Good Question... It is very easy. If a substance A dissolves substance B, it is known as solvent. The substance B is dissolved in substance A; it is a solute. For example, water (50g) dissolve sugar (50g). So, water is a solvent and sugar is a solute. Similarly, petrol (1 litre) dissolve paints (1 litre). So, petrol is a solvent and paints is a solute.
