The Whispers were truly the vocal disco band in the late 70s and early 80s. I remember Russell Thompkins Junior from the Stylistics who had a similar high voice to these guys as we all know. I'm sure these guys were influenced a little by the Stylistics. Superb video. I was 23 in 1981 when this hit our chart. Superb.

This song is fascinating when you really put your ear to it. The rhythm carries the melody throughout the entire song. Yet it's never repetitive or overbearing. There's a lot going on within the instrumentation as well as the vocal performances of WHISPERS in every section of the song. No part is exactly the same. Everything in this song just seems to totally click. Great composition and recording. It's a masterpiece of our BLACK music talent and culture!

After graduating high school I worked at the local Wal-Mart for a couple years on the overnight shift. There was this skinny, Jewish guy named Karl that would listen to The Whispers when he was the guy that had to unload the truck. Unloader picked the music... That's how it went. A couple of the black guys and Karl would head into the city on the weekends to do some Steppin'. Karl loved the HEAVY Sistas. I would have loved to see a video of 145lbs Karl out on the dance floor Steppin' with a couple of 4 bill Sistas.

This is about 15 years before I could go to night clubs legally. But my mom kept her young brother who stayed with us for years, he was of the disco going age and was the uncle that greatly influenced my love for music. This is 1982-3, my uncle could not stop talking about the whispers. He used say that the whispers were the only band that a DJ could get away with playing 7 consecutive songs from the same band and still keep people on the dance floor. They had that many dance floor fillers. So my African American brothers and sisters, this was Africa, Zambia, in Lusaka in the early eighties. The biggest nightclub in Lusaka was Valentino's and disco 22 ( which was on the 22nd floor of a sky scraper). So back then, we Africans were not as backward as you guys may have thought. Hahaa
