The play was over. F4 had enough time to toss the ball back to the pitcher which means he had enough time to step out of the runner's way. He caused that collision, and topped it off with pushing the runner down AGAIN and standing over him flexing. That'll rightly get you knocked the F out by any self-respecting ballplayer.

That's what slides are for. The runner is at fault here. Also, the play was way too close to go around punching someone for what you thought was intentional.

And you can't say the 2nd baseman deserved it because most would do that in a situation where the runner tries to truck them.

@@timjensen6968 My team has been in a situation like that. Opposing team had a reputation of bullying. Their runner put a cheap shot on my infielder and it took him to the ground. My shortstop came in and beat the brakes off that kid. They started telling the umpire and league official to call the police. Their response was "do it yourself. You started it." Whether it's self defense or defense of another, I believe there is a little bit of leeway you can work with if you aren't excessive.

Rules of slow pitch softball requires the runner to slide or get out of the way. He got tangled up with the defender cuz he didn't follow the rules. The defender was wrong to push him, but the runner was wrong to throw a punch. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Definitely think the 2nd baseman was the aggressor in this altercation, though both sides have some fault. Looks like runner ran to the base and then tripped. He fell down and was trying to keep his balance and grabbed the 2nd baseman's arm which pulled the 2nd basemen down. The 2nd basemen believed he was trying to harm him, so got upset and aggressively pushed him off of him. Runner pissed, and clocks him... The runner could have avoided running into the 2nd basemen if he slid of course. At the same time, with old people playing softball not many people slide as it is too much effort, they are too lazy, don't have pants, or are scared of hurting themselves. I believe that is why the dude did not slide and sparked this whole issue, I still think the 2nd baseman turned it malicious when he turned it up a notch and pushed down the runner though...

Two points to make. First, when you get physical with someone, it changes the dynamic of the situation. The old rules don't apply. That's a lesson for the 2B. Second, whenever you use force in self-defense, it has to be proportional to the threat that was presented. There isn't much of a threat in this situation, so the runner's going to have a hard time justifying his punch.

It appears to me the runner had a slight stumble going into the bag. As he fell he reached out and grabbed the fielder. I think he did that to try to keep from falling or to brace his fall. I don't think he was trying to pull the fielder down. Then the fielder cheaply pushes the runner to the ground. The runner then punches the fielder in the face. A) The fielder shouldn't have pushed the runner down. B) The runner shouldn't have punched the fielder in the face, a cheap shot....although the fielder deserved it. C) It should have been "on" right there...but the fielder pussed out and didn't retaliate. If that was me and I took a cheap shot from that guy I would have gone at him, fists flying. D) It's softball. Who gives a crap....although I apparently did with this analysis.

Fat League Softball rules don't require sliding, or any quick running adjustments that would blow out a knee. Runner led with his stomach as is required but tripped over the bag. Grabbing other players is forbidden but there is a Keep-From-Falling exception, with a "But Not In The Balls" Comment added.

Perfect example of a sign of the times today. The baserunner was at fault many times over. He was out by twenty feet. You dont go into the base standing up, unless you want your nose broke. By the ball or a fist. And you dont grab the 2B, and try to drag them down. After the baserunner was knocked out cold, he should have been kicked out of the game. By either umpire. We don't know what happened previous to this play. What we do know is the runner is falling to the ground and decides to try and hold on to the runner to keep himself up (not malicious IMO). Then the fielder wants to be a tough guy by aggressively pushing the guy down to the ground harder, probably not expecting that kind of reaction. Baserunner gets up and cold cocks him in the jaw. Not a sucker punch because even the fielders teammates saw trouble even before the baserunner got off of the ground, but the teammates were a lil late getting in between to stop the haymaker.
