My dad is a major case fan. I believe it's all he's ever carried. May buy him a GEC. The only problem is, I just got him a new case a few years ago and he tends to use the same knife until it's done. He still uses his old one that he's had for 25+ years.

Grab a leather pocket slip for the GEC. KnivesShipFree sells two sizes, and they are nice. I use them for all my traditionals.

I'm liking the reviews I'm seeing of the Ganzo knives. I'm not a blade snob by any means, but normally I wouldnt take a second look at a sub$20 no name. I like that they give the poor man a chance at owning a quality "knock off" with similar mechanisms and etc. Think I may pull the trigger on the G720

Pretty much any locking knife is useful for self defense. If its one handed opening, assisted, or automatic its even better. That being said, the first ganzo is not ideal. You want something with a bladelenght of 3.5 inches or more, fast opening and a reliable lock. I would recommend something like a kershaw thermite. Be aware of local knife laws!

+FutureMarinecuv902 I have been collecting traditional folders for over 20 years and in my humble opinion Hen & Rooster (Germany) makes a very nice knife for the money. I can't recall a time I was ever disappointed with a H&R knife, I wish I could say the same for Case.

The Ganzo 747 is a nice auto. I have 2 other Ganzos whose screws are pos. One just turns without backing out, the other stripped easily trying to unscrew it. There's a reason they are so cheap, it's because they are cheap.

I know people hate this but case quality really is not that good, honestly. since the 80, you have had to hand pick your case just to get one that didn't have a massive gap in the back spring...actually, in my experience, rough rider makes a better knife. btw my experience is about 40 case knives from the 40s to know and about 15 rr.

I have had some issues with case knives mostly with the trapper line but my sway back jack was very good out of the box

+EdD5 i have to say my sway back jack is excellent as well! I've heard the factory produced, Tony Bose designs are reportedly really good. (Like the swayback jack, saddlehorn trapper ect). I'm not talking about the more expensive, 'semi customs' they do annually, though apparently they are better than GEC (3 to 4 times the price though, it's really basically a custom)

I havnt checked out the SBJ and i hear they are nice, I disagree about the TB collaborations being better than GEC though. They look nice at a distance, but when inspected they have all sorts of horrible asymmetries and such. I have handled quit a few of these, they are nice, but GEC is nicer.

Do you know a good knife WITHOUT a lock like the uk penknife from spyderco but bellow 40 dollars. I live in France so technically I can't EDC a knife at all but a non locking knife is tolerated, and the opening modes are all allowed like automatic or assisted opening. Fixed blades are a no no. You could try the Spyderco Byrd Tern. It's basically just a cheaper version of the UK Penknife, between $20 and $30 USD most places I've seen.

Thank you, yea I knew about this knife but it's 45 euros here on Amazon France! Oh Well I think I will buy it on the German Amazon since it's 28€. I've also seen some Chinese Sanrenmu knifes for pretty cheap price, those are slip joint with a thumb stud for one handed opening.

+Weta Damn, you could almost buy a Mini Grip here for that much... Well I hope you can find a knife that suits you without having to overpay too much for it. Those Sanrenmu and Enlan knives do look nice. Ganzo also makes one modeled after traditional slip joints, and I think it has 14C28N steel.
