Interesting that they didn´t mention the time when his team was tasked to find a downed recon plane in North Iran, his team was the only one who made it, also they didn´t clarify that he is indeed confirmed KIA, it just took them some years to do, for example they recovered this personal weapon which I think was Carl Gustav m/45 smg, basically Swedish suomi, and it wasn't standard issue to the troops, so it's very likely it was his. (even though it was in use by clandestine units) Also I think DNA has been confirmed by now. Otherwise very good documentary.

Marja waited for Lauri for years, only receiving 2 or more letters from him, because of many years of seperation she decided to marry another man. Törni really seemed like a restless soul, always eager to fight, but I was actually glad to learn, that even though he ended up leaving his woman to Sweden, he had found someone to love, just for a while at least, and therefore his life wasn't completely just violence and always thinking what would be the next move to make. Technically he broke the Finnish-USSR peace treaty (FInland had to cut ties with Germany and not ally with it and drive Germany out) and hence treason charge. By the time the Sonderkommando Nord happened..... Technically, again, Finland and Germany were enemies due to Lapland War. So technically working with the war conducting Germany, he was working with at the time in Finland's official enemy Germany. Hence the treason charge. He was technically guilty of treason, he most likely would just never been charged had Finland had any choice in the matter. In reality: He was Lauri Törni, the soviet oversight commitee over the piece wanted him trialed and jailed, so he was. His sonderkommando stint gave good official legal reason. Heck President Ryti was also jailed. Everybody knew the war-responsibility trials were a show for benefit of Soviets and Soviets way to punish Finland as a nation by forcing Finland to jail important people from the war who Finland thought as heroes. Everyone knew it was kangaroo court, but well it was that or couple hundred thousand soviet troops over the border. Better national humiliation, than national destruction. Nobody in Finland really considered any of the people traitors (well outside hard line communists), but knew that officially they had to be such. There was the truth and then the official truth. Everyone knew what the truth was, but also knew for sake of national survival official truth had to be observed in public in press, news papers etc. So called finlandization. There was the stuff talked in papers and then there was the stuff talked in sauna and kitchen. He didn't leave Finland out of fear. He left because as career soldier he had no career prospect. He had been soldier for his whole adult professional life and had no other schooling or trade. There was one thing he couldn't do, that Soviet wouldn't tolerate: Be an officer in Finnish military. Enemy number 1 couldn't be training the next Finnish army. Other more nameless people had to do that. Not to mention ahemm the whole treason charge kinda would have made it technically hard to justify for Finnish Defence forces. So he left to Sweden in secret. Not due to KGB, but because he was in parole violation over his treason charge. When he was pardoned, he was pardoned to parole and his parole time was still on going. As parolee he wasn't supposed to leave the country. Had he walked to Finnish border guard post under his own name, they would have been duty bound to arrest him for parole violation. Hence taking a friends passport to cross the border. And then he continued to USA, since he had heard he had career chances in USA. Many of the earlier Finnish goers were part of founding and creation of the special forces and related activities. So they knew to tell him, USA was hiring European veterans with suitable specialist knowledge. Like Törni had about behind enemy lines operations and winter warfare. Plus well USA and USSR were enemies, so I'm sure he thought it was good way to be a thorn on USSRs side.

It is more complicated than that. His decision to serve in Germany broke the Finnish-Soviet peace treaty. And although not clearly enough said in the video...Finland had not become communist state, Soviets *forced* the trials of may war heros and political leaders. For example our president I think was charged with starting offensive war....it is true, but I don't remember seeing Stalin been charged for same thing lol

Aw man, you missed all the info about the CIA as well. Thorne was actually tracked down by William Donovan (famed OSS and CIA director) while working in New York. The OSS was well aware of him during WW2. He befriended some legends in the US intel community. It's possible Thorne helped create the Green Berets and had a hand in developing the CIA too. Oh, and he also parachuted into Iran for a few missions as well. The guy is an OG example of sheep dipping. So awesome.

@@christiandauz3742 In this series, no, but in my own research, the research of others, and even Indy's other channel on WW2. there's seldom any mention of Finnish war crimes and atrocities. Usually the worst that is mentioned is refusing the surrender of encircled and starving Soviet units, letting them die from the elements because they couldn't clear the encirclements themselves. Well, that and the use of Molotov Cocktails which weren't considered a warcrime until after WW2. Finland and her people fought for their homes, and, even when they were given the option to do worse, to kill civilians, they usually didn't, because that wasn't the war they were waging.

If your looking for Vietnam stuff I highly recommend Carlos Hathcok. 93 confirmed kill and had the longest range kill on record for decades. He also rescued a crew from a burning apc. He stalked and killed an enemy commander in his own base shooting him in the chest at 800 yards all the while crawling on his belly. A bad ass worthy of a sabaton song imho.

14:00 Yes, exactly! That's what I've always wanted to hear. I know it's probably difficult to implement, but 2 almost the same songs about the 2 sides of a battle or whatever with the same underlying rythm and melodies/riffs, but of course their own lyrics and with different instrument tunes/background insturments/choirs, etc. to keep them unique.

Vietnam has some great stories from both sides. The VC ambush of French Mobile 100, the Air Cav in ‘65, Carlos Hathcock, Khe Sanh and Tet just to name a few. It was a long war.

Once again great episode. I may have missed it in the previous episode but how exactly did Lauri Törni earn the iron cross? Also, I wish I could show this to you because I found this book at grandmother's house from 1942 talking about Mannerheims 75th birthday with speaches and lots of pictures of gifts he got and of him with german officers, soldiers and Hitler. It's really interesting how formally all the germans are presented. Maybe when you come back to Finland I'll show it to you.

I couldn't find anything specific about Törni. The fact is that multiple Finns were awarded the Iron Cross, including three Finnish Jews, all of whom rejected the award. One of those was a medical officer called Leo Skurnik. This is copied from Wikipedia: "In September 1941, Skurnik organized the evacuation of a field hospital in heavy Soviet artillery shelling near Kiestinki, saving the lives of 600 wounded men, including Waffen-SS members. Skurnik split the evacuees into small formations and timed their departures between the artillery barrages. The German liaison headquarters, headed by General Waldemar Erfurth, proposed awarding the Iron Cross to Skurnik for the effort deemed heroic, a proposal which was accepted in Berlin. However, Skurnik refused to accept the award and reportedly stated to Lieutenant General Hjalmar Siilasvuo, who informed him of the decision, "My good friend, do you think I can take that kind of decoration? Tell your German colleagues that I wipe my arse with it!" Skurnik's rebuff caused the Germans to respond with open annoyance.".

From a young man fighting in Finland during the forties to a War Hero fighting in the Sixties. What a legend this man was. I do hope that we will see you guys again together soon. We were under actual lockdown. Joakim was in full quarantine and couldn't leave his house, so no crew or tech anybody to set things up.
