@@veggsbacon1891here's a bold opinion: Shadow is a good game. Flawed, like melee weapons are useless, homing attack has an unintuitive threat area, and the plot suffers from the mission structure, and some missions are long in the tooth, but it's a good game besides. Once you learn the homing attack and how to control the movement and momentum you can get around with great fun. The guns are fun, lots of the missions are fun to do, the music is great and diverse and so are the locales despite it being mostly city/industrial cores, they branch out on the concept well. The characters are fun, the aesthetic is a unique take on 2000s grit, and whether intentionally or not, the dialogue is all cheesy enough that it has the effect of being entertaining. 10 year olds are stupid enough to start saying damn because their cartoon hedgehog said it, I know, I was 10 or 11 or something, but that's what a parent/guardian is for, they tell them to clean up their mouth. They can do all that while still knowing the script is hammy and laughing along with it.

Ironically Ninja Theory’s original pitch for the reboot was actually closer to the original series, but Capcom said it wasn’t western enough and pushed them to make the reboot we actually ended getting. Though I am glad that DmC is more accepted nowadays, to a degree that DMC5 actually contains references to DmC, such as Dante’s alt colors being reboot Dante’s colors.

A couple corrections to make about the beginning. 1. The original vision for DmC was actually a lot closer to mainline Devil May Cry, it was actually Capcom that pushed the reboot to be more and more its own thing, for better or for worse. 2. The Reboot wasn't actually because of poor sales for DMC 4, contrary to popular belief. As a matter of fact, DMC 4 was the highest selling game in the series until DMC 5. However, Capcom went through a phase of wanting to appeal more to a western audience, and they thought the best way to do that was by "Westernizing" their games. Ultimately, DMC felt too "Japanese" to them, so they threw everything away and tried starting over.

I think the reason why people prefer Dante and Vergil from the main series than here is because they fall under the type of puzzle piece scenario. What I mean by that is viewers are able to put together a scenario of their character progression from moments in the stories and see how goes along. Like yes we don't see this kind of brother interaction between Dante and Vergil like we do in this game, but people have been at least get a closer look through the dialogue they exchange in the last act of 3, Dante trying to get Yamato back in 4 and all the moments between the brothers in 5. They do care for each other, even if they don't say or show us the actual signs. Sometimes a viewer can tell what a character's dynamic can be by listening to all of the dialogue really closely.
@jennifergriel861
@jennifergriel861 Жыл бұрын
And that kind of storytelling just doesn’t work for some people which is why I prefer how DmC handles its story. I shouldn’t have to pull out my literary analysis skills to get things like the dynamics between the characters and the additional layers of their personalities. That stuff should be clear in the story.

@@carlosemilio5180 not just to understand the basic narrative of a hack and slash like DMC. People act like this series has such a deep narrative but if you only play the games (which is a perfectly reasonable thing to do) it’s not. I’m tired of people telling me that the series has so many layers if you read the mangas and listen to the audio dramas and that stuff is all there in the games if you just think more deeply about it and honestly I can’t help but think that people are just projecting any narrative complexity from the supplementary material and the spin-offs into the games when it’s just not there.

I honestly feel like Tameem’s view of what was cool then doesn’t apply today is true but his way of just added such tasteless and tacky thing to the reboot like adding the casual sex, drugs and other “cool” and edgy things. Many people that reboot or give their interpretation of classics always miss the mark on why the originals are charming. I remember the same thing happened with the gritty fan made power rangers short; people just add what they think is cool and mature and the end product just comes out looking too try-hard.

I'll never not find it hilarious how Saban looked at that Power Rangers fanfilm and used it for the basis of a reboot movie, only for it to fail miserably and never spoken of again. It shows how that game was a celebration of every aspect of the franchise, even the less popular parts.

Yeah, I felt about the same playing the series in order. I think it ranks 3rd for me with DM5 and 3 above it. My issues mostly are just on tone and story, more for it not being outright bad, but just trying too hard. Ironically I think my biggest example is not the usual suspects, but the scene of them at that park where all the graffiti is on the wall describing everything vergil is talking about for like 5 minutes straight, only for dante for sum the whole thing up in one sentence. There are nuggets here and there to make something work, more than I can say for the stories of 1 2 and 4, but it didn't quite come together. Now for the positives. Above all else, the level design and theming. Still the strongest in the entire series for me. I remember almost all the limbo environments and I actually want to look around for enjoy the environments this time thanks to this dante feeling like he can actually move through them properly and not "well he kind of can". And with the combat when you are fighting normal enemies I do think it has a fun albeit toned down usual dmc combat but still fun action game in its own right.I know that is still a major sticking point for some, that there isnt nearly as much combo depth…but…I can play the main campaign of DMC pretty fine and have done so a few times when I’m in the mood. Meanwhile I feel I always just give up on a 4 playthrough every time I try to do so. If I have more fun with one of them, that one wins for me. Its kind of that simple. And I appericiate definitive edition going out of its way to really fix a lot of the issues people had with the game and even make them a toggle so people could play how they like. It feels like a lot more effort went into this instead of the usual, put in vergil and call it a day approach with the others. I think in a post 5 world, its easier to see this as its own thing and judge it on its own merits. And I think its still worth it, I find myself going back to it more than 1 2 or 4. Now that being said, your gonna have with 5. Your gonna have A LOT of fun with 5.

I remember resenting the hell out of DmC as I thought this game would be the direction of the series moving forward and prior to 5 being announced, I personally thought the DMC series was just gone. Now with 5 being the finale to the Sons of Sparda story and 2 no longer being the endpoint of the series' timeline, I don't hate DmC as much. I still dislike the game's story, writing, characters (except for Bob Barbas obviously) and tone but the enviroment and level design were decent while the gameplay is fine. On its own, it would be a perfectly decent character action game if it were not using the Devil May Cry IP.

From the moment Johnny started this marathon, _this_ was the review I was waiting for, especially after hearing that he had little, if any, prior experience with the franchise prior to starting this marathon and, thus, didn't have decades of calcified fanboy nostalgia making it harder to see clearly. I was curious to see where he'd eventually come down it, since I figured he wouldn't just blindly follow the consensus At the time I played it, it was the _only_ DMC game I'd even played, as most of them weren't on PC (the only platform I own), and being a reboot, it seemed like as good a place to try to jump on as any... and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it. It didn't become an all-time favorite. I only played through it the one time, and haven't gone back to it since, unlike say Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, which I have revisited at least one or two times since my initial run. But at the same time, there was no point in that one run where I felt like I was forcing myself to keep playing or thinking about all of the better ways I could be spending my time. I enjoyed my time with the game from start to finish! Perhaps it's because I tend to spend more time with strategy and tactics games (XCOM & XCOM 2 are the most-played games in my Steam library for a reason), but I even appreciated the whole angel/devil mechanic. Sure it tripped me up, but it _also_ forced me to actually stop and _think_ about what I was doing... to _plan_ my attacks, rather than just mindlessly button-mashing my way to victory. It's the same reason I appreciate the combat in the Arkham games. Sure you _can_ simply button-mash your way through those games, but if you want to keep your combo going and truly feel like Batman, you need to be scanning the battlefield, picking out the most urgent target of the moment, and figuring out how you're going to deal with it. You need to be thinking at least two or three steps ahead or some punk will get a lucky shot in, breaking your chain. Once it clicks, it gets to be a bit like Holmes's fights in the RDJ movies. Was DMC a perfect game? Hell no! Obviously not... but I always felt the game got _WAAAAY_ more crap than it deserved simply because it wasn't the game fans wanted. As someone who didn't have any of that baggage, it was a perfectly enjoyable game. It wasn't even merely serviceable. It's a genuinely _good_ game... one of the _better_ examples in a genre that's incredibly easy to screw up. But it isn't the best, and it fell short of the masterpiece fans had built the franchise up to be, and so it was immediately relegated to the dustbin of history... rather unfairly, in my opinion. I'm glad to see that Johnny enjoyed his time with it, as well!

HARD disagree on the Mundus from the reboot being better villain than the original from the first Devil May Cry. While yes, there isn't much to original Mundus' character beyond being a malevolent god, I'd argue he isn't the sort of villain to whom that would have even been the point. As an antagonist he isn't so much a character as he is a force of nature with an intent, an overlooming threat, whose forboding presence permeates through the entire adventure (think to the effect of Sauron from Lord of the Rings), and as such Mundus from Devil May Cry 1 is remarkably effective; it's made clear by the in-game clues scattered throughout Mallet Island, that Mundus' underlying presence constantly hanging upon the game-world, making it all warped and ominous, is the very reason why the first game has more palpable gothic horror feel to it than any other game in the series and that further reflects in how the closer you get to Mundus, the more hazardous and creepy the game-world becomes. And so I'd almost argue them making him more of a character in the reboot is part of the reason why he no longer works in that game. Though the larger issue is the fact they gave him the character of an overly crass saturday morning cartoon villain, who talks big game about getting Dante soon at the start of the game, while throughout it all he manages to do is throw couple of impotent temper tantrums over his plans being foiled, until you face him as a sorry excuse of a climatic endgame bossfight, which makes the idea of him as this world-conquering villain we're supposed to take seriously nothing short of laughable.

Looking closely at DMC Dante's drawing in the thumbnail (good artstyle btw) I realize that the lines around him, apart from having a white color also have a little blue on the left and a little red on the right. I think that's a reference to the fact that 'Donte' is a half angel, half demon hybrid and he uses light and dark weapons. Props to the artist.

I think dante in the original series had more development albeit more games. In 3 he wasnt really happy with what he was and was very guarded just masking it with jokes until he saw what lady has been going through and losing vergil at the end. Hes accepted yeah hes human and not just some monster. In dmc 1 after going through all his battles and confusion with triss he accepts his demon half. Dmc 2 we dont talk about, but dmc4 hes in a nice mentor role for nero but still messing with him as afterall hes dante hes rarely serious. Now dmc 5 that ups the characters tremendously for all the main cast and id say is the best game in the series. El donte hes too try hard for my liking and with what theyre trying to message its a bit hypocritical to be doing the samething in real life that your in game demons do. But the combat was fun not as good as 5 or 3 but still entertaining enough.

14:14 There's 3 comics that serve as a prequel of the game which tell the story of how Vergil and Kat meet, in this story it is stated that he was basically fighting against the world alone, using his Devil Trigger corrupted him so much to the point he said that if he used it just one more time he would lose his humanity. Vergil sent Kat to find Dante also as a sort of contingency plan in case he actually did. In the end, Dante defeated Vergil but was too late to save him, even the song that plays during the final battle says "for their eyes, kill me, spare me".

I love this game it’s glad to see someone who while still critical was completely fair to this game. And it’s just nice to see another fan of it alongside the original series. I love that Dante feels very balanced in several ways, a mix of Dante and Nero, light/ heavy weapons, and horizontal mobility. These things make him my favorite playable character. And I think Ninja Theory’s story and visual design are overlooked. This game did well improving some problems with the older games like tedious back and forth, rushed campaigns, and bad camera/ platforming. It’s a good combat game as always, but it’s a good game outside of that as well. And I really like that. Enjoy playing through 5

Respect to Johnny for actually doing research into why a good chunk of the fandom write this game off and not just brushing off the reasons why. @@siberian4097 You're joking right? The Sonic community more reasonable than the DMC community? You're either trolling or haven't witnessed how stupid the Sonic fandom can get. Especially since the reaction from DMC fans was completely justified ultimately when the series was going to be replaced by a game that discards the identity of the series in an attempt to pander to an audience who didn't like DMC in the first place. Sonic fans on the other hand freaked out about Sonic Boom replacing the main series despite it being established that it would not, complained about the length of Sonic's quills or started flame wars with other fandom's over a Game Awards Poll. And look, DmC is not the train wreck that the fandom wished it would be and it's fine to like it however claiming the naysayers are mentally incapable for not giving the game chance because you like it is shitty. It's one thing to judge a piece of media by its own merits but if this bold new direction is going to replace what came before and become the standard going forward, it should be compared to what came before and the reboot clearly didn't convince any of the original players at the time. And these same people have no reason to give it a fair go now. It's been a decade since it came out and why revisit a game from back then when newer stuff is coming out? Let alone if you even have the time to play as many games 10 years later.

@truefenriz
@truefenriz Жыл бұрын
@@souljagod420 In 5, Vergil was weaker than Dante before he split himself in two. Vergil was dying after all and only upon eating the Qliphoth fruit, did Vergil gain power that matched Dante's power. Also, seeing as Vergil was turned into Nelo Angelo in 1 and was supposed to be dead in 2 and 4 compared to Dante who was actively fighting demons post-DMC 3 and growing stronger (shown by how easily he handles demons in 2 and 4 as compared to 3 and 1), Dante already was the stronger twin by then. Also, I think you are misunderstanding the story of 3. Prior to 3, we see that Vergil is definitely stronger than Dante because while Vergil accepted his demonic heritage, Dante refused to accept it which made him the weaker twin. 3 is Dante's journey in accepting his demonic heritage and his role as a protector of the Human World in which he grows stronger throughout his various battles in 3 while holding onto his humanity whereas Vergil does not grow. Vergil stayed the same in terms of power (he only picked up two new Devil Arms vs Dante's larger variety which he got by defeating various demons) which led to Dante overcoming Vergil by becoming the stronger twin at the end. You can see this by how Dante lost the first fight, fought to a standstill in the second and finally, won the third fight. So, it isn't a plothole that Dante became the stronger twin while starting out as the weaker twin. Chronologically, it makes sense following the established timeline of 3, 1, 2, 4 and 5.

Aesthetically, I liked that this game went for a more punk rock-ish look. I thought it worked well as an alternate "origin" to OG Dante, who is _very_ "90's thrash metal" (the kind of guy who would walk down a sidewalk with shades and a giant boom box on his shoulder). I actually kinda wish DmC pushed that "70's London" look further. It's a nice blend of colorful and gritty, and it meshes well, I think, to the game's anti-establishment story. I'm not saying I want Dante to run around with a giant green Mohawk, but I _am_ saying that I really like the potential art direction.

As someone who mainly plays DMC games for the silly, ass-kicking, sexy characters (pretty much all the men and women in these games are fucking beautiful), I appreciated DmC: Devil May Cry's characters. They were more complex and I felt they had a more natural chemistry (though part of that is the impressive face tracking tek NinjaTheory used). There was more of an emphasis on character relationships than in the main-line games, and I love that. Vergil and Dante's relationship was super interesting to me too, as we finally got to see them work together and trust each other for a long stretch of time. And the villains were interesting too. I felt like I, to some degree, could understand them and their motivations outside of "power and violence good". I understand that the combat though is what most people play the main series for and DmC was lacking in complexity (in comparison). And as someone who played the original version of DmC where if you use the wrong weapon you bound off them, that shit was dumb and frustrating as hell and almost made me quit the game more than once. The definitive edition is so much better in that regard. I personally like the combat for similar reasons as you (Johnny) do, that being that I loved Nero's grappling ability in 4 and DmC expanded that. I truly wish that the mainline series and the DmC series could live alongside each other. I want more of these characters. But I agree that, if only one may survive, it should be the main-line games. But a woman can dream, right?

It wasn't terrible but it lost it's identity. Some elements of this game were great, such as the environments and small elements of this game would inspire some stuff in DMC V. It was a mistake this game was ever made but had it not been called DmC, it'd have been a passable action game. With hindsight, it definitely helped reaffirm WHAT DMC's identity is. So I don't actually hate this game, it ultimately is the reason we got DMC 5, a masterpiece of action gaming.

I didn't play the game until after beating DMC5, loving it, and getting into DMC3 and DMC4 and loving those too. As such, my opinion on it is one coming from a latecomer who already knew that DMC5 would go on to exist after this game. Under that context, I also found the game enjoyable. The story is goofy but generally nothing too bad and the gameplay is honestly pretty damn fun. However, I can also understand how people must have felt under the context of this game being brand new. Imagine playing DMC4 as a fan of DMC3 and at least liking it if not loving it, only for Capcom to ditch that storyline and make this instead of a sequel. I prefer the storyline of the original series any day, so I can very much empathize with the fear that this was going to be the series from now on and we wouldn't get any more games in the original continuity. Under that perspective, I can see where people were coming from being so harsh on the game, and the relative love the game is starting to get in a post-DMC5 world also makes a lot of sense. Generally speaking, the game is a pretty harmless standalone adventure telling a completely original story unrelated to the main series. For those thinking of trying it, just think of it as an edgy spinoff taking place in an alternate universe. The gameplay is the real star of the show in this one, the combo system feels fantastic to get good with and the sense of flow is phenomenal. Dante acts and plays like the main series Dante and Nero did a DBZ Fusion Dance, and it works way better than it has any right to.

I can't say that I'm surprised that you liked the game and that's fair lol. Me personally, I didn't much care for the game 10 years ago and my feelings are still more or less the same nowadays but it comes with a caveat, the caveat being that had this game just been an entirely new series that was a spiritual successor to the Devil May Cry series like how Yooka Layla was a spiritual successor to Banjo & Kazooie, I would've been more favorable to it. It did have some interesting ideas that could've been built upon. I actually liked "Donte's" design and I agree that his brotherly interaction with Vergil minus the occasional cringe like "My dick is bigger" (who actually says that to their brother...? CRINGE.). The world while not all that interesting to me personally, it would've been intriguing to see how they would build upon it and I can admit that the platforming elements with them were quite fun. In short, the concept had potential. I'm not gonna deny that the gameplay was solid (even if it was simplistic compared to the classic games) and it had a banging soundtrack (mostly the Industrial Rock, not so much the dubstep lol). Only other thing I didn't like besides the on the nose edgy writing was how it handled the female characters this time around what with Kat being a damsel and Lilith being a plot deviced object. But at least with Kat, there would've been sequel potential where she could learn how to do more offensive magic & spells to better defend herself. Anyway the point is, the female characters were poorly handled imo, a far cry from what we got with capable Lady & Trish. But yeah I digress, had they just made this a new IP, made "Donte" and "Fergil" be new characters like I dunno, calling them Keith ("Dante") and Aiden ("Vergil"),I would've so been rooting for the game to get a sequel. But as is... It just didn't really do it for me as a whole package. I don't begrudge those who like the game because the gameplay is fun no doubt. But as a "Devil May Cry" game? I just don't see it nor would care to view it that way and I'm glad hat tthey returned to the original aesthetic and style that originally defined the series. 🌟But like others have said, if they were to revive this series, scrap it's relation to Devil May Cry and make it it's own series, potential trilogy? I would no question support it. 🙂
