Some "grim" facts about Santos' crash in Portugal: - He lost control because he had to swerve to avoid hitting a spectator that jumped onto the stage as he was going downhill at almost 200km/h. - Four people died in the accident, not three: three were killed on the spot (two of them were a mother and her 11 year old son) and one of the injured died the following day. - The next drivers that passed through the accident's location reported it to the marshalls at the end of the stage but the FIA people in charge only let the emergency services reach the accident's location to assist the injured spectators after the last car had completed the stage, despite the insistence of the drivers and the portuguese authorities to stop the stage immediately. - After they learned about what happened, all the major teams immediately refused to do the rest of the rally. Later that day, they held a meeting at the hotel where they were staying and signed a document demanding that the FIA took measures regarding the spectator's safety and the improvement of the cars' safety for the rest of the season or they would pull out of the championship. The FIA's president ignored the document and insisted that they had to complete the rally. They all packed up and left and the rally was finished only with some of the portuguese drivers. Money spoke louder, nothing changed and it took two more deaths just 2 months later to put an end to Group B.

I grew up watching this as a kid on TV, I never got to see live a GroupB race but did go to Group A in the 90s which took over from GroupB, later to become WRC , I initially hated the fact that GroupB was cut, but later grew to lover GroupA. It was pretty normal for mechanics working on groupB cars to spend more time removing fingers of spectators from there cars after stages and events. That's how insane these spectators were, they couldn't get enough! There was even a race off between the Lancia Delta S$ vs the current F1 Champs car in a drag, race the delta S4 won that drag race, its acceleration was insane! I maybe wrong but I think also there was a run off vs a fighter jet also, mem might get that one mixed up. Sad for the deaths that was insane, that rules and regulations weren't in place limit spectators, plus protect drivers! F1 had addressed many of those concerns in the late 70s, it should have been obvious, but I had no idea it was this loose as a kid, it was just specular and me and my Dad would sit down watch it on TV, it was awesome, nothing like it since, todays Rally I dont really follow, like many sports its not as accessible, I can watch it on RedBull TV, but its not like it was in the 80s when we would sit down in front of the TV me and my Dad together, him having a beer and chips and me with probably not beer, soda etc. Great times, never forget. It was a great era of motorsports, it really was, F1 was at its best as well. Honestly I don't think that's true. A higher weight limit would more likely have led to manufacturers using heavier or more parts, bigger turbos, more complicated gearboxes, 4WD systems etc. I think the biggest problem Group B had was the mentality towards safety in general. Manufacturers wanted to make the fastest or most powerful cars, the safest car wasn't going to win them races. What Group B really needed was mandatory driver safety equipment.

USA the land of the free, as long as nobody gets hurt, dies or can sue me. Europe, the country with the freedom to let a rally car kill you, to let a hooligan beat you to death or to crash a motorbike into a house at 150mph. I have no idea which is better. But I know one thing for sure: if these things weren't so dangerous, they wouldn't have this appeal and you would never have made a reaction video about it.

I'm a massive rally fan but I just can't watch F&F because of how unrealistic it is. Nothing gets close to watching a WRC car in full flight in nature and Group B was the pinnacle. I'm lucky to have seen Michelle Mouton and her Audi in Kenya.
