as u said urself Chris, less alcohol... less problem. local people are peaceful. their grudge is not against tourists. pattanis are essentially malays. malays are mostly reserved, shy and likely will just watch u wandering aimlessly hahaha. but once u initiate contact and he/she has some english, he/she will be more than happy to entertain any query u have.

You should also visit Manila. They have regular crimes like robbery on main streets with people riding in tandem using motorbikes to corner victims coming from ATM kiosks.

Malay is the race. Malaysia is a country. Malaysian is the people of malaysia. There are malays in pattani and malaysia. But the malay in pattani are thais and malay in malaysia is malaysian. Many outsiders confuse this malay term.

@@farandbeyond The term ‘Malay’ refers to the race or ethnicity (fyi, ‘Malay’ is never to be used as a short form for Malaysia, but many foreigners still make this mistake), while the word ‘Malaysian’ refers to the nationality. For example, Pattani Malays are of Thai nationality. The Malays in Singapore are Singaporean. The Malays in Indonesia are Indonesian. The Malays in Brunei are Bruneian. And so on.

kelantan and pattani is one people,same kind of malay language/dialect ,of course after many years separate there will be differences with siamese(thailand) & english/standard malay (malaysia) influence. you can google "kelantan-pattani malay"
