Make a care pack for your homeward journey. I always stuff a spare bag to leave in the boot with items such as an energy drink, chocolate and crisps. Also in there will be warm, comfortable clothes (dry socks, jogging bottoms etc) and a wash kit & towel on the off chance you can blag a shower at nearby campsite. It can make a pleasant difference to the drive home should the weather turn out crap!

Paul, I know this is a year late; but, your treeless hill provides beautiful views and a real test of tents and kit. I sure enjoy the commentary too. It’s nice when you kinda think out loud about your kit. It is entertaining and informative. Wish I could be there, with you. Maybe we could talk gear, enjoy your views, good eats and some warm tea. Thank you… from an old vet, retired in the US foothills of the Smoky Mountains. That was quite the blow! I think it might have been a good time to stay in the tent. Breaking down and popping smoke in that S#!T storm took courage…

Wow, the change in the weather 😳 I’m up in the Lakes for a small cycling tour end of April and hope the weather is a little more gentle on me! Should be as I’ll be camping at campsites at the lower levels, not getting battered on the tops! Great video, the quality of your films is so good Mr Messner, and I always enjoy seeing what you’ve brought along for supper. The dehydrated meal packets have their place but your meal ideas are so inspiring and better value for those of us watching the pennies. Thank you for sharing and taking us along 🙂👍🏻

you tould need storm pegs up there , stronger than tent pegs . made of strong lightweight plastic that you screw into the ground , if the ground is soft enough , backed up with tent pegs .

Had exactly the same wether experience last week in the Fairfield horseshoe. Glorious on day 1 and woke up to fog/wind and rain. 😂 Love the look of the northern lite 2. Clever use of poles and the space is brilliant for that pack weight.

I’ve used the microwave rice many times in the same way as you but after lugging a couple of packets around for 30 miles and not even eating them 2 weeks ago in the Cairngorms, I’m going to try adding dehydrated rice to my dinner. I’ve been using Huel dinners for a year now and they are cheaper and just as nutritious as the expensive freeze dried meals. I hope the dehydrated rice works out. Enjoyed the video!

Think the regular rice would be a good bet there. And can save some time and gas too. For anyone thinking of giving it a try, I add rice, add water (2x volume of reg rice or 1.5x for basmati, ya know.. the posh in hills touch), bring to boil, turn off and let it steep/rest (in a cozy/wrapped in a fleece) for 20 minutes. If its quite cold, maybe let it simmer for 10 minutes then 10 minutes rest - ymwv. (At home I do 8 minutes simmer, 8 minutes rest, release extra steam, and perfect rice every time). ATB

This tent is on my current short list along with its budget sibling, the Panacea, and the Abisko Lite 2. Yes big disparity in prices but I’ve got some overtime in so a bit of extra cash. Vern 1 was on the list but the recent pole breakages are putting me off at the moment.

comparing the Northern Lite to the Panacea does the NL being Silylon I suppose it packs down a lot less when you remove the poles from the pack. I value the reduced volume of silnylon tents over strict weight

I thought I was the only one who ate rice and mackerel together like this. My wife hates it 😂 try adding a bit of Nandos or any other peri peri sauce into it, I normally add it to the tomato one. Great with a garlic and herb pitta too. Great watch also ❤

I really liked the Optimus crux lite build quality but one major flaw let it down. The imprecise simmer control that had a mind of it's own. Unless constantly monitored and adjusted this would turn the flame down and off altogether. I should have paid attention to the reviews that indicated this as a common problem.

You 100% on the rain coming in Paul? I've just sent mine back as water was coming in where the Trekking pole fits. Also feel that they could have put a rain gutter on the flap that covers the zip. I opened the door after the rain stopped and all the water ran down the tent onto the groundsheet and into the inner. Like the weight to space ratio but not impressed really. Hoping I've just had a one off dud and the replacement is fine.

This might be a silly question..though I'll ask it anyway. Where do you go to the toilet up there? I've always wondered this. As I'm used to camping/hiking in Australia. Surely its not a case of just digging a hole like it is here. Seems very exposed and a lot more used than the bush here. Asking for a friend.

Walking with the weight of a backpack, is going to put stress on your joints, fact. And as you've said, your a chubby guy which adds to this. Not having a go as I'm indifferent to how people live their lives. Just saying that if people do this on a regular basis, you can expect problems later in life.
