Join me on my first snow camp of winter. On this camp I get up the mountain and find a nice secluded spot to pitch the tent next to a frozen tarn and prepare a really nice meal for myself. Although I got to camp in the snow, it pretty much rained the entire afternoon and night which really tested the abilities of the single wall tent that I brought with me. Many companies claim to make fabrics that are so breathable that they prevent condensation. However, I have yet to find a fabric that is not susceptible to condensation if the conditions are right. Although this polycotton fabric is incredibly breathable and much better than most fabrics I’ve used in single skin tents (Nortent is very upfront on their website that condensation can occur 👍). It’s still susceptible to condensation when the conditions are right (not much wind, rainy, cold, etc). And boy were the conditions perfect for condensation on this camp. I may have complained about this tent in the video a bit but this is just the reality of using a single wall shelter. I’m still really glad I got it and I think it will do incredibly well in windy conditions. However, I just need to be conscious of the conditions I am using it in so I don’t end up with too much moisture in the tent. But despite waking up to a very soggy tent, I still really enjoyed listening to the rain all night and getting to camp on the snow. Really looking forward to future winter camps this season. Hope you enjoy the video!

Great quote from Aristotle to start the video 🧐. And as always top quality content 👌. Like many others i was kinda curious about that nortent seeing it on two other channels, But your video comfirmed my thoughts about the tent. The material reminds me of the tents I used during my army cadet days. Sometimes (quite often) condensation is mistaken for leakage. Even though cotton fabrics and tents are breathable, condensation can still occur, especially in damp and cold surroundings with little air movement. This is due to a combination of factors such as air circulation, temperature differences, and humidity: Air circulation: Tents are typically equipped with vents to allow air circulation. This helps remove humid air from inside the tent and brings in cooler, fresh air from the outside. However, when the warmer, humid air encounters cooler surfaces, like the tent fabric at night, it can lead to condensation. Air circulation and breathable fabric helps to mitigate, but not always eliminate, this issue. Nevertheless, cotton tents reduce condensation significantly. Temperature difference: Nighttime temperatures can be significantly lower than daytime temperatures, especially in mountainous areas or under cold weather conditions. This temperature difference can cause the humidity inside the tent to condense on the inner surface of the tent fabric. This is especially true in particularly humid environments, such as near water or a marsh. Again. Breathable fabric helps to reduce the condensation. Air circulation: If the tent is placed in a sheltered or quiet environment, it may have less air circulation, increasing the chances of condensation. Stagnant air makes it harder to remove the accumulated moisture inside the tent. This physical principle applies to all materials, breathable or non-breathable. There will be situations where condensation occur, especially in environments where the air is stagnant (resulting in poor air circulation), damp, and cold. In such cases, condensation is unavoidable, driven by physical principles that are impossible to avoid. This holds true whether you are in a tent with breathable properties or a non-breathable one. Similarly, in a cold cabin with inadequate air circulation, these physical principles will lead to damp walls inside the cabin unless you ventilate or provide some form of heating. Breathable polycotton helps to reduce condensation considerably. But it is no magical wand that can bend the laws of nature. End users may however help further to avoid condensation by picking appropriate camping-grounds. Pitching the tent close to the water, stagnate airflow and low temperature. You will experience condensation as condensation is bound to physical principles mentioned above. So. Condensation is always a symbiosis between the design of the tent, the fabric, climate, surroundings and the knowledge from end-user. Sometimes (like in this environment)it is better to use a tent with double walls because of the high humidity and lack of air-circulation. The double walls( inner tent) does not prevent condensation. It simply keeps it out of the sleeping area. As long as the inner does not touch the outer walls.. 🙂

This is the information I was talking about in my description to the video 👍. Fantastic write up on the website by the way! I agree, with double wall tents, specifically the outer material which is not breathable, definitely do not prevent condensation they actually create more of it. Though, it’s lovely not having to worry about the conditions you’re pitching your tent, and if they will create condensation. As long as the tents ventilated (and those materials don’t touch), you should stay nice and comfortable, and dry, inside the inner tent. That’s just why I prefer double wall tents. However, in below freezing environments, I know a polycotton tent can actually prove to be much more comfortable and that’s one of the reasons why I got this tent! I would have said this was simply just condensation do to the perfect conditions for condensation, however, the amount of water which I did not even show on camera was so significant that it most likely was water also coming through and from the fabric (water that was absorbed by the material). Probably because the tent was not completely weathered yet. And that was my fault as I did not have time to weather it prior to use. Unlike droplets forming when small droplets collect on a non-breathable material. These droplets were forming in single spots and producing significant amounts of water. Again, not the tents fault because I did not have time to weather it properly. Not too big of a deal though, because my sleeping bag did not get wet. I definitely did not plan on taking this tent out in conditions that were perfect for condensation. But, it’s the UK, you never know what conditions you’re going to get. For instance, on this camp, I was supposed to receive 25 to 35 mph winds and there wasn’t supposed to be rain all night. I bet if I got at least the predicted wind, I would not have had to deal with any of these issues at all. Either way, it did receive some weathering on this camp and I’m looking forward to using it again. Just maybe in conditions that are more appropriate for a single skin tent. Appreciate the comment. If the images I saw are true, and you are making a double wall version of this tent. That could be something truly special and you will have a real competitor to the Hilleberg Soulo. If possible, can I suggest giving the option to have the tent seam sealed by the manufacturer for an additional cost (referring the the potential silnylon version). You guys have made a truly bomb proof shelter with some really great features. 🙌👍 I did not intend on giving the impression that this was not a good tent. As someone who doesn’t buy single skin tents. I got this tent because I believe it actually is the best option I have seen for a single wall shelter! And I’m a fan of PC! All the best

@@nortent5246 You guys really have a winner here with this design! Extremely aerodynamic and sturdy with some unique features. Like having the dual doors for instance is a big deal for me personally. I’ve actually selected which tent I was going to bring on a trip based on which side the door will be facing with the predicted wind direction so I can have the better view while blocking the wind 😄. So having the option to open and close either side is huge! I’m still a big fan of the PC fabric in the vern 1 and know how it can perform when the condition are not a perfect storm for condensation like they were on this camp. Hopefully when I roll the dice next time with the UK weather things are a bit more in my favor. I don’t think I’ve ever had a completely windless night with cold temperatures and rain like I experienced on this camp. Wasn’t ideal, but a night out camping is always a good night out. I definitely think having the option to get this Vern 1 design with a double wall in nylon will be very popular here in the UK when we are practically camping on or next to a bog half the time 😅. Really appreciate the innovated designs you guys are producing over there 👍. All the best

Ok so I really like the tent and I’m sorry you had trouble with the tent leaking when you touch it , I had the solution to the problem of a leaky tent, such as that one made out of that material. I had a tent like this once before and to solve the leaking issue you get some silicone spray and you spray the outside of the tent you have to apply the silicone 2 to 3 layers of sprayand let it dry completely before going out on any trip in the rain. Trust me that did solve the problem and I had no leaking of that tent afterwards.
@GoingSoloOutdoors

The tent is waterproof, the actual problem was primarily the condensation 👍. Unfortunately that is just the downside of using a single wall polycotton fabric tent. It’s actually better to use products like Nickwax rather than silicon to help maintain the breathability of the fabric. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment. All the best.

Thanks man! I was really happy I was able to find some snow up top. I definitely wasn’t expecting it to be such a still night with so much rain. (damn mountain forecast) I probably would not have brought this tent in those conditions considering it had yet to be weathered, but it should be waterproof on my next camp with it. Even so, condensation is still always a possibility with a single skin shelter. Even one with the benefits of polycotton. Especially here in the UK. I have seen one picture of the Silnylon version! (I’m assuming it’s also double walled). That could be perfect for the UK. It’s just nice not to have to worry about pitching your tent in condition ripe for condensation. And with this design, I can see it probably being a real competitor to the Soulo. Provided it is stable as wind stable as this. Curious what the price will be and if it will come seam sealed. That was my only issue with their other Vern models. Seam sealing is easy but it’s just a pet peeve of mine when you’re not at least given the option to have it done before purchase. Appreciate you watching! ATB

Definitely not ideal. This fabric is great when the conditions are not perfect for condensation or when there is a bit of a breeze. I’m a big fan of polycotton as I say in the video (that’s why I purchased the tent) but unfortunately a tent made of this material still must obey the same laws of physics as tents made of other materials. It’s definitely more breathable than something like silnylon but as a single wall shelters you’re just more likely to come in contact with condensation than you would a double walled tent. The conditions for condensation on this trip just happened to be extra terrible. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. All the best

Yes originally from the states. We moved here around 4 years ago. I’d say the biggest differences is the lack of concern now for wildlife. Not having to hang a bear bag or worry about rodents getting into my stuff is nice. However, the weather is much more of a constant concern here. Particularly the winds. I find I don’t use any of my American style inner pitch tents here. I typically will only use single pitch tents now. I will also often cook inside the vestibule now that I don’t have to worry about animals. Which is convenient with the weather. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time comment! ATB

I still really like this tent but I think a double wall shelter is just much more convenient as you don’t ever really need to worry about condensation getting your gear wet in the inner tent 👍. They actually recently release a double wall version of this tent that I’m planning on checking out at some point. It’s lighter and it should be better suited to the English weather. For obvious reasons you must make sure you are ventilating your tent very well. I have used it with a CO detector many times and it has never registered any carbon monoxide. I would also never leave it running for too long or unattended. There is a clear risk with having any sort of flame or gas device running in your tent. It’s a definite do at your own risk. I am extremely careful when using it and because I have never registered a carbon monoxide with this particular lantern I continue to use it on occasion. Hope that answers your question.

Thanks. It was a fun camp. Just happy I got to see a little snow. I won’t treat the out fabric until it has been tested again after weathering. It probably won’t need anything. The conditions I had on this camp were horrendous for condensation. If I take it below freezing or at least have wind in my next camp things should be fine 👍. Appreciate the comment buddy! Nice cool relaxing watch, I like your chilled approach to the elements. Tents can be hit and miss until you find "the one" a bit like women really 😜but that condensation is really annoying, best for me is having a high level vent with inner skin, I think I found my ideal keeper, she`s called Big Agnes😝Cin cin

Thanks! Part of the fun camping for me is just dealing with whatever conditions I’m dealt so I try not to worry too much. It’s always fun regardless, rain or shine. Double wall tents are normally my preference, especially when conditions are perfect for condensation like they were on this camp. However, I think this tent will be fantastic in the wind or below freezing. I still have a BA Copper Spur HV UL 2 that I used when I lived state side. Great tent, but I don’t usually take it out here in the UK because I need something that can handle the extreme winds we can often get here. Appreciate the comment! ATB

👍😀 I’m curious to see what the silnylon version will look like and what it will be called since they already use the name for the other Vern 1 tent with a different design. I only saw one small picture of it from the last outdoor expo. I definitely didn’t expect it to be heavier even with the inner tent. That might be a dealbreaker for me though. I’m still happy with the PC version. I just need to be more cautious of the conditions I’m pitching it in to prevent as much condensation as possible. Thanks for commenting. You know me by now I much prefer forest camping since I always cherish a good campfire. But, I hung around to see what the Master Chef was cooking up. Great meal. Now I'm hungry. Question. Have you ever looked into the Fire Maple sunflower combination stove and heater for backpacking? Seems like might be good option for heat in the cold although it works off propane cannister. Not sure how they work in the cold. Enjoyed the video as akways. Safe travels.

From what I’ve seen in other videos it doesn’t look like it provided great heat for cooking either. I tend to just stick with what I know works for me personally but I am seeing more and more fire maple products being used online so I may try something of theirs at some point 👍

Thank you for your videos sir. I like your outfit btw, you look like a gentleman-tourist, i'd say. Also i'd like to appreciate the aesthetics of your field cooking. Talking about your lightern: 1. Please remember that burning it burns the oxygen, so please mind the ventillation and your feelings, u can black out without any idea on what's gonna happen. 2. Burning propane-butane mix leads to more condensation, cause burning reaction for propane is 2C3H8+5O2=3CO2+4H2O and for butane 2С4H10+9O2=4CO2+10H2O. As you can see u get lots of water, that then condensates on walls of your tent. Love your videos!
@GoingSoloOutdoors
@GoingSoloOutdoors 3 ай бұрын
Happy you enjoyed the video! I appreciate your concern with the lantern but you have to remember this is not a completely sealed environment. There are vents on both sides of the tent and air is constantly coming underneath the vestibule as well, so the amount of oxygen being used in the combustion reaction isn’t much of a concern when not burning the lantern for extended periods of time. As for the combustion reaction creating water, it absolutely does 👍 but it’s negligible when you compare it to the amount of moisture a human is releasing into the air inside the tent just by breathing. It may seem counterintuitive, but although the gas lantern will not reduce the relative humity in the tent as much as just opening the vestibule, it can help to actually move moisture out of the tent because of the temperature differential that it creates. Especially with a material like polycotton which is breathable. And in practice it works really well. You can sometimes even see the water that’s been absorbed by the fabric evaporating from the material on the outside of the tent once the lantern has time to actually warm the inside of the tent. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! (side note: the 2 is not needed in front of the propane in the first reaction and the butane reaction is 2C4H10 +13O2 -> 8 CO2 + 10 H2O so the equations are correctly balanced 👍 … sorry it’s the chemistry teacher in me) ATB

Nice video. It's a pity about the condensation. I hope you do another video with the tent when it's weathered properly to see how it copes in similar circumstances. I'd also like to see how it copes in proper wind and rain because the design looks like it would do really well in wind and rain, which is what I get a lot of in my country (more than the UK). I like that one most because of the vestibules. Beautiful place. At least you didn't fall in the creek. Get you a small hand hatchet to cut that ice. Hand better now? Good vid. Thanks for watching another video. This tent is a bit heavy but I was able to maintain the same weight by bringing a lighter pack and cook kit. Definitely didn’t want to bring a hatchet or anything due to the weight. I’m going to just weather the tent for now, and it should be fine. These conditions were just horrendous for any tent, even polycotton. Overtime with polycotton fabrics the DWR coating on the outside can slowly wear off though so it may require Nikwax in the future. Which is specifically made for polycotton, and still allows it to breathe 👍. But I shouldn’t need that anytime soon. My sleeping bag, fortunately did not get wet on the this trip as I was far enough from the wall. If I’m ever in a situation where I’m concerned though, I usually just place my waterproof coat over the base of my sleeping bag. My hand is doing well now Thanks for asking! @GoingSoloOutdoors
@GoingSoloOutdoors 8 ай бұрын
I haven’t had it in out for a multiday hike yet. And given that it weights 3.5kg I probably would pick a lighter tent for that kind of trip. It does dry very quickly though. When I got home and set it up to dry I put a fan on it and it was dry in only around 10 minutes which was very impressive. I imagine with a bit of wind condensation wouldn’t be an issue. Or if you have time in the morning at camp to just leaving the doors open it could help to dry it quickly. Not being able to remove and store a dry inner tent is definitely a downside to a single skin tent. Appreciate the comment.

It’s also really nice to have a place where I can look back on my camps when the memory of them begins to fade. Actually, I’d say it’s a great single wall tent. You just have to have reasonable expectations for this type of tent and be a bit more cautious of the conditions you are using it in. With my double wall tents I just don’t normally think about condensation because the inner protects me from it. This tent breathes much better than most single wall shelters I’ve used and is incredibly sturdy in the wind. I just didn’t plan on having no wind and rain all night 😅. It was the exact opposite of the predicted conditions. But that’s how it is sometimes. If I had the forecast winds, I don’t think I would have experienced the same amount of condensation as I did. I will be back out with this tent in conditions that are a bit more appropriate for it … hopefully 🤞. Really appreciate you watching and for the continued support!

Appreciate the comment. Hope you have a nice weekend 👍

I use single skin tents, just not usually in the mountains. The conditions I faced were a perfect storm for condensation. I still think this is an incredibly sturdy tent with some great features, but I definitely have to be a little more conscious of when and where I pitch it, because condensation can definitely occur like with any other single skin tent. However, I do think double wall tents are a bit more practical because you don’t really have to worry about condensation.

May I ask you a general question. You drive more than 4 hours with your car near your campsite. Then you hike for a while to the campsite, built up your equipment, you cook, you go to sleep and the next morning you do the same again, just backwards. Is all the effort worth it?
@GoingSoloOutdoors
@GoingSoloOutdoors 3 ай бұрын
Absolutely 👍😀. Depending on the season I get a 2-6 hr hike in which is fun. It’s nice to get away to such a beautiful area away from people as well. A 4hr drive isn’t ideal but definitely worth it to come here. And if I’m not up for the drive I have places locally I can camp as well 👍

@GoingSoloOutdoors I'm sorry to mither you over this but I am ordering it now and there are multiple versions 😅 the regular is for 6ft people which I am. The L is for 6ft4. I was wondering if the regular is a tight fit or lose or stretchy? Or should I get the L for more room which might be too big and drafty maybe.
@GoingSoloOutdoors
@GoingSoloOutdoors 9 ай бұрын
@@ysonline I’m 5’10’’ and have the regular. It’s a relatively snug fit which is good if warmth is your main priority. If you are 6ft it might be better to go larger. What temperatures are you planning to use the bag in? The comfort rating I believe is 25F. I am a warm sleeper so this has been fine for me.

Dreadful conditions for condensation in any tent. Do you feel the tent will improve with use? Have Nortent given any feedback?
@GoingSoloOutdoors
@GoingSoloOutdoors 9 ай бұрын
Definitely the worst possible conditions for condensation! I absolutely think it will improve. If I would have had the predicted wind or if it didn’t rain all night, I doubt I would have had any issues. No need for feedback really. The tent had yet to be weathered and the conditions were terrible for condensation. Norton actually has a fantastic disclaimer about condensation on their site. Even though I believe this is probably the best possible fabric for a single skin tent in terms of breathability, no fabric is magic. I will just have to be a little bit conscious and careful when choosing the conditions to use this tent to avoid condensation 👍. But it’s incredibly sturdy and a beautiful tent! thanks for taking the time to comment!

Lovely video Todd. We enjoy similar weather in the south island of Australia. A suggestion: in my experience, you’ll be warmer if you use your foam pad to insulate your inflatable pad from the cold ground. Also, tent might be OK for a single night in the rain. I imagine it would be sodden inside after multiple nights of rain - where over time it would be wet on the second night onwards. Anyway, lovely video. Cheers
@GoingSoloOutdoors

Thanks! Interesting about the pad. I discuss it in one of my other winter camping videos in the snow. In my experience (with this particular combination) I’ve actually found the exact opposite. It is noticeably warmer when I place the foam pad on top of the air pad. But with my new winter pad I don’t actually even need a foam pad for anything but a backup. I really enjoy the design of this tent and the fabric however I find my other double wall tents to be far superior. Especially for multiple night camps. Really appreciate you watching the video. Hope you’re having a great week. ATB

Thanks for your thoughtful response: i’ll check through the videos for the discussion of closed cell foam (ccf) pad on the bottom versus on top. I’ll also redo the top versus bottom ccf, or like you i could just use my new high r value inflatable pad. 😊 I’ll redo the test (last done years ago) to find what works best for this new combination of pads. Thanks for helping me rethink what had become blind habit, without new thought. Lovely to learn and rethink old - probably obsolete ideas.
@GoingSoloOutdoors
@GoingSoloOutdoors Ай бұрын
@@redphenix1033 I also find this older Nemo pad is susceptible to cold temps from the edges of the pad versus the newer Nemo pads. This probably also influences why I need to place the closed cell foam pad on top.

Another great film Todd. The tent reminded me of my Boy Scout days when we were told not to touch the material because it will cause it to leak. You might find it shrinks a bit and becomes more water resistant or perhaps a spray treatment will help. I’m surprised Paul Messner hasn’t experienced it too and mentioned it. Great design though. You’ve given me some more meal ideas for home 😂. I hope you have a nice Christmas if we don’t see you again before. Best wishes, Jiffy 👍🏻
@GoingSoloOutdoors
@GoingSoloOutdoors 9 ай бұрын
Thanks Jiffy! I unfortunately got the perfect storm of conditions for condensation on this trip. The forecast called for 25/35 mph winds. That would have helped but I didn’t get much wind at all unfortunately. I still really like the tent and the design. And after it’s weathered, I’m sure it’ll be 100% waterproof. But it will still definitely be prone to condensation like any other single wall shelter if the conditions are right. So I just need to be more conscious of when and where I pitch it, so it doesn’t get too damp inside 👍. Which can be difficult here in the UK 😅. All the best buddy!
