What is crazy to me is that this situation is caused by only 2 factors being tweaked from the previous game that caused it to break. In Morrowind, for the most part, none of the enemies or equipment scale to your level. The only ones that do are the random spawns on the overworld. This makes players plan and get stronger before approaching a problem. You can find better loot even at a low level to adapt to the issue. The second change was that Oblivion trimmed the total amount of skills in the game which makes it harder to plan around levels in the long run. You have less opportunities to level skills with the attribute you want and if a skill of that attribute gets too high it becomes almost impossible to level that attribute up. An example of this is Morrowind having 5 skills that can level up strength, vs Oblivion having 3

Honestly, it's the level SCALING in everything else that's the problem. The stat-boosts based on skill ranks gained each level is a concept that works fine in Morrowind, a game where a Kwana Forager is a Kwama Forager and a Golden Saint is a Golden Saint, and that's that. You level up, you get stronger; only question is by how much, and choosing to min-max with your skills by way of the "efficient leveling" method outlined here is an option you can take or leave without much issue. It feels more like a reward for going out of your way to roleplay the act of intense training, rather than workaround for busted systems. It was also a straight-up improvement over Daggerfall's system, which just rolled a die on each level-up to give you a random number of points to assign to stats. Previous games in the series did put stronger enemies and variants in places based on player level, but it hardly applied to everything, and it didn't have as drastic an effect on enemy stats. Oblivion on the other hand applies level-scaling to anything and everything, so by endgame even the bandits are kitted out with ebony or daedric armor and rocking inflated stats. Skyrim may have nixed attributes entirely, but the real fix it applied to the problem was to only apply level-scaling to some things and not others, and not in such a uniform fashion. There are parts of the game that scale a little, parts that scale a lot, and parts that don't scale at all and remain fixed in place... meaning you can overcome them with higher skill levels and better gear. Oblivion, meanwhile, can legitimately reach a point where even if you are "efficiently" leveling, you should just stop leveling up because your damage potential stops increasing while enemy health pools keep inflating. Maddening.
@RNS_Aurelius2 күн бұрын
Not only do the types of enemies change depending on your level but their total health also scales effectively infinitely. So when you reach a very high level combat becomes a tedious slog against ridiculous damage sponges.
@CorporalChianelli2 күн бұрын
The leveling system was perfect. Why should you get max stat boost every level? It adds a layer of depth bc a beginner/casual player won't be rewarded for just doing the bare minimum while the journeyman/expert will reap the rewards of hard work and understanding. Personally games that punish the stupid and casual player are the best because if you're humble maybe you learn a thing or two and can appreciate the complexity and depth of a game and it's systems.

Yeah, I think I hit this issue back in the day, so I just lowered the difficulty because killing mobs became turning them into shish kebab for next few minutes. Like for some reason I wasn't getting killed by them, just damage output was low. That was whenever I didn't forget that you need to sleep to level up, which was also a problem. It is a system that looks good on paper, but then when you play it, it just falls apart. Also dunno if I am misremembering it or not, but also didn't game kind of punish you for overleveling at latter stage of main questline, where you have to babysit Martin and if you leveled too much, mobs that would attack would cut through friendly NPCs like knife through butter, but on the other side, you hitting at them was not doing that much of the damage? Like I remember that and can't really remember if I didn't need to cheat so Martin would survive. On the other hand, if you came there early you didn't need to do much. So like it was actually punishing you for taking your time to travel the world. Unless you forgot to sleep. Which also made me remember that whole world leveling with player was what kind of broke it, since older games had similar system and it worked better without world leveling with you. Plus you didn't have issues with keeping NPCs alive at too high level... feels like they added that without thinking how it impacts all the other systems. Which now that I think about it, sounds like the most Bethesda style of incompetence you can possibly have. Makes you think how they never really got more competent either. :-D

Because of you custom class you can put all your least used skills as majors ones and up your minor skills. I made a character that grew to have; 100 sneak, 90+ blade, 90+ destruction and restoration and 50+ light and heavy armor. And i was like in level 8. I wrecked things.

I won’t lie this levelling issue is the sole reason I haven’t tried the game yet. Granted yes, I can download the mod. But I seriously hate mods for first playthroughs. Some weird tick of mine
@ThumbSipper3 күн бұрын
For what it's worth the leveling issue is vastly exaggerated by a lot of players. The vast majority of stat gains comes from Skills (blade/alchemy/Block etc)rather than Attribute (strength/Intelligence/Endurance etc) so as long as you keep regularly level up your main skills you are gonna be perfectly fine even if your attributes stay low. Seriously the difference between a sword strike at 10 strength Vs 100 strength is no more than a dozen damage, it's nothing you couldn't replicate by hitting the enemies twice instead of once The enemy scaling is the actual problem, enemies DO get way too strong way too fast but, again, it can easily be countered by keeping your skills high, magic is also a big help and, because of this, I wouldn't really suggest playing this game without using magic, any magic skill allows to balance the fight in your favour. If you seriously never tried this game because of the fear mongering about the leveling system, give it a try. It's not as bad as this video makes it seem. Do use magic tough, it's really good.

Bandits in Daedric armor comes to mind. I did efficient levelling and maxed out stats. I can't believe the grinds I used to do.
@fisher007696 күн бұрын
Efficient leveling really isn't important. The only attribute that kind of matters is Endurance, but even that's not super big of a deal. The amount strength actually increases your damage is almost negligable compared to how your skill in that weapon affects it (Blade, Blunt, Hand to Hand). Same with Agility and Marksmanship. Personality is a 100% useless attribute, because of Charm (unless you fortify your personality with magical effects to stupid numbers where wildlife becomes non-hostile, still not really worth the effort). Speed is completely useless, your athletics matter more, your size matters a lot as well, but what matters the most is your encumbrance and weight of your weapon. Luck is a good attribute, but you can't efficiently level it, so it's irrelevant to this discussion. Willpower is a decent attribute, but it gives you a % based regeneration so your maximum Magicka matters a lot more. Intelligence is good, but it is capped relatively fast, and other ways to increase your Magicka are easy and much more important (potions, fortify attribute spells, birthsigns, enchanted gear...).

The "no stat increase thing" not entirely true, you can stay level 1, and up your stats in the wizard tower with spell creations and enchantments, however it will be very time consuming r, but it is doable without leveling up.

Spell crafting? You could destroy anything through spell crafting including full on breaking the game with say, a speed buff that makes your horse so fast you cross the map in seconds and crash the game. Never found this game difficult or the level a barrier although it was broken. I just don’t think it ever became hard. Morrowind was much more difficult.

Oblivion's leveling system is 100% transplanted from Morrowind's. The difference: Morrowind didn't have a world that leveled with you. At least not to Oblivion's degree. Sure, random monsters and loot factored player level into the tables, but NPCs had their level and they stayed that level. None of that "Player minus 5" or "Player plus 1" algebra. So a Morrowind PC could eventually outpace the rest of the world no matter how inefficiently they leveled up.

On episode of the Castle Super Beast podcast, a listener sent a letter to the podcast and told a story of how Warren Specter came to give a talk at their uni. One of the audience member asked a question, wondering if PS1 graphics would return to the mainstream. Spector said no, saying the art style is unpopular. This was waaaay before the boom of PS1 style graphics but it is kinda funny how he got it wrong, not that that's his fault.

After playing it im of the opinion its a multi faceted crtitique of several things. The industrial farming industry which is incredibly unhealthy bad for the environment and basically torture for the animals being crammed in spaces they barely fit in not to mention being pumped full of broad spectrum anti biotics that are absolutely going to contribute to antibacterial resistant strains going forward that we can't treat. Another part is the videogame industry i think as well and just capitalist work culture in general where we treat employees as commodities or assets instead of people and squeeze every drop of effeciency out of them under threat of firing to make 0.0001% more profits while working the person to death. Theres other interesting stuff in the game like did you know the games difficulty is determined by which country you pick? Its basically whichever country has the highest mountain peak as thats where your doing the train whistling and is why theres no oxygen. For example usa is the 3rd hardest difficulty. Unsure what that means towards the games measage but its interesting
@EphiTV13 күн бұрын
Yeah it very well could be a handful of things contributing to the message when everyone's expecting it to be just one concept. I knew the country affected difficulty but not how it worked. Assumed it affected the ticket printer speed but highest peak is an interesting take.
@dollenrm12 күн бұрын
@EphiTV yeah because the game takes place on the highest peak in whatever country you pick makes sense it affects the difficulty once you know, very interesting way to do it. Btw great video as usual ephi

That's cool. I can see how they worked that into the oxygen system. I just chose USA by default, but I also assumed it would be one of the "easy" countries if they were trying to tie it to GDP or some other economic factor. Sounds like it's one of the harder ones if you're going by mountain height.
