Solo Hike to the Summit of Tuva in Lofoten, Norway

On one of the last days before the sun disappears from the horizon I hike alone up to the summit of the mountain Tuva here in Lofoten. As I gradually gain altitude the sounds from the city starts to disappear. About halfway up the ground is covered in snow, and one can really notice the change in brightness. When I hike up the ridge towards the top the wind picks up and I put on a warm middle layer to compensate. I also put on micro spikes to get some extra traction on the snow and ice.
From the summit I have panoramic views of the fjord, Svolvær city and the surrounding mountains. It’s always fascinating to reach a new summit, especially now that I’ve hiked a lot in the nearby mountains and from this new summit I get an entirely new perspective and can see how the mountains I’ve visited previously are connected.
As the sun dips below the horizon for the last time this year I start my hike back down to Svolvær.
As with most of my silent hiking videos, this one is without talking and without music. Only the real nature sounds recorded on location.
Location: The mountain Tuva (477 meters above sea level) near Svolvær in Vågan Kommune in Lofoten, Norway

Takk! Ja, det uler litt når vinden blåser gjennom alle sprekkene i fjellet. Ikke alltid så lett å formidle at det er kaldt på kamera, men når vinden høres ut som det der så gjør det jobben enklere. 😄

I have the same headlamp.. great little thing that makes just enough light for my use. Well, here we are, i'm sitting in front of my computer again, drinking coffee and follow every step and cut til the end. The mountains up there are just stunning. There is something about wild nature and mountains that moves me in so many ways. On a hike like this, with this amount of filming, How much more time in general do you use? I know there is alot to take into consideration, but i'm used to hike alot, and know how much time I normally use, but if i will start filming it is nice to know how much extra time i need to consider using on a 1 hour hike. There is not alot of daylight so easy to loose track of time when you hiking and filming 🤣

Yes, I love that little headlamp! I have a much larger one, but I've found that this thing is enough most of the time. Well, cheers and thank you for the company! 😄 The mountains up here really are a treat to the eye. They aren't that tall, but they are quite pointy. I can't remember if I've asked you, but have you been up in Lofoten before? That's a really good question. Even when I don't film my hikes I'm quite a slow hiker because I stop to take in the views or take photographs all the time. So I would say I hike twice as slow as a normal hiker when I just hike without filming, and when I do make a video I probably hike twice to five times as slow as normal/fast-ish hiker. Some people might do this exact hike in 1.5 hours, but I spent five hours from start to finish (and only shot video on the way up). It's a bit different if I'm on a longer hike and only shoot every hour or so, but I do tend to spend a lot more time when I film, and as you alluded to it's hard to estimate and plan a hike when I'm filming, so I actually don't plan much and instead just roll with it, which is easier when there's more light. Nowadays I do struggle a bit, but I fancy the challenge. 😄

@@KristianPletten Thank you for that answer mate. I tend to do the same... i often start out hiking for a goal to reach the top or a certain cabin... but after 30 minutes into the hike i'm taking pictures left and right 🤣 So i'm maybe a slow hiker myself. I just have to try and see then. But i guess i will use x3 times the time as normal just to be on the safe side. Yes, I have been to Loftoen a couple of times, but never a trip just for hiking. So I want to go back for so many reasons. I'm considering a motorhome or something similar so i can spend much more time up there and move around some. Maybe i just sell everything i own and move up there for a while 🔥

@@tshansen Haha, sounds familiar! When the light is right there is now way I can talk myself into packing down the camera and just hike. Then I'd rather hike in the dark, which I often end up doing. Are you finally doing some hiking videos yourself?! 😁 And yes, motorhome/campervans and so on is perfect for visiting this type of place. I was actually building a custom camper van, but never really got it done due to a job opportunity I accepted. Still pondering about doing something like that. Perhaps when there are kids involved!

@@KristianPletten Well, to be honest, i have done some hiking videos already, but they have never gone public. Not because i dont think they are good enough, more because i'm not sure how to mix the to different things in one channel. I still trying to find my own way of doing all this, until now it has been a learning process, now i know more of the basic so i can continue with more focus on the content and story telling. And most important, I will always follow the path i love the most 👏🏻 I have so many plans for my own camper van, you would not believe it. I just have to see where it all lands, but I really want a mobile home/office/edit room i can travel the world with.

Thanks, Arjan! It's probably one of the closest mountains to where I live, and it fairly easy now before there's lots of snow. It's popular to ski down in winter, but might be too steep for my liking. We'll see! And yes, micro spikes are handy in conditions like this. Can't trust them like crampons, but they easily add enough traction when it's not too steep.

@@KristianPletten yeah crampons are a complete different ball game. Have used those in Iceland on the glaciers. Really nice. Wouldn’t mind seeing a ski video! 😊
