I disagree with the grumpiness you mentioned. You have to take into account that this is a younger Han. He hasn’t really experienced anything yet to build him up to the Han he eventually grows up to be. I’m sure that’s anyone when they’re young. They’re optimistic and okay with embracing life yet as people grow older they slightly change based on what’s happened to them. Just something I’d thought I’d point out.

I disagree with you about Han needing to be cynical at this point. This is 10 years before we meet him in A New Hope. Clearly, the movie is trying to help us see the core of who Han is and then see how the layers of cynicism, lack of trust, lack of hope, etc. got built up over time because of things like, you know, the person you love most in the world betraying you. I loved how they handled Han in this movie and think the writers and director understood totally the core aspects of his character. Despite his smuggling, his arrogance, his sarcasm, etc., Han is ultimately a good guy, just like Qi'ra said in the film. Solo was by no means a perfect movie, but it was a lot of fun and I think they did the subject matter justice. I was never bored and thought the relationships between the characters was really interesting. Qi'ra was a great addition and is a complex character that I would like to see more of. I am truly saddened by the box office returns on this movie and afraid it means we will never see a sequel. -- Jessica from Drawing Conclusions, the marriage of movies and art

I think it's fitting that Han is a little more idealistic and less cynical in this film - it shows that Han's good-natured soft spot for the underdogs was a character trait he always had. But... that was before the love of his life abandoned him and before he had a price on his head from Jabba. The movie doesn't really give us the whole backstory, so there's still plenty of room for his character to get to a more familiar place.
@murmor68906 жыл бұрын
Adding more dramatic sequences for character development would also push the problem of having to imitate Harrison Ford. SPOILER: I also feel like "the event where he shoots first" at the end of this movie is strangely ignored, that adds a hell of a darker side and loss of idealism to the character.
@adamfox95996 жыл бұрын
I agree. Very rarely is a person cynical and “grumpy” straight away. In this film he’s young and a bit green. The Han Solo we know has been doing this for years by a new hope. People change and become weary of life. I know I’m a right miserable bastard now haha
@0Fyrebrand06 жыл бұрын
That "shooting first" thing was genius. It's like he wasn't even shooting one guy in that scene, he was shooting at the whole universe. Everything he had was crumbling apart, his closest friends/loved ones betrayed him, and he was just like "Oh yeah? Well FUCK YOU then!!" It didn't even click for me in the moment, that it was a nod to the cantina scene. I just thought it was a brilliant character scene. That realization changed him, and it's something he's carried with him ever since.

The sequels just made me sad because all of the episodes 1 to 6 happens to be "useless". I for one love the changes they made with Han and Lando's relationship. It makes the OT Han and Lando unreliable narrators, which is one of my favorite tropes in any story telling. Making the characters tell versions of the story that don't line up, like what happened with Luke and Kylo in 8, invites the viewer to get way more invested in the story as they understand it than they would have been otherwise.

A few things (SPOILERS): 1) this movie is about trust, and how Han loses his. It develops him in that sense. At the beginning of the film, he is a loyal person who - while he doesn't respect authority - respects and trusts people who are similarly rebellious. That trust erodes as the film progresses (Lando's cheating, the Enfys Nest twist, Beckett's betrayal, Qi'ra's turn) until by the end he's empty of it (except with Chewie, who's proven to be a loyal friend despite having opportunities for betrayal). 2) The nice thing about Alden Ehrenreich's performance is that he ISN'T simply imitating Harrison Ford. That's down to the character arc described above. He's definitely charming and likable, but he's also naive and vulnerable. This isn't the "shields-up" Han Solo we know from the OT and ANH, but this film does start to inform us how he got there, and Ehrenreich does a decent job of selling that progression. He's not great by any means, but I don't think it's accurate to say he's imitating Ford in any way. 3) Is it not possible that Han isn't gruff and short-tempered with colleagues because: a) he's not there yet as a character, in part because of the things described above? b) there's not any real incompetence from secondary characters on display? 4) As the culmination of all the points above, complaining that there's no arc for Solo and that nothing is done to deepen his character is contradictory to the other complaint which is that he's not the same character you loved in the OT and TFA. He's a different character because he's younger, more optimistic and more naive, and through the film he begins to lose that naivete and optimism, which brings him more in line with his later self. All of which leaves me confused: do you actually want character growth or do you want the same old Han you know from the OT? Because you can't have it both ways. For the record, I don't think this movie was particularly great (for different reasons), but the character thing - which is clearly your biggest gripe - is something they got right.

I get the trust theme, but it didn’t land well, and I’m not blaming anyone because the behind the camera issues were well televised. Him losing trust wasn’t complemented well with, for one, noticeable change in demeanor, and two, actions taken up besides that one amazing scene. The way he goes after x(avoiding spoilers) near the very very end doesn’t really exemplify a change in demeanor. The actor maintains a consistent affect through out the entire film. I think this is a script issue because a change in demeanor would force him to take up different actions at the card table, and maybe plan something else entirely away from the card table. If it was planned for him to maintain his demeanor and affect while taking up only one drastically different action then the writers may be waiting for his affect to change after the love of his life betrays him. Even then it’s a bit of a missed opportunity, because we get to see him acquire things that we know he acquires from some where, we get to see him do things that were mentioned in passing in the original trilogy, but we never get an emotional impact. The pivotal action taking scene in Solo was absolutely amazing but was sadly contrasted by what he did immediatly and a few scenes later. The writers seemed to get in their own way. I understand why the card table was reintroduced, I get it, I’m really into film. Solo is a good film but only on paper to me, and I get why it is that way and hopefully Howard gets to correct things if they’re given another green light.
@drewgreene60276 жыл бұрын
I think what even smart movie reviewers are missing is that there is a character arc with Han and he's not going to act EXACTLY like he did in Episodes 4-6. Yes, there are hints of some of it, which is a good thing, but this movie did a good job of starting to explain WHY he started losing his optimistic approach on life. He found his love of his life and she left him/tricked him at the end. And we see a definitive moment of change when he shoots first. I think there is still a lot of development between the end of this movie and when we first see him in Episode 4. I really enjoyed the movie.

I think Solo and Rogue One are two of the best films Disney has produced since buying Lucasfilm. Solo has a strong script, great acting and characters, and captures the fun energy of A New Hope. And Alden Ehrenreich delivers big time, not copying Harrison, but doing his own thing. He’s fantastic. What I loved most was Han and Chewie earning their friendship with the audience gradually, starting as enemies. That’s great writing and performance. And a huge mountain to climb after 10 films of knowing these characters. Hats off to Ron Howard for saving this film and turning it into a damn good movie.

I could handle Han being less cynical because he was young and had dreams. It's by the end of the movie you can see that what he goes through could turn him bitter. It would have been better to show the transformation but it worked for me nonetheless. Also I'm surprised by so many reviews saying this movie was lackluster. To me it felt the most authentically Star Wars since the original trilogy. Force Awakens was rinse and repeat... and dull. The Last Jedi was incredible in spots with how it took chances but it also fell down in places feeling a bit more like the prequel trilogy at times. Still a great movie but it didn't feel 100% old school. Not the best movie ever but I had fun watching Solo. It had real spark in set design, creature design and action. It surprised me given the bumpy production.
@drawingconclusions34896 жыл бұрын
I mostly agree with you, except that I think it would have been a bit much to see Han turn bitter by the end. We only see him for a few minutes after Beckett turns on him and a few seconds after Qi'ra flies off without him. If this movie gets any sequels, I think we will see some of that in the future. One of the best moments of the film for me was seeing Han shoot Beckett, actually, because we do see him moving more towards the Han we meet in A New Hope. I thought the movie was a ton of fun and was much better than I was expecting it to be. I really wish fans would give it a chance. -- Jessica from Drawing Conclusions, the marriage of movies and art

Completely agree about it actually feeling like a Star Wars movie worthy of the original trilogy, especially the escape in the Millennium Falcon scene. I really don't know where all the hate comes from because to me the other movies felt a lot more forced and tried a little too hard.

I watched it recently on BlueRay the first time and had no expectations and the movie suprised me in a positive way. Its really well made and also Alden Ehrenreich acts pretty good as the new Han Solo. You´re also right in the most points of your Review, but i disagree that Han Solos young charakter should be that kind of sarcastic like it is in the old movies. I think this is a kind of development a charakter walks through based on his experiences mostly with some incompetent people you mentioned. But a charakter needs expierence in first place, to see how stupid the others are. Anyway nice video man :)
@ryanpatrick19845 жыл бұрын
I usually agree with your viewpoints but not on this one. I went into this movie with little to no expectations because so many people panned it. I was absolutely blown away. I think it definitely showed us the beginning of the transformation into the Han we know and love in the original trilogy. The first 25 minutes of this film were so tight and perfect that I almost cried. Also with these Star Wars Story movies I don't think that all of them are going to give us this grand insight into the universe or the origin of the characters. I think some of them (like SOLO) are just fun Star Wars stories for us to all enjoy and see cool shit happen in the Star Wars universe that we all love. I know you're a critic and that's your job to dissect films and I greatly admire your work and am a fan of yours. However I think a film like this was created to just simply enjoy and not be picked apart. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy this movie as much as I did.

So, basically the main complaint is the same thing fans flagged up when this film first went into production: it doesn't need to exist. Right from the get-go people were telling Lucasfilm that no-one wanted a Han Solo movie. They went ahead anyway, encountered various problems along the way (maybe that was a sign guys) and now we have a film that most people aren't hyped about and is getting lukewarm reviews. Looks like the 'toxic fanbase' knows a thing or two after all. You should've concentrated either on a movie based around a character people want to see more of (Obi Wan, Boba Fett, Yoda maybe...characters who don't need to be recast with an inferior pretender) or come up with a completely new story with either new characters or set during a different point in the timeline.

Just done watching it. And I could say, the movie was pretty damn good. I don't get how a lot of people hate or throw shade on this film, only basing on the fact that it was the lowest grossing star wars film made so far. But I think the problem is not on the movie or even the casts, but on the marketing. It was essentially announced (or marketed) just 3 months before the premiere, and that in itself is a red flag, considering it had tough competitions like Avengers:Infinity Wars, Incredibles 2, Deadpool 2, etc. They should've started on promotions way before that timeframe, or even move the official release date later, if need be. And I hope Disney would learn form that. The movie deserves better acknowledgement. Also, I think SOME of them assumed Solo isn't worth it, as it came after TFA. I'm not saying TFA isn't a good movie as well, IT IS, but we can't deny that there are people who was disappointed for CERTAIN reasons. The casting was unexpectedly spot-on. Alden Ehrenreich as young Han Solo was surprisingly intimately tuned into the character, as he was not at all trying-hard to be Harrison Ford's Han Solo, but just doing HAN SOLO. It made the character look genuine and TRUE to its origins. I would say Alden stood up to his character very well. It goes the same with other casts.
@franzhaas68896 жыл бұрын
I THOUGHT SOLO WOULD SUCK. BUT THIS WAS REALLY GOOD. THIS FELT LIKE A STAR WARS FILM. THE PEAPLE WERE CLAPPING AT THE END OF THE MOVIE. NOT TO MENTION A CERTAIN SITH LORD NEAR THE END WAS AWSOME.

They ARE taking inspiration from the Old Republic universe, but in their own shitty way. Just look at Kylo Ren's clothes, he is supposed to be Disney's version of Revan. The thing is that Disney just wants to grab some cash and Star Wars is profitable as fuck. It's the perfect way to make some money without putting any effort at all, so that's why they axed the Expanded Universe, which granted, was plagued with a LOT of shitty stuff but the good things were still there ( like the Timothy Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy )and Disney didn't wanted any of the good things in the EU to be canon so they could avoid comparisons and actually working hard to create something good. They prefer to throw some fanservice in the middle and call it a day.

I know exactly why Disney won't make any films about the Old Republic: The Old Republic is from the prequels... three of the most *HATED* films of all time. Back in the 2000s, hating the prequels was one of the easiest ways to score a ton of views on KZbin (see Mr. Plinkett's reviews). People have even made documentaries about how much the prequels were loathed, like "The People vs. George Lucas". After the enormous backlash the prequels received, Disney won't touch anything related to them with a ten-foot pole.

I give this movie higher marks than Chris. Honestly, I'm older now. I recognize that Star Wars wasn't really ever anything you could think too hard about. It really reminded me of the Solo novels from the early 80's. They were just fun. Solo was pretty credible within the universe and it helped flesh out the world and the backstory between Lando and Han. I didn't expect much more than that, and it satisfied. Chris didn't much like Rogue One either. I LOVED that movie. The main character was the Death Star, and I ate it up.

Han Solo did have character development. He is young and naive this film. He is in love with Kira. He needs to fall into that cynical scoundrel that we love from the original series. Han is adventurous. I knew all the things he was going to do in the film and yet I was cheering him on. I mean was almost in tears on how happy I was to see an actual Star Wars film. Unlike that horrible Rogue One that had characters I did not care about, too many meaningless planets, and a story that was incorrectly told. Yet those two movies are not Star Wars movies. Solo is a Star Wars movie. You reviewers watch too many movies for the sake of reviews. Watch what you love, and don't be afraid to say, screw it, I'll watch what I want. Man here is the problem with most reviewers today, they don't have someone work off of. That's why Siskel and Ebert worked, because they could spar with one another on reviews. No one will read this probably, however it is partly our fault that we are getting crappy movies in the theaters. We rag so hard that the studios have no idea what to do.

You are my favorite reviewer! But this is the first time I have disagreed with your assessment. I loved this movie. You talk about how to love character development in the Star Wars movies, but then you criticize this movie for not having purpose. The purpose of this movie was a back story of Hans as a young man showing why he acts in the manner he does. That is what justifies this movie. I loved it! And know this: no hating in this comment.... you are still my favorite reviewer! Keep it up!
@cashclay21611 ай бұрын
I think getting Hans origin story added a lot of depth to his character, I strongly disagree with this being a money grab, I mean what Star Wars fans don’t want origin stories to our most beloved characters? Also the opportunity to see first hand the origin to some of the core moments of Han, meeting Cheewie and Lando, getting the Falcon, the entire Storm scene, that is what we want as fans. Doesn’t matter if we’ve heard it be talked about, we get to see it! Think of all the incredible dialogue we’ve had of stories of ancient characters and traditions, imagine some of the incredible movies they could make with these stories! How is that a bad thing we got it here? Also the fact Han isn’t cynical is a good thing, that cynicism came with age, I loved how they didn’t make him a grumpy old man because guess what? He’s not a grumpy old man yet!

Sacul Movie Reviews whats wrong with it having a short timespan?

Frankly, I'm a little surprised by your comments that Han lacks development in "Solo". Much of "Solo" is devoted to presenting a hopeful, optimistic, cocky, yet very naive Han whose sense of adventure, romance and hopeful enthusiasm is hampered, wounded, broken and ultimately betrayed. The grumpy, and still cocky, Han of the classic trilogy is well informed by the events and interactions we see in "Solo". Also, I always found Han's return to assist Luke with the assault on the Death Star felt a touch forced, not entirely, just a touch. The climax of "Solo" reveals a generous streak in Han that makes his actions in the classic trilogy far more natural. I loved "Solo". I think it's actually the best of the films Disney has released for the franchise.

SxC97 Yeah. The Last Jedi I found a disappointment alongside The Force Awakens. Lucasfilm is out of touch in my view. But hey; if people like it, cool. I’ve just moved on. Marvel studios is my movie genre fix now and my Star Wars.

Same. I'm now more hyped for Marvel movies than Star Wars. And that is crazy. SW has been my favorite movie series for 30 years until this last phase of Marvel just blew it to bits.
@johnpeace69683 жыл бұрын
"...which is not what Star Wars is to me." This is the nostalgia mountain that every SW movie has to climb nowadays. Even when an entry is a good movie, it's given unfavorable or bad reviews, often bc it doesn't measure up to what people WANT it to be or REMEMBER the original trilogy as being. And it's not given the opportunity to stand on its own as a good or bad movie.

I'm probably stupid but can someone explain how she is talking to Darth maul at the end? How old does that make Han when he meets Luke if this is true?

So basically he is like a Star Lord with an Ape friend instead of a Tree guy in relationships with a daughter of main villain 🤔

I argue that maybe Han's "grumpiness" is a result of his cumulative experiences. Maybe he is too young in the film to have reached that level as of yet. I finally got around to watching it yesterday on Netflix. I had very low expectations and I was surprised at how much i enjoyed the film.
@Malwontae6 жыл бұрын
Yup, agreeing with most of this. I really would have loved to see Han's training and a bit more of his time in the Empire, it just felt so wasted to effectively get a "Three Years Later" in an origin story. That could have helped deepen the idea that he's a great pilot instead of the film just telling the audience and winking at the ones who know Han's history, as there wasn't really anything to emphasise that until the big spaceship action scene. Could also have done with a few more scenes from Qi'ra, even if it was just going to be a few flashbacks to what she had done for her employers near the end of the movie, but that's a bit of bias of just wanting more screentime for Emilia.

Stars Wars right now is like going to your favorite restaurant you've been going to for years and now it has new owners and your favorite burger has been tampered with. When you tell management you don't like what they did to the burger, they say "Well, I guess you're not a true fan of hamburgers."

I'll see SOLO again, and I'd see a sequel or spinoff if they offer one. Disney chose to put Solo up against the Avengers. Avengers got ALL the bigger screens in my area, so there I was with 10 other people in the entire theater on opening night, the first showing of Solo. 11 people total. If it flops, it's only because of the boycott and Disney's idiocy in forcing Solo to compete with Avengers.
