It might've been Walter Röhrl who said that when driving through those crowds in Portugal you could not think of them as people if you wanted to be fast. They were just trees and bushes to the drivers in order to go flat out.

I think I've seen elsewhere that she's decided to get into vintage meets these days (also bringing her co-driver from back then). Her hair's gray instead of black now, but so's mine. Some "grim" facts about Santos' crash in Portugal: - He lost control because he had to swerve to avoid hitting a spectator that jumped onto the stage as he was going downhill at almost 200km/h. - Four people died in the accident, not three: three were killed on the spot (two of them were a mother and her 11 year old son) and one of the injured died the following day. - The next drivers that passed through the accident's location reported it to the marshalls at the end of the stage but the FIA people in charge only let the emergency services reach the accident's location to assist the injured spectators after the last car had completed the stage, despite the insistence of the drivers and the portuguese authorities to stop the stage immediately. - After they learned about what happened, all the major teams immediately refused to do the rest of the rally. Later that day, they held a meeting at the hotel where they were staying and signed a document demanding that the FIA took measures regarding the spectator's safety and the improvement of the cars' safety for the rest of the season or they would pull out of the championship. The FIA's president ignored the document and insisted that they had to complete the rally. They all packed up and left and the rally was finished only with some of the portuguese drivers. Money spoke louder, nothing changed and it took two more deaths just 2 months later to put an end to Group B.

Group B was a ticking bomb at the time. As you noted the lax rules caused a lot of the issues. I remember reading about it back then since there was no real TV coverage broadcast in the US and the writers talked about how exciting it was but at the same time that something bad was bound to happen. The announcer in this video, Scott Mansell (no relation to F1 and IndyCar driver Nigel Mansell) is a racer himself and I highly recommend checking out his other videos on his channel Driver 61.

Dakar!! Two weeks racing in the desert! Bikes, quads, cars, big trucks! Originally it was the Paris-Dakar as those were the end-points. They had to move it away from western Sahara as there were kidnapping/death risks. It moved to South America for years and then just recently to Saudi. I was taught bike bike off-road riding by a guy who has completed it on two wheels ten times! Amazing scenery, wild racing, complex logistics.

I grew up watching this as a kid on TV, I never got to see live a GroupB race but did go to Group A in the 90s which took over from GroupB, later to become WRC , I initially hated the fact that GroupB was cut, but later grew to lover GroupA. It was pretty normal for mechanics working on groupB cars to spend more time removing fingers of spectators from there cars after stages and events. That's how insane these spectators were, they couldn't get enough! There was even a race off between the Lancia Delta S$ vs the current F1 Champs car in a drag, race the delta S4 won that drag race, its acceleration was insane! I maybe wrong but I think also there was a run off vs a fighter jet also, mem might get that one mixed up. Sad for the deaths that was insane, that rules and regulations weren't in place limit spectators, plus protect drivers! F1 had addressed many of those concerns in the late 70s, it should have been obvious, but I had no idea it was this loose as a kid, it was just specular and me and my Dad would sit down watch it on TV, it was awesome, nothing like it since, todays Rally I dont really follow, like many sports its not as accessible, I can watch it on RedBull TV, but its not like it was in the 80s when we would sit down in front of the TV me and my Dad together, him having a beer and chips and me with probably not beer, soda etc. Great times, never forget. It was a great era of motorsports, it really was, F1 was at its best as well. Great reaction, def dig deeper others have mentioned Superwoman Michelle Mouton, def worth checking her out as well, again no one like her since! 🤘

Honestly I don't think that's true. A higher weight limit would more likely have led to manufacturers using heavier or more parts, bigger turbos, more complicated gearboxes, 4WD systems etc. I think the biggest problem Group B had was the mentality towards safety in general. Manufacturers wanted to make the fastest or most powerful cars, the safest car wasn't going to win them races. What Group B really needed was mandatory driver safety equipment.

I know all about this one being a former dirt track racer. Give it up 40 yr ago when I got me some kids at 32. I was pretty good. Started at age 16. Had been run cars on home made track for 6 yr by then. Took third in my first race at Woodhull NY with the car a paid $100 for. Put the winnings right back into another car. Never won Many races and did not run enough to get any real points on the season but I never went from a race without some kind of winnings. After the kids I got 10g's for the car I was driving then. Never put any money into a car that I did not win but for that first 100 bucks.. If u ride with me today it will be a fun drive b/c I dont speed but I like to push a car through a turn.

Also, Group B was killed on the spot, that very day at Corsica. The then FIA president Jean Marie Balestre anounced a ban on Group B cars taking part in FIA sanctioned championships, and also killed Group B's meant successor; Group S. Group A was to be the new top category for the WRC, sporting cars much closer to an actual mass produced road car.

This part was BAD. Nor the "make the cars lighter even if you make it a death trap without security" who was literally criminal to do. But the mood? The thrill? The freaking SOUND of the motor and the earth shaking when they were coming? It was beautiful. Still there, one other rally, but much more chill. Though the A group remain great ❤

In addition, to give the minimum weight more emphasis, how dangerous that rule was ... the lancia weight only 890kg and had a maximum output around 490-500PS. This car is just absurd. Also there is a quote from a very famous german Rallye (still living) legend, Walter Röhrl. He once said only Rallye is real racing/driving, everything else is just memorizing. A good demonstration of the S4 is seen here, it is from a german show, and the passenger is the main host, who is normally babbling away like a waterfall. I have seen various reactions to this video and in many of them I keep hearing the statement "I would never do that or even just watch it, it's far too dangerous" the same with the "tourist trophy" or "ultra" "hooligan" videos. that shows the difference between Europeans and Americans. in the USA: I can't do that, it's too dangerous. + it's banned because someone could get hurt. in Europe: I don't do that, nothing can happen, it's boring if it's safe, if I don't risk getting hurt it has no appeal for me. + we'll see what happens and if it goes wrong we can always ban it, maybe, or maybe not. USA the land of the free, as long as nobody gets hurt, dies or can sue me. Europe, the country with the freedom to let a rally car kill you, to let a hooligan beat you to death or to crash a motorbike into a house at 150mph. I have no idea which is better. But I know one thing for sure: if these things weren't so dangerous, they wouldn't have this appeal and you would never have made a reaction video about it.

The audi quattros sound is very very recognisable! The problem of the Group B was the lack of care for controlling the masses of fans… and that the president of the governing body FIA at the time was a mafioso and only pro-f1… Group C (LeMans prototypes) was the same… They could have easily made it safer, instead they went back to stockcars basically

You should REALLY REALLY watch "The INSANITY that was Group B Rallying" it has most of the information this one has... But soooo much more...

As you said at the end of the video that todays rally cars are probably faster, that is not true. Thats why group B was so bonkers, those cars will still smoke modern sports cars being 40 years old !

I have a better suggestion which will give you an insight about that era. The video is titled the absolute insanity of group b.

Honestly if I was driving I really wouldn't be thinking about spectators it's thier choice to risk Thier life by stepping on the track what if spectators were allowed to do that on a formula one track? Nothing good that's for sure

I'm a massive rally fan but I just can't watch F&F because of how unrealistic it is. Nothing gets close to watching a WRC car in full flight in nature and Group B was the pinnacle. I'm lucky to have seen Michelle Mouton and her Audi in Kenya.
