Fan Service is going back to Tatooine again, going to the same cantina, sitting in Han's booth.. that's annoying fan service. It's not fan service if it naturally serves the story. Makes perfect sense for Luke to show up to take Grogu away for training. That's just great story telling.

Exactly, there was a build up to it. Besides, it never took away from Grogu and Din's story. Notice how main focus of that scene is their point of view. I think fan service is bad when it either, does nothing for the story, or affects the story in a bad way. All of the fan service in this season was good because it was either very subtle(like the Crait Dragon) or it served a purpose in the story. Bad fan service is making Rey a Palpatine because it is a retcon and bad at the same time. Rey doesn’t even know who Palpatine is and her finding out she’s related to him means nothing
@Megaproductions3024 жыл бұрын
@@bussymaster13 well that’s not necessarily true. right! and at what point does it go from "fan service" to a natural part of the story? as much as each show stands on it's own, it's still building off the previous series.
@cutscenecinema99734 жыл бұрын
@@kerricaine I would say fan service is where a thing fans know and are aware of being placed into a story purely for said fans for no reason other than for the fans to go "Its ". There are important locations and characters which exist at this time which would be involved in major events. Luke is actively looking and training jedi at this point. It is therefore absolutely natural he would turn up after Gogru reached out into the Force. Ahsoka is one of the few active force users. It would be more disservice to canon to introduce a completely new accomplished force user for this role. Does it please fans? Of course! Its not out of place or put into the story just for the "Its Luke / Ahsoka!". Fan service would be if one of the x-wing pilots happened to be Wedge Antilles, a character only fans of the movies and EU would really know because he has less than 20 seconds screen time over 9 movies (or something like that). There is absolutely no reason why an accomplished top ace pilot general would be flying in an x-wing patrol on the Outer Rim, ergo for him to be there would have to be a major plot point. And if we were talking "fan service" from an animé perspective, Ahsoka would have to stumble and give us a upskirt panty shot :P (joke)

@@DFTNSHEXGRM I disagree. Every scene of him taking it off set up the last one. First scene was him taking it off because he had to, either that or death. Second one was because it was a sacrifice, it showed that he cares more for Grogu than his creed. Third one was where he didn't have to do anything, unlike previous occasions, he wasn't forced into dillema. This time, he took off his helmet because he wanted to. The stab at Rey of "Talent is nothing without training" was the cherry on top. You know Hamill was giggling behing the mic.
@davidbeer50154 жыл бұрын
I honestly really hate this comparison. At least from where I stood, it’s *not* a dig at Rey, cause nowhere was it said she didn’t need training for refining. After TLJ, she does get training, and we see some results of that. Personally, all it did was confirm my thought line: that Rey would get outshone by Jedi with proper training in how to use the Force. There’s raw power, and then there’s refinement through training.
@Comintern19194 жыл бұрын
@@davidbeer5015 But the thing is by that point she already has shown to be way too strong. She beat Kylo at the end of the first Movie for crying out loud with no training at all. Even with the wound Kylo had that is just ridiculous. Also the training she is shown to have undergone in the last Movie is ridiculous as well. All the rocks? FLYING? Compare her training with that of Luke in the Originals. Nothing you wrote disproves what most are saying, Rey being a Mary Sue and way too strong. With and without training.
@davidbeer50154 жыл бұрын
@@Comintern1919 except the answer for her victory against Kylo is given reasons in the film. Snoke wanted her alive, and Kylo was both injured and unbalanced, and after she allowed herself to connect. Her strikes are still awkward though, since she’s better with the staff (JJ, you should’ve let her have a Staff or a Pike at some point in 9, not a single the whole time). When they both fight on pretty even terms in 9, we see the extent of his skill, as he has the upper hand the entire time until Leia intervenes. Lifting rocks ties into what Yoda said with the X-Wing. Size doesn’t matter, and one is mainly limited only by their mindset. What flying are you referring to? Or do you mean in the opening of TROS? In that case, The levitating was something that normally happened when Jedi meditated, at least as far as I remember it was common imagery.
@JoniHD994 жыл бұрын
I don't see how that line was a jab at Rey, nor do I see someone like Hamill thinking "haha this'll show them". I think Luke was talking about his own experience. He was strong in the force and had extraordinary talent, but his hastiness and lack of training was what made him lose to Vader in Episode V. Even Yoda warned him not to go.
@ghostmedic864 жыл бұрын
You're correct. They felt like jabs. Considering those lines both came from an actual trained Jedi, it seems to validate what many others have been saying and how Favreau feels about Rey. There's a lot of reaching being done when people say Rey actually had training or was influenced by Snoke, and that's how she beat Kylo. It was just plain poor story writing, period.

@nataliew.29654 жыл бұрын
definitely agree that if they're going to bring Luke back again, they need to re-cast him lol. the CGI was fine in the still shots, but every time he spoke or moved his head, it was suuuper obvious that it was a digital job and definitely took away from the scene for me. the body double who did all the hallway scenes and stunts (Max Lloyd Jones) would be perfect tbh; he's clearly got the fighting style down, and it wouldn't be that hard to do some movie magic with his makeup to get him a little closer to young Luke's appearance, cause my guess is Sebastian Stan is quite busy with Marvel stuff for the foreseeable future lol.

I think recasting him with Sebastian Stan for future Luke Skywalker stuff will be a better choice. He looks so much like young Mark Hamill, like he was destined to play that role. Faces change as we age so they better do it quickly before he doesn't look like young Mark anymore.

Considering this show made me ugly cry at the end gives it a lot of praise for how this season was made. At the core this season was about the father/son bond between Mando and Grogu and to have to be separated was heartbreaking. I don’t mind the Luke CGI face since both Moff Tarkin’s and Leia’s didn’t bother me either. Also fan service is fine as long as it’s used to benefit the story

People getting pissed about loved characters coming back in a way that actually makes sense and is actually fulfilling for the story and calling it "shameless fanservice" is at the same level of stupidity as people saying "I used to like X thing, but then it became mainstream, therefore now it is my duty to hate it because God forgive me if I ever like something that's popular and appealing for a lot of people".

@@dogsbreakfast4952 it'd make sense that other jedi would show up, since we know there are a few (very few) survivors from the order 66, but Luke was THE option. The moment that one single X wing showed up my mind went "That's gotta be Luke Skywalker". It makes sense. It makes sense that Ashoka would be in Coruscant offering some resistance to the tirans, it is plausible that Boba Fett had survived and completely credible that he would be looking for his armour. It would be shameless fanservice to pop Obi-wan Kenobi and say he "came back to life because the force has sided with his cause" or some shit like that.

Chris - more than earning it, fan service is totally fine as long as it makes sense to the story being told. Even if they established characters we care about, throwing in fan service that doesn't fit in with the story line would be crap. But here, having those characters show up made sense with what was going on. Of course it was Luke. He was training Jedi at the time, or starting to. He was also the most powerful Jedi. Why would Ezra or even Cal come into play--they are a part of another storyline and that would have been terrible fan service. Bo Katan was fine because her storyline intersecting with Mando's makes sense and would be entertaining; so is the appearance of Boba Fett and his interaction with Bo and Mando. Ahsoka coming into the picture makes sense due to Bo Katan and then having her point to an actual Jedi (which she at that point wasn't by her own wishes). Although S2 was filled with beloved characters, they were not out of place and played into the story quite well.
