Bribery is defined by Black's Law Dictionary as the offering, giving, receiving, or soliciting of any item of value to influence the actions of an official or other person in charge of a public or legal duty. I understand you not wanting to fund a police state through your taxes. There are a lot of ideas for prison and criminal justice reform out there however, which do not involve bribery. Scandinavian prisons that emphasize the recovery of humanity in inmates are a great idea, but having wealthy prisoners who would've committed the same amount of crimes as other inmates buy a less cruel experience is nothing but corrupt.
@Coolkc4566 жыл бұрын
Let's get this straight. All prisoners should get the same accommodations. Those accommodations should be: - Safe jails with uncorrupted guards and security. - Clean and sanitary beds, furniture, and cells. - Affordable and equal health care that even free citizens have access to. Just because you're in prison doesn't mean your health doesn't matter. No prisoners should get TVs. If they want to listen to music, CD players, tape players, CDs, and tapes should be allowed for borrowing similar to how some prisons have a library so prisoners may borrow books to read. TVs and computers are a luxury you should not have in prison. This is how I think it should be. They need to find another way to make revenue than showing that rich people get an easier time in prison and that being rich means you don't have to pay such a hard price as the poor. It also shows the public that the rich's health and safety are more important than anyone else in prison which should not be true.

@Skrooge Lantay TVs are a luxury, not everyone can afford one. They do not go crazy. There are these things called books that they can read - it's what people did before TVs existed. If you say can't live without a TV, you're spoiled and entitled and that state of mind probably helped get you into jail in the first place. CDs and tape recorders are also good and can be used to play audio books for prisoners who have a hard time reading. It's much more educational and less expensive than cable. On that note, I don't like that my taxes are being used to pay for TVs and cable for people who harm my community when some people who live paycheck to paycheck struggle to get a meal, let alone afford a TV for themselves.

@jameshalleluyah81336 жыл бұрын
I'm not against prisoners having the opportunity to pay for better safer living conditions. That is better than nothing at all. What I'm for is prison reform as it relates to state unsafe living conditions. If the state is going to throw me in a cage then the state has a moral obligation to separate my cage from others who would do me harm. The newer pod systems can and have been made into much safer living conditions for all inmates. Each inmate is kept in his own cell and access to other areas of the system are controlled. In the older and far more numerous correctional facilities inmates are forced into large open groups with almost no control at all. In short, I believe every inmate has the right to be made totally safe from the actions of other inmates.

I don't understand why they're complaining about how this is unfair to the poor. Upper class families earned their spot in society, whether the it was the current or past generation who did the work. If they have the money to live a comfortable life, why wouldn't they take advantage of it? Poorer families can always work their way up the pyramid. It may take a few generations, but every upper class family has ancestors who endured struggles of their own.

Yea I think the point is, if your being arrested you serve your sentence, you can't just pick/choose, and upgrade around your sentence. See if you have a a poor 21 year old who shop lifted, he would go to a prison, and he would have to hang around with gangsters to survive, and then he would end up with nothing left afterward but his prison buddies, so what does he do? Join a gang. Now a 21 year old with a rich family drink drives, and runs someone over, he then buys his 5* cell, he avoids the mean horrible stuff about prison, and carries on with his life afterward with Daddies back up plan. Wealth does not come before justice.

I think the larger question comes in why are jails privatized and not properly federally funded? It sounds as if the system caters to a demographic for profit, all the while negatively exposing that set demographic. Even while institutionalized there is no real way to reform but instead super imposes a return for a return profit to the set organization (private business). Other countries institutionalize and education an individual for the country and society, in America though it's a commodity.

That's not true for most prisons. While all prisons charge inmates something, usually for anemities. They all don't charge to actually stay in the prison. That's what taxes are for. And for the ones that do charge regular inmates to stay in prison, they have no way to make them pay if they can't afford it.😂 they can't send them to another prison or set them free.😂 Pay to stay generally refers to nickle and dimeing for whatever they can get away with. But basic necessities like food, water, electricity, health care, room and board still come from the tax payers. After all if the inmate can't pay you can't just kick them out of a regular prison or starve them.😂 8th amendment.
@awilliam16 жыл бұрын
This doesn't sound like corruption to me. Not everyone can get that level of safety. If people are willing to put up their own money to stay safe in jail, why not let them? Obviously tax dollars can't provide this level of protection for everyone. The one thing strange about all this is these guys are basically paying the guards who keep them locked up. That itself is a little weird to me.
@awilliam16 жыл бұрын
@Ma Boi Scotty The jail isn't profiting from imprisonment. These guys are in jail for the crimes they committed either way. The money that is given to the guards to keep them locked up doesn't make this slavery. It's simply a way to keep rich convicts safe on their own dime.

People don't understand that these nicer cells cost extra money, and regular jail is technically free. Also these nicer cells aren't hotels, they are just a step up and possibly separated from any violent offenders.

A lot of prisons in California are privately owned. More money, more money. It’s the California way.

What if your found innocent? Does the state have to refund the upgraded stay? Can they even afford that?

If the society this way earns $$$ for the prisoner instead of paying. I see no problem with it.

Jails are privately owned, and taxpayers are on the hook for every inmate to the tune of around $100/day. Then the taxpayer pays for the sheriffs department to run the jail. It’s a racket.

Works for me, they save tax payers 30,000+ a year and still serve their time in a pretty crappy environment. Sure, it's safer, but prison was never meant to be dangerous. It was meant to be a correctional institution to ensure they did not recidivise. Sadly, the general public got strong on crime and switched to a revenge system where it forced inmates to learn no life skills, link with other criminals, learn the craft of criminals, and leave prison worse than when they came in. Their suffering should come from time spent away from the free world and having to learn about their mistakes and fixing them in whatever way possible.

Private Prisons that are abusive to human dignity should be heftly fined to the point of shutting down so that there is a standard in the prison industry. If the private prison industry bottoms out let new people buy it and set a new standard, it isnt the government's responsibility to save the day for failed corporations.

I understand your opinion, but think about how all that money benefits the community. At least they aren’t given it for free, because then there would a be a big issue!

The only controversy is that the program doesn't create equality. If the rich's prison fees were also used to improve the prisons of the poor, this program would be more accepted; but, right now, it's just a way for the rich (or those who are willing to pay) to get better treatment and the poor (or those who can't pay) to feel even more marginalized. Lesson: politicians should make policies that won't be so controversial when publicized.

Ok but like 55k a year is a lot so in a way your either paying by staying in a normal jail and having to deal with the many problems associated with that or paying that in cash so just a 5 year sentence would cost a quarter million dollars that's alot when your making 50 cense an hour

Look at Nordic countries jail shouldn’t be a punishment should be re education to make criminals part of society and this is a good move. Nordic countries have heating big single rooms tv gardens taking a persons freedom is a real crime. People in the US lack the understanding that jail should be re education towards criminals punishing only makes things worse, spends revenue due to longer sentences because of the lack of the education. The US needs to understand society would work much better with educating criminals than punishing them this is a good move towards making prisons a better place to reflect and understand I don’t agree they should pay I think the state should do that but punishment is less effective than education

So if the smaller municipalities are getting such an increase in money from renting out their cells shouldn't that mean that there government allowance for their Department should decrease the same amount that the renting of cells brings in. Otherwise it's just a way to line the pockets of politicians
