I just bought one of these. I love the sound of it. I have an RG13 3 channel preamp also that’s very good, but I like the contour knob and getting that slightly scooped thump quite a bit. Also have an SNK VHD (Ampeg VH140c dirty channel) pedal and a Master Effects Martyr pedal (Marshall 8100 OD1/OD2). Martyr has the contour knob on it also. These amps (and preamps) are relatively cheap compared to a lot of other amps and I actually prefer the solid state sounds over my tube Dual Rec or Diezel Herbert sounds I get from my tube preamps + tube power amps. I write in mostly C tuning last couple years. The solid state amps (or those specialized SS preamps) are a lot of fun and won’t break the bank. I think one of my favorite modern metal sounds is my SS AMT Stonehead amp I’ve had about 10 years. I should get a lot of use out of the Randall though and won’t mind lugging it around and beating it up a little more. SNK also makes the full two channel pedal of the VH140c and he makes the VH300 amp - a smaller sized recreation of the Ampeg VH140c in a compact 300 watt (@4 ohm) head. It still puts out 150 watts at 8 ohm and a blasting 75 still at 16 ohm. $1000 though new. Those Ampegs are hard to find. Video was great - good showcase of the RX120rh.

With an eq or boost you can get it pretty darn close
@Stretchwreckedem4692 жыл бұрын
I'd love to see how well this amp pairs with a 6 band graphic EQ in the loop. I've done it with an Orange Crush Pro 120 and got that amp to sound on par with a lot of the old solid state amps of the 90's myself. With the 6 band in the loop, the EQ pedal becomes your general EQ, and the knobs on your amp basically act in a similar way to a parametric EQ. You can crank the treble to add some bite to the amp going straight in and make it sound like it's already being boosted, you can adjust the midrange knob itself and choose the exact amount of midrange presence you'd like without sacrificing the midrange character you're trying to go for, and by turning the bass all the way down and using the graphic EQ to add all your bass it's basically just like if you had a boost going in front of the amp already. You can still definitely use a boost in front of the amp to tighten things up even more if you wish to do so, but i've always found that throwing a 6 band EQ in the loop of a solid state amp really brings it to life. The thing that has me the most curious though is how the contour knob will behave with that kind of a setup. I kinda wonder if it would make it easier to use the amp going straight in, or if it would make using the graphic EQ for your general EQ adjustments a bit tricky. 🤔

Just get yourself the newer and much improved “Orange Super Crush 100.” It’s on another level to all the 80’s-90’s offerings. I Had the CR120H with 2x12 open back Orange Cab (with V30’s) and I didn’t get along with it much. Was fizzy in the top end at high gain settings, especially with single note lines. Later I found out you should never run a Crush Pro with “open back cab with V30’s,” both contributed to the high end solid-state harsh fizz. (This is also the case with other SS amps) The CR120 is ok, much like my “Bandit Red Strip,” but nothing special. The Super Crush is on another level though. No harsh top-end fizz, (without the need to EQ in the loop) But most importantly is sings and responds like a tube/valve amp does. Has the same harmonic overtones as a valve amp when soloing and as a shredder 🎸 that’s very important to me. You could always throw an EQ & Compressor pedal in the fx loop too take it a little further, but that really isn’t needed. Has all tonal presence you could ever want imo. The only thing separating the Super Crush from the Rockerverb MIII is the low-end punch of the all valve amp. But that can get in the way of the Bass players frequencies and tends to be cut from the mix. So I wouldn’t cry about the slight lack of low-end. Other than this I don’t hear or feel any difference. I’ve owned many Orange amps throughout the years (valve,hybrid and SS) and this is my favourite of the lot. The Rockerverb was my favourite until Orange come out with the Super Crush 100. Do I think the Rockerverb sounds better? Yeah, a little. But replacing that many valves along with the price rises, weight and reliability factor, I’d much rather use a all solid state version of it. The Crush Pro isn’t quite there to be called a Solid state Rockerverb, but the Super Crush 100 most definitely is. Go give it a try in some music store, it’s incredible.

@@jazznotes3802 Im looking at this randall and the SC100. I cant make my mind up on which..
@jazznotes38022 жыл бұрын
@@Crusader1097 If your into Heavy Metal both are great. The Randall and Orange do however sound very different and the SC100 needs an overdrive in front of it, to really come alive. (For metal) I believe the SC100 is a better sounding amp all round, where the Randall’s a one trick pony, although it does that one trick very well. But I can see your dilemma, as they’re both great SS amps. Just the Orange has more of a harmonic/pleasing distortion.

@gentlewolf1279 Жыл бұрын
The gain you are hearing in the demo is from the amp. The overdrive out front is only adding a bit of mids and tightness. It’s also dependent on the type of metal you want to play. But all in all it’s a cool amp

My man, good demo, but if you have the ability, get some space between your guitar and the cab you are mic-ing up. You get a lot of room noise in your mic and hearing the string noise was nearly louder than the amp and actually makes picking the amp out kinda tricky. New sub though. I've loved and gigged Randall amps for a long time and this amp in particular is a sleeper. I bought one for $50 at a garage sale a few years back and it was worth ten times that in value honestly.
@gentlewolf12792 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Bill. The guitar/amp was actually captured with it running through a Suhr reactive load straight into the computer. Unfortunately, the string noise is coming from the cameras audio. Ill keep that in mind for the next video though! Thinking of doing a video on my HIWATT or Triple Crown next. Cheers!
