You could use some of your leftover rebar and make a prop rod, that fits into drilled holes, so there's less chances of the door dropping onto heads/fingers.

IF you want to make the tractor a little bit more light, you could use 1" thick walled PVC and pant it so it doesn't go brittle! Just replace the 2 X 2s with the PVC. Anyway, just a thought. The one you built looks awesome and will work awesomely, so my mention is purely that a suggestion with no expectations you will use it. I tell my young adult children, I'm simply sharing information in the event you don't know about this, so you are aware of all your options. The choice of your options is 100% on you and up to you!!! Be free, Be Happy, Be Love, All of my Love, Big 'Ole Mama Bear Hugs and many, many blessings to you and yours and everyone in between, from now into infinity

Hi Ashley, I have a thought about how to improve the lift when wheeling the tractor. I used this for a wood lathe so you can imagine if it worked on a heavy weight it will be much easier on that light tractor. I made a metal bracket that had a hinge an also axle attached, one for each side. When the wheel is not needed it pivots to full closed position, such that the wheel is off the ground and out of the way. When locked down the tractor could be elevated a few inches, enough to clear tussocks of grass that i noticed in your mowing vid. These are Locked in either up or down by a locking pin. I can send a sketch to make it easier to understand. If not just look at workshop machine moving trolleys that bolt to the machine base and you may see the principle in those. Love your lifestyle and your work. What a great team you all are, great to watch and thanks for sharing.

A suggestion since you are doing another round of meat birds. You can easily make treats for Ocho by dehydrating thin slices of chicken, I use chicken breast and my dogs love them, but I also make their food at home so maybe I am odd. Love the 2.0 version. Great job.

More ideas:For quail living traditions homestead on utube has an easy build I like. Chicken tractor made out of pvc and chicken wire is easier to move. I can't remember what channel I got the idea from. For my brooder box I found a wooden dresser in the trash, used the drawers in my chicken coop, used hardware cloth/ wire on the bottom and where the drawers use to be, cut a rectangle out of the side and made a door. It's on its side and works great as a brooder box. I also use pack n play s (thrift store finds) as grow out pens for my chickens and rabbits until they are big enough to move outside. I have 1"x1" hardware cloth around the pack n play, so no critters get in or out. I have a lid out of pvc & hardware cloth easy to remove. They work great because when they aren't full, they can easily be stored away.

Doggie bath trick....Water down your Dog Shampoo and Conditioner ~50% with water. Then when you apply it just be more liberal. Makes getting it spread around on the dawg very easy. Does not cause the problem of getting the thick (undiluted) shampoo worked around. Speeds up the application and sudsing up and makes getting it all rinsed out super easy, too. We have a long haired Benji mutt and a small poodle. Nice upgrade on the chicken tractor. Have a great day!!!!

If you make the construction of the wheels different as to lever them it would even be easier. Something like hospital beds. Push or pull some lever so your chicken traktor gets of the ground.

If you use pinterest it's a program on you know basic program but it shows you a lot of chicken tractors and they've got to set a wheel so you put on the air with a board and you can tilt the wheels up-and-down up-and-down and if you put wire on the bottom of there they can still eat the grass and the bugs and everything and when you lift it up you can still take the chickens with you

We raised 50 meat chickens every year, and our coop for them had ski built under it so we could move it yearly but we had to put fence up w a netting on top but it was a small area 3 months and we proceeded them. We had to make sure Weasels didn't get in because they will suck the blood out of the chickens and kill them all. We learned that 1 year because we lost all of our chickens and pheasant. We raised pheasants every year to release.

Try a pole style fishing net to reach chickens when they are in a hard to reach situations like your old style coop. and I hope you are planning to reinforce your cage wire with outer wire and longer staples or nails. A predator can easily push in your wire away from the wood and gain access to them. I recently had a racoon tear my wire away from the fence pole, catch & eat one of my chickens! I enjoy seeing your progress!

Great improvement on your chicken tractor. Suggestion: Move the wheels behind the chicken tractor, so that they only come into play when you lift the front. Use right angled triangular plywood scraps (~1ft X 1ft) as gussets, screwed to 2" X 2" vertical scraps, with a 2 ft long axle, with the wheels in between for additional strength. Voila'. No more need to remove the wheels every time the tractor is moved, but it will be a little heavier because of leverage. Suggestion #2: To avoid the additional weight, mount the above on the side of the tractor and pull it sideways, instead. B-b-but, what was that large plastic box for that you were standing in at the beginning of the previous video? BR.

Hi you guys! We started following you a couple of weeks or so ago. We are very interested in permaculture, food forests, greening the desert. We live in the San Antonio area and would love to see west Texas greening up. Anyway, We were wondering how your chickens are doing with egg laying since there seems to be widespread difficulties with commercial feed and egg laying chickens. Have you seen a drop off. Many are reporting drastic reductions since about September. We love following along (we have been binge watching, but finally got caught up today), wishing each of you well.
