Those Knipex 81 11 250 soft jaw pliers see a lot of aerospace use in dealing with 'Cannon' type electrical connectors/plugs. They're almost universally termed 'Cannon Plug Pliers' in the biz.

These are heaven sent in aviation. However, I wish they made long reach soft jaw pliers that have the same bend as spark plug pliers. There are some cannon plugs in very tight spaces on the Boeing 737. It would allow us to go in vertically and loosen/tighten versus trying to come in at a 90-degree angle.

I use the soft Jaw pliers for tightening our forklifts propane connector. 😊. A great video brother. Knipex .

Knipex cobras have soft jaw protectors available as well. They just came out with the new ones, and should be available soon.

Yep, the jaw condoms, work well unless you're really cranking on something, then the teeth will bite through

Those Knipex jaw covers look pretty slick, I see I can find them on Amazon for a little under ten bucks. Seems a couple layers of electrical tape would do about the same thing though. (Reminds me of the scene in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance where the guy with the BMW couldn't abide the thought of a cut out piece of Coca Cola can being used as a shim on his fine German machine, so they limped the bike to a BMW mechanic, where the guy cut a similar piece and presented it as being proper German shim stock, BMW approved. Probably cut it out of a Heineken can instead.)

I love that scene. People get pretentious at the worst times. I find a lot of joy in fixing things and making my own tools with trash. Yes electrical tape works in a pinch but the ease of use and convenience of the jaw covers is a pleasure. But honestly, whatever makes you feel good is worth more than anything.

Yes! Great book. Great scene. The can was the same thickness and made from decent aluminum! Talk about marketing and branding! Don't tell me humans aren't programmable.

In all fairness those jaw covers are quicker to install than tape and more trustworthy when working on something delicate and/or hard to replace. After a few uses, the jaws will break through the tape.✌🏼

Heineken is Dutch, though 😀 Is that a nice read?

These red caps shown at the beginning are great when used on chrome nuts, ie bathtube faucet.

Those snap on adjustables are some of the best money ive ever spent in my professional life. Them, and a full set of cobras have got me through so many tough jobs and daily use.

Husky 1003 005 152 is a 10" V-jaw tongue & groove option. It has slip on jaw covers like the Knipex. Oh, I forgot the SK 7625 cannon plug pliers with pinned on soft jaws.

Hello again Doc Thank you for another Great Video 👍 I have pair of Cannon Plug Pliers that have the soft jaws. For aircraft electrical connections. I have often wondered why I couldn't find a stiffer jaw? As you saw the slipping. Again thank you 😊

Knipex offers two different insert types for that pair of pliers, the other one looks harder (red only)

Another good one! I have a pair of Japanese soft grip, slip joints that just don't work for my application. I need to be able to grab and turn thin round nuts against a flat surface without damaging either. Jaw covers that wrap around the sides of the jaw have an unsupported edge that tends to smush. The Knipex with the red/blue covers looks like it's worth a try. Any suggestions?

Hey Doc, could you please share the PN on that red Snap-On screwdriver? I don’t think I’ve seen one that small with a knurled shaft. Btw I remember the soft jaw pliers being advertised as lens pliers or maybe I’m mistaking it for another pliers set I purchased with UHMW inserts.

This is why I don’t understand why tool companies only build metal ones. For anything made of softer material than metal, they’ll ruin your fixture.

Which one would serve best to use to unscrew aerators from the tips of water faucets? Of course, the aerators are in metal caps that screw on to the faucet ends.

Soft/non marring jaws can be easily 3d printed for any tool with TPU plastic. Almost trivial if there is a cad model for the pliers. Copies can be orders by mail from 3d printing farm. Worth trying.. maybe someone already have a library for popular tools

The Knipex options are really poorly designed and I wouldn’t recommend them. The IPS range of “soft touch” pliers (5 in total) are far superior and relatively inexpensive. Plus, they’re spring loaded and come with 3 extra plastic jaws.
