Solution to SBMM in Call of Duty? (How I'd Solve this Issue)

Skill Based Matchmaking in Call of Duty has been a really hot issue this year and while it appears to be having a positive impact on overall player retention, it also comes with many clear issues. Today I wanted to share my idea for how this issue could potentially be solved without alienating anyone and without harming player retention. What do you think of the system I proposed?

They should add a sistem that protect new player and leave the MM ramdom at the same time. For example when you reach level 10 if you are bad (less than 1 kdr) you stay in the new player braket and if you are good you go to public MM. This repeted every 10 levels. In this way you help new/very bad players and let the rest of the community to have fun.

My solution is to play gamemodes that are easier to get more kills. Domination or hardpoint. Sometimes there ARE sweats, like all gamemode. But in these, at least you can get creative. TDM is either too slow or too sweat. If that doesnt work, i suggest telling him to practice on veteran bots until he's good enough to compete :/

MrJustyoutubing not sometimes, all the time***. SBMM isn’t something that’s inconsistent, if anything it’s VERY consistent, so you can feel the pressure in literally every game. Domination and Hardpoint are filled will all the sweats so bad suggestion. Also, you gotta remember that someone’s definition of “fun” in COD doesn’t always mean getting lots of kills. Maybe it’s just messing around with different guns and wacky setups and finding success with it in a casual manner.

He suggests a tiered playlist system where virtually nobody would use that first tier and that's for the best because he doesn't actually say how exactly he'd stop pubstompers (now including average players) going into that playlist. The middle tier is basically "I want it like how it used to be". Doesn't even bother addressng pubstoming other than "it's what made COD successful", which is a big statement he needs to back up. So no, not very good solutions, at all. If somebody wants to stomp, they can play against bots. Competitive only means something if you give it value. In CODs case it's often K/D ratios. If you don't care then what's the problem? So lets be honest, he cares.

When you get a 3 KD while leveling the uzi up, you then get put in a game with MP5 sweats that slide into a jumpshot into a dropshot, and your uzi can't even begin to compete. That is the problem with SBMM. You can't use anything outside the meta because you are punished by sweats that do use the meta.

The issue I have with SBMM is it pushes players away from playing with there friends. Ive played a decent amount of MW and one of my friends just got it due to lockdown and wanted to play with a few of us, he got absolutely destroyed, he was level 22 and everyone else in the lobby was above 125 he ended up just going to play on his own because he couldn’t compete with the players it was matching us with because the three of us have good KDs and good SPM, he literally bought the game to play with us, his friends and he can’t even do that because SBMM forces us into high skilled lobbies which he can’t compete in. SBMM needs to go, by all means have a boot camp mode where people can learn how to play.

Yep, same for me. My friends always tell me they got 40+ kill games in hardpoint, but when they play with me they can't even get 5/10 kills. They even tell me that they think these people can become pro because they can't even shoot back themselves, while they aren't even that good (Im always on top of the leaderboard). Now they don't want to play with me anymore because it ruins their k/d ratio.

SBMM is what the majority want. The success of fortnite which has it says all. COD had stalled in growth until modern warfare warzone. SBMM means all players have a chance of having good and bad games. And that is good for Activision as it means people are more likely to buy the full game. No one wants to play a game where they always get killed quickly and SBMM ensures that all players get the chance to have some good games. The old system just lead to a few good players competing over how many kills they could get in a game with the rest of us being cannon fodder

Ranked also gives a 1 Hout Penalty If you leave you cant play Ranked if you leave one and you get a 75% XP and Weapon XP Earing Decrease so for example if yoy get 10000 XP after winning a match if you left a Ranked match you would only get 2500

Reaction times and map knowledge contribute to this. The only changing variable is who you’re playing. And the who you’re playing variable shouldn’t conveniently cause you to do bad for five games after you’ve done well. Especially when this game disbands the lobby after every game and you face new players. That just shouldn’t happen and hasn’t happened before this game. It’s so easy to spot. Go back to any older cod and that just doesn’t happen.

I got the solution! You should reverse boost i do it all the time. But i dont have time to just sit there and keep dying so i found a solution. You need to buy a cronusmax wich is a device that can mod controllers, and on that device you need to install a reverse boost script. This will automaticly blow you up every 5 seconds and it will automaticly find a new game. This is the perfect solution for sbmm, you can just do whatever you want while reverse boosting and as soon as you hop on the game you wont run into any tryhards. The only downside is that a cronusmax costs about 50 dollars but you can use it for a lot more than just reverseboosting so it is tottaly worth it imo. I hope this helped some of you (:

I've been playing this cod past it's lifecycle compared to any other,even my personal former favorite mw3. Sbmm is why, because it's not nonstop sweat. If you sweat you get sweaty matches.if you play casually you get casual players.

I'm an above average console player (not amazing by any stretch of the imagination) and I consistently get high if not top score just from pushing the objectives hard and I routinely carry in objective based modes as a result. However I do this with a typically fairly low (around KDR 1.2) with the odd match where I just mop up, my score comes mostly from strategy and not from raw mlg twitch shooting skills. After I get a few matches in carrying I get dumped into lobbies with people who absolutely destroy me, even if we win and I do still get a high score I end up with like a .5 maybe even .25 kdr some games because I'm ranked in with people who are much much better than me when it comes to the gunplay aspect. This is super frustrating when it happens and even if I win it still feels like garbage. And I end up getting grouped up with a bunch of randoms vs clans all the time.

I’d love the idea of a playlist where stats aren’t tracked (ie war mode in ww2) to encourage objective play. I finished the Damascus grind and I hate that my KD dropped by 0.2 when trying to get riot shield kill streaks.

One of the reasons I loved War was the no tracking of deaths, i had fun trying out new guns and setups without worrying about K/D and stuff. Also it doesn’t directly hinder your team. (Like if you died a lot in a TDM match, you’d be directly responsible for a big portion of a loss)

My KD was like .86 when I started getting serious about Damascus. When I got it, my KD was 1.03. I'm a beast i know. But I had 2 to 4 dedicated classes I used, depending on the map or mode. It baffles me how people have such tunnel vision when playing. "I'm working on this gun and this gun only until it's gold." They can't say "Oh, Gun Runner. That'll be good for the shield. Oh shipment, I'll use the knife". And the entire time they're not running a launcher. So they get to the end and haven't touched any of these. Not saying you did. I just read a lot of things about how ones KD dropped but they didn't go about it in a KD friendly manner. Oh, and they used the M4, MPS, MP7, and 725 for 2-3 months, while grabbing every tank they could in GW. Then they decided to go for Damascus and can't understand why the KD drops.

Thank you for publically addressing this issue, and for considering the perspective of all skill levels. I would argue SBMM is actually more of an issue for average players than most people would think. I went over 10 years without playing video games, and this is my first experience with a FPS. So, I feel like it's fair to say I'm average at best. Yet I experience the same issues you mentioned when I have a brief stretch of decent matches. Suddenly, I'll find myself in a lobby with a bunch of people with twice my KD and I struggle to get just a few kills. I would love to be able to have a few relatively high kill games, but the current SBMM system restricts me from doing so. Also, the system discourages me from wanting to play with my friends who are skilled at the game, because their lobbies are so challenging I'm not able to have fun / improve. And playing with my friends is literally the reason I downloaded this game. Thanks again for addressing this issue. I hope IW hears your voice and the voices of others, and chooses to try to improve the experience for everyone.

One potential issue I thought of is bringing back a “Master Badge” icon of sorts from a league playlist back to public matches could be a problem. I feel like if people are joining a public lobby and they see that someone is a “Master” from league play, they might leave the lobby as they don’t want to get stomped on by the person.

Not necessarily. I'm an average player, but I love feeling like my performance means something. I find it to be more fun when I know there are really good players in my lobby, and trying to keep up or even win. MW2 FFA was probably the most exhilarating competitive gaming experience of all time in my opinion. It wasn't easy to get a win, but doing felt amazing.

You finally did it, earned me as a subscriber. That whole watermark idea for a easy mode playlist, amazing idea. Make it so it says it bright orange colours above your minimap, so its not covering anything important, make it also appear whenever you relead, underneath the "reloading" text have (Barracks Mode) or whatever the easy mode would be called briefly flash so they cant hide it with web cam placement.

I got the solution! You should reverse boost i do it all the time. But i dont have time to just sit there and keep dying so i found a solution. You need to buy a cronusmax wich is a device that can mod controllers, and on that device you need to install a reverse boost script. This will automaticly blow you up every 5 seconds and it will automaticly find a new game. This is the perfect solution for sbmm, you can just do whatever you want while reverse boosting and as soon as you hop on the game you wont run into any tryhards. The only downside is that a cronusmax costs about 50 dollars but you can use it for a lot more than just reverseboosting so it is tottaly worth it imo. I hope this helped some of you (:

For me the solution is simple. Bring back the boot camp playlist from bo2. Kd won’t be affected, and you earn xp with 1/2 the rate, teams with mixed bo2, and a variety of game modes so people know what they’re doing in other modes besides tdm. This is what i played all the time back in bo2 when I had around a .8 kd at the time. After playing t for sometime, I ended the bo2 life cycle with a 1.23 kd. I never understood why they never reimplemented this

One of my most favorite things to do is play video games with my boyfriend, and Modern Warfare being one of my most played games right now, we play it together a lot. But SBMM really harms my enjoyment of playing with him. I'm a fairly average skilled player, sometimes I can go a bit above average, and I'm fine with that. But my boyfriend is amazingly skilled. He amazing with his aim, his reaction time is great, and he's really good with proper timing. Whenever he's in at least a decent mood, he dominates most lobbies he's in, and he's not even a tryhard (in my opinion). But this means whenever we play together, we're matched against people much more skilled than me, even if they're still not as skilled as him. This just makes for a less enjoyable experience for me, and with me enjoying the gameplay less, he enjoys it less. This causes us to actually play the game LESS because we constantly need breaks from all the meta-chasing tryhards.

I see only one problem here: When you make a playlist as a sort of "training mode" and heavily discourage good players from this list in order to give newbies a better experience, I fear that new players might just not grasp any knowledge that they will need for the "normal" playlist. The same thing happened in League of Legends. The training bots are just... they are not preparing you at all.

Though you may be right, aces is undoubtedly one of the best solutions that have been put forth. I feel that there will obviously be some sort of transitioning going from training to pubs, and pubs to ranked, but that’s normal really when making play style changes. The training is really just for players to get the barebones of controls, proper movement, and finding a preferred loadout, like an extended tutorial.

SBMM really is making me dislike the game more everyday, what you said is so on point. The more nukes a drop the more difficult it is to drop one. I know people hate on the advanced movement cods, but one good thing they had was a high skill gap. If you were good, the game let you be REALLY good. If we are being honest, if they took the best from this game and the best from BO4 (not the operators lol) it would make one hella game. I like the BO4 ttk simply because it required reaction and consistent aiming (plus streaks were rewarding since it felt like you could survive a 2v1 gunfight and get quads if you played smart instead of camping) and camping was lowered due to a longer ttk. I've always loved black ops gun mechanics and gunfights. Give it MW's gunsmith. Take BO's camo progressions and add more. I liked manual healing, but it could honestly be either (just give me STIM PLS). Get MW variety ability with BO weapon balancing. I'd even be fine with operator equipment like in BO4 as long as operator weapon/main wasn't a thing (damn bow).

It seems like one type of player is saying all these things: "casual players should get good" "If I play good I get destroyed" "I should be reward for my skill by not playing against other skilled players because they destroy me" To me it seems like they are actually just average skilled players and think they are above average but in reality the random matchmaking of past made them think they were better than they are. They are still in denial about it. Maybe there should be a random placebo games where they secretly throw them in bot matches so that they can get lots of kills and feel like they are good again

interesting idea, you do have a point with people not knowing they are average. One counter point I see is that this would, inflate ego, and make reality that much harder. I'm a great player, 3.25 KD player, but I can't realistically use anything other than meta guns in 6v6 and 10v10 modes. This is unrelated to the video, but I have noticed a change to the oil can suppressors description. In previous gun guides you said that the oil can suppressor was supposed to increase the damage range, but actually decreased it. Now the description says it's supposed to decrease the damage range. So that means that the only benefit you get from this attachment is sound suppression, with a total of 4 downsides, which are the shorter damage range, ads penalty, aim walking steadiness, and the iron sights blockage. I don't see why this attachment exists, other than for making a goofy pistol class. I'm not sure if many people saw this, but if you did, I apologise for the useless comment.

The super casual playlist you described reminded me alot of the Squads mode in CoD: Ghosts. It was its own mode that used bots and allowed limited progression of your character by limiting the amount of XP gained and didn't allow for camo progression, etc. If they were to take that a little further, they could instead incorporate it into the regular MP as it's own casual playlist you mentioned, tweak it as you said with limited streak rewards, camos, deathstreaks, even a spawn shield like was added in CoD Mobile, etc. and mix in real players along with bots, I can see it being a decent solution for new, lower skill players or someone who just wants to relax and not deal with the hardcore "sweaty" playstyle of veteran players. If we're being honest though, I kind of think also CoD Mobile is really just that game that you described with the casual playlist. The casual player is probably just as likely to hop on CoD Mobile because it's meant to be that more laidback CoD game and is already F2P versus releasing a AAA version.

Anyone remember combat training in Black Ops 1? Bring that back and if people get to level 55 or whatever in that mode, it would then put people into normal matches. To me if you have played enough to get to level 55 in that mode, you should have a decent idea of how to play the game by that time. For Everyone else add SBMM to ranked play in the style of Black Ops 2, and then the normal matchmaking wouldn't have any and people would just be able to play against any skill level at any time.

Love the idea. Sometimes inhd a bad day, and all I want to do is sprint around and kill stuff when I get home. Ground war is our best option now for that casual experience, but you still gotta get sniped from some dude half a map away most of the time. I want some something fun sometimes. Not just competitive where I have to sweat just as much as the next guy or else get stomped

This video is perfect. Well thought out, explained clearly, and it offers a brilliant solution to the problem COD multiplayer currently faces. The one thing I would suggest, is that a badge may not be enough to motivate high skilled players to compete in ranked playlists. Ranked playlists should include exclusive rewards like character skins, weapon blueprints, stickers, charms, sprays, gestures etc. Kind of like how the Mk9 Bruen was available by completing a challenge in multiplayer, there should be stuff available for completing similar challenges but only in ranked playlists.
