So right about those stupid bulb holders, both mine are now buried in a mound of Araldite! So nice to have someone else sharing the pain of Land Rover maintenence! All the best from cloudy Liverpool 'lad' 😉

They are a poor design as you cannot replace them - I have an idea in mind using LED's but too many projects at the moment

I have similar problems with my ex army 1986, 2.5n/a diesel. Speedo failed, fitted new bottom cable (2 piece on mine), still no joy. tested speedo, its ok, so have now bought 2 new cables to try again.

I have one of those little boards on mine, it's a low fuel light module defender they appear on some 200tdi

This is a 1987 so I was surprised to see one ( let alone working!)

@@BritannicaRestorations They were to stop the light flashing as it sloshed around the tank (when they used the low level sensor in the tank) Its a bit of a damping circuit. Which reminds me as i took my loom out today.. mine was coming on at 3/4 full! best investigate that!

You wouldn't use silicone spray lube in the speedo cable then Mike?

Nice video, I’m replacing my speedo cable , how can I get the speedo gear out of the transmission, I’m not sure if I need to do this but it’s apart so I’d thought I’d take a look. I’ve been trying with a screwdriver to work the housing out but it ain’t moving..

You may have to get serious and remove the rear transfer case speedo housing out and tap out the drive gear from the inside The bushing that holds the drive gear in can get corrosion between the aluminium and steel making it hard to extract, and as you may find out the housing is easily broken with pry bars and levers

Mike, great videos as always. You have become my default KZbin channel. I have a 1985 LR 90 2.5 NA Diesel Basic. I am curious if the "WD-40 Specialist Dirt & Dust Resistant Dry Lube PTFE Spray" on Amazon is a close enough alternative to your Llyods stuff for speedo cables. Lloyds appears hard to source in Tennessee. Thanks!

Mike, can you get your cad guy / machinist guy to make a light holder out of aluminum? Maybe add some cooling fins or fit an LED bulb?

Had a thrash in it today and got it over 120 - needle was flicker free so its Teflon for me!

With regards the melting bulb holders, is there not a LED replacement that doesn't get so hot? I must be missing something i know, or someone would have thought of it.

Whilst fitting LED replacements i came across the same melted holder problem. Tec7 them back on and LED bulbs work fine. Green bulb filters are a pain though

The problem is, the green lens and the white holder screw together either side of the metal gauge and as the black bezel is spun over, you cannot get into it If the lens breaks, then the holder usually is the next to fall off LED is a solution too late

I've never seen a Defender speedo go from 0 to 120kph in a split second! If the vehicle did that, could you imagine the parts left behind?!?!?

Stephen I had that 90 up to 120Km/hr today - no needle movement or flicker - thumbs up for the Teflon spray!

Pretty easy as the alternator should have a tach take off - but you need the right gauge to make it work
