘ve got quite a few friends from the US and Britain who live here in Germany. When they first came they found German directness rude. They all speak perfect German now and have come to appreciate the ease of direct communication. Now when they talk with relatives in Britain/the US the relatives complain that they have become rude🙄😳🤣🙄🙄. I think it‘s a lot of fun. Languages. When I was a student in the US I found the „always be happy never be negative“ attitude quite tiring and insincere. I prefer directness - say what you mean and what you want. With a smile 😁

@@PermissionToExist What I have (generally spoken) learned from diverse American Christian YTC is how most commenteers very often feel offended if I lack of certain 'politeness rituals' in soft language when calling a spade a spade as I'm normally used to. I have also learned that many true Christian brethren have a severe problem with discernment of (scriptural) truth. You might call it 'cognitive dissonance' quite often how they deal with it. I assume this is because they grew up in this 'soft language bubble' all of their life and never got outside to look onto their own hypocrisy to discern. I guess if you're surrounded by and accustomed to soft lies all the time you completely lose discernment of true and false. This might be a problem of American society in general as this 'bubble' goes across the whole continent and most never leave the country because it is so huge. In Europe there's much more diversity of nationalities and mentalities and Germans are right in the middle of all of them and traveling is easy. So learning discernment in Europe is not that big of a deal even if euphemisms and 1984-language propaganda have also increased. There are quite a few fellow U.S. 'truthers' though and to be fair I owe them for their brilliant research and information on many topics. Yet these communication differences are very real.

@@tamars_hope Ha!
