I always also liked that Amanda in this film was the rare example of a 'popular girl' stereotype that was fucking human and not just some shallow superficial girl. Sure, she's pretty and popular, but that doesn't define her character. She's warm, has a moral compass, she grows to stand up for herself, and at the end of the film, you never feel 'sorry' that she didn't end up getting the guy, because what she really needed was to stand on her own 'two feet' all along and follow what she knew was right. The fact that's also friends with Duncan and Watts by the end as well is beyond adorable. It just goes to show you that even with either Duncan and Amanda, there's no excuse for high school movies having shitty one-dimensional stereotypes of 'bad boys' or 'popular girls,' when there's so much more that you can flesh out. Bravo, John Hughes, Bravo.

Can we all just agree that John Hughes' movies had the best soundtracks and just leave it at that?

this is what I need. I wished I had a crew or a few of my kindred comrades in my circle to back me up

I cried tears of joy and laughter when I saw this as teen. Pay off the moon. Now I have become a protectiveDuncan to my millennial friends, me being gen X.

John Hughes (RIP) had a great understanding of teen culture. Who else would have understood that Duncan, though he is a skinhead, is a skinhead of the more working class variety. In other movies at the time they were portrayed as racist monsters.

But he's not a skinhead. There's a certain clothing style and mentality that goes with it and Duncan doesn't match any of those. He's just a metalhead who happens to shave his head. It doesn't mean he's a skinhead.

He has a skinhead but he far far from a "skinhead" i mean look at how diverse his crew is!! Luv this dude

If John Hughes had a great understanding of teen culture, then that desperately contrived, steaming pile of crap known as the Breakfast Club would never have been made.

Rex Rowland umad?

Although he doesn't have the mentality of a skinhead, the closing credits actually does have him listed as "Skinhead." Strange, it should have just listed him as Duncan.

Since Keith ends up with Watts...it seems like it would've only been apropos for Amanda to hook up with Duncan. One big potential storyline that this movie missed out on.
