When I take dehydrated food backpacking. At lunchtime I put water into my dinner pouch just enough to get that hydration started then I don’t have to wait so long or use so much hot water in the evening meal. Works great for me doesn’t add any weight. In the evening after dinner I add water to my breakfast so that in the morning my breakfast is hydrated I just have to heat and heat

Great video! Thoroughly enjoyed it! My husband and I winter camp in Canada, with temperatures down to -30 Celsius, but we have a hot tent and wood stove. But eating anything right before bed, preferably protein, makes your body produce heat to digest it. Also, get active right before jumping in the sleeping bag, like jumping jacks, that will increase your body’s warmth. And put boiling water in a nalgene or similar, put it in a sock and it makes a great hot water bottle! Sleeping comfortably makes all the difference in the world! Good luck with your mid-life challenge!

👍👍👍. Hello .. from a South African living in Switzerland .. Mid-life Crisis .. no fuss. Mine started when I hit my teens and now at 71, is still with me 😏. You seem to be pretty organised, so going forward into the wild shouldn't raise insurmountable obstacles. 'Practicing' close to home before going further afield .. excellent! I do mine (cooking gear and recipe stuff) on my 3rd floor flat balcony. Fortunately, I live on the edge of my little town and have a forest just less then 100m behind me. One tip .. if I may please? Don't use the Burner Screw-on Lid to put out the flame. It has a sealing gasket inside that will, as a result, get damaged .. and the they burner will leak fuel when stored (upside-down or similar). Rather use the 'Snuffer / Simmer Ring' that comes standard with the Trangia. Also .. when out Wild Camping .. alone, always, in case of anything unforseen, have a 'Plan B' for 'just in case'. Am looking forward to your future Adventures (and will have to check back on previous posts .. especially the dehydrating doodah's .. I have a lot to learn there). Take care .. be safe ..

I've never felt warm (comfortable) on an air mattress, not even in the house on the floor. I thought having insulation between me and the air mattress might work but I like my bed too much to go tent camping. I'm thinking my midlife crises was decking out the bus, lol.

Watching your video from Canada and I have the same mid-life bee in my bonnet lately! So glad I'm not the only one. I've been trying to convince my husband we need to get a camper but he's not keen so I've been thinking maybe I'd give solo tent camping a go. Today I got out the gear we have and it seemed to pique his interest in going now that we checked out the gear so I might have a partner to go with after all! If not, I'm going to be brave like you and give it a go starting with a provincial park a few miles from home.

Hi Jane. With regard to the sleeping pad and insulation I see a lot of people on KZbin putting insulation between the ground and the pad. While this is a good idea I believe it is better to have the insulation between you and pad. That way, less of your body heat is going into warming up the air in the sleep pad. I have a cheap inflatable sleep pad from Lidl, its a different construction to yours, it has tubes that run the length of the pad. On top of the pad I have an even cheaper foam sleeping mat from B&M. Used directly on the ground, this foam mat is really too thin at 6mm and not suitable to sleep on because it compresses too much (at £1 in the end of season sale I am not complaining though) but it is very light weight. I use this foam mat on top of my inflatable pad and I believe it improves the comfort of the inflatable pad and does a good job of insulating me as well. Because it is on top of the inflatable pad rather than on the ground it does not compress as much with my body weight. I am sure a better quality/thicker foam mat would be even better. Try your yoga mat both under your inflatable pad and on top of your inflatable pad and see which you think works the best, I would be interested to hear how you get on. All the best.

Cool ….. literally lol, exped down or synthetic mat, just sayin 😂 x a good nights kip is imperative in the wilderness, also a protein rich meal before bed will slow release calories to keep you warm in the night too x love it! Made me hunger for some solo camping too xx
@hedgecomber3 жыл бұрын
Ahh, thank you mista! I’ve got a couple of ways to boost the R value of the mat so will try it out again soon to make sure it’ll see me right on Dartmoor 😊 Interesting you say a protein meal before bed, is that for longevity of warmth through the night? I would have thought a carb heavy meal would have been preferable. Either way, I ate that curry several hours before sleep which I would change next time. Please share any other tips you have for me going out on my own 👌
