I played System Shock 1 when it came out and the idea of playing a game with the same controls is daunting. The updated version where they just gave you normal FPS controls was so much better and didn't loose anything in the process. So, if the dev gives us the option of regular FPS controls, I'd buy this. Even with the performance issues in the later game.

Yeah, a lot has changed since then. I know people get nostalgic for stuff like tank controls but I never really enjoyed them back in the day, I just enjoyed the games that had them. Stuff like the Resident Evil remakes switching to modern control schemes was a good improvement imo.

I like the fact that there’s the Call of Duty ‘thip’ sound when hitting an enemy. Always good to know when an attack lands.

No, the problem isn't Godot. Godot is arguably just as performance-optimized as Unity. Guarantee it's the dev
@user-dc9zo7ek5j5 ай бұрын
Unity can handle a lot more objects and maintain smooth FPS, but you're right, there are no 1000 objects in this game at one time.

The dragging reload mechanic would definitely annoy me.

Committing to the janky controls bit at least sets it apart! The sanity stuff looks kinda cool, but that's never been my cup of tea!

I'll put it on my wishlist but wait for the bugs to be ironed out then.

Performance issues like that always make me curious. Doubt its anything related to the engine, it's probably the Dev doing something silly.
@EphiTV5 ай бұрын
Yeah, most likely. Could be partially related to the engine in that it's easy to do the wrong thing with the way its set up. But still falls on the dev to figure that out.
@TrueLunar105 ай бұрын
I'm pretty sure Godot has tools to easily decompile it and view the games code so it shouldn't be hard to figure out why. The issue of course is if it's engine side you would need to support the engine project since the engine itself is open source

@@EphiTV Whats more interesting is that the devs clearly not having the issue due to the store videos running perfectly. I would suspect a hardware issue, which makes it more interesting.
@raphaelbossniak47945 ай бұрын
@@EphiTV Hello, Sonar Shock's dev here. Sorry you had a bad time with performance. I am still somewhat unsure what is causing this - mainly because it seems to occur on both high, medium and low end machines but runs fine on most others. Path finding is somewhat expensive, but the game is not running it too often. It could still be a hardware related issue. Regarding Godot generally: Godot recently switched from OpenGL rendering to Vulkan+ rendering. However, Vulkan+ rendering is not as optimised as the default rendering pipeline of other engines. Genererally speaking: Godot IS a little bit more harder to optimise (both Wrought Flesh and Cruelty Squad, both Godot games, are generally considered not to be very well optimised f.e.) than other engines.
@EphiTV5 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's strange. I obviously don't know how it's setup, but if it was rendering-related I'd expect the NPCs and stuff to also be an issue, but it seems to only be the enemies.

I think you can actually strafe in the original system shock, at least you can in doom, but you have to press alt+left/right key

Isn't it pronounced God-oh ? As in Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot - in which Godot was a stand in for God.
@EphiTV5 ай бұрын
Probably, I just like saying "go-dot" more
@johnpekkala69415 ай бұрын
That is true. The game engine is indeed named after Waiting for Godot as a pun on why the releases of new versions takes like forever but once they arrive your in for something good-ot! :) Its a small but very promizing engine and the 3rd most popolar one after Unity and Unreal Engine. After the Unity scandal many switched from Unity to Godot because its 100 % open source + also it can run on a potato. I can even use it on my android mobile! Try doing that with Unreal Engine! Its only around 70 MB compared to at least over 40 GB for Unreal Engine and still shock full of stuff. Kind of amazing how the Godot devs have managed to squeeze so much stuff into a such small program.

@@johnpekkala6941 Very interesting comment! I don't know anything about game engines - I'm a casual! But in fact I did hear about the Unity scandal - from Ross Scott, I think. Weren't they trying to claim royalties on any game created using it - even if the game was published for free?! I only commented because I'm a bit of a low-key pronunciation cop. Hearing KZbinrs mispronounce words is like fingernails down a blackboard to my ears. Not that its any of my business.

Ah yes, the famous game "Dzoiaja Dznosk"
@EphiTV5 ай бұрын
Is that a Russian meme or something
@siarhian105 ай бұрын
@@EphiTV Not really. If you can read Cyrillic (the alphabet used for many languages but also including Russian) then you become aware to faux-cyrillic, where people turn Latin characters backwards to make it "look soviet", even though they make different sounds. ѕ makes the "dz" sound, и makes the "i" sound, я makes the "ja" or "ya" sound (with j being used for the consonant y like in German or Polish), н makes the "n" sound, and с makes the "s" sound, so altogether you would read "ЅОИАЯ ЅНОСК" as "DZOIAJA DZNOSK"
@EphiTV5 ай бұрын
Ahh I see. Wonder if the dev knows that.
@raphaelbossniak47945 ай бұрын
@@EphiTV Yeah, I am aware. (I also can ready cyrillic, and speak some Russian.) People kind of expect it as a signifier that something is "Russian" or "Soviet" and I personally think it's tongue-in-cheek, but I also can understand it to some degree why some, especially native speaker, find it grading.

Is it? I see a resemblance, but a lot of old-school FPS games had spritework like that.
