My mother wanted to buy me a nice present for my birthday because she knew I was going through a tough time in my life. She turned to my brother for gift ideas and he told her he knows of a knife I would love. My mother knows I'm a knife guy and gave him $ and the package came in the mail, long story short, I have a brand new Spyderco Southard. Something didn't seem right about it, so I checked it out online and it Turns out that my brother bought it from Aliexpress knowing it was fake. My mom didn't know, she just thought she got a good deal. It was very disappointing for me and my mom, but that is the kind of guy my older brother is... I gave my birthday present to my best friend who is not a knife guy and doesn't care its a copy. I would not dare to try to pass it off as genuine and make someone feel as bad as my brother made me and my mom did.

Ah Man! That is a sucky thing to do. I'm just enough of an ass that on his birthday I'd try to get the whole family in on giving him a giant gift wrapped box from everyone and have wrapped boxes like Russian nesting dolls until he reached the last one and unwrapped the counterfeit knife he set you up with and a card saying "And this is why you don't screw over family!" "Happy Birthday Asshole"

He sounds like a real A-hole. What you should do is get one of those fake lottery tickets and give it to him to scratch off. Wait for the reaction on his face when he thinks he won $10,000 - $50,000! He might even bring it to the convenience store to try and claim it. If he does go along with it until the clerk says it's fake. His reaction will be priceless!!!

Easy there fella... Some time has gone by since I posted this comment and I have some more info now. My brother does e-commerce for a living. I just didn't know what he sold online. We live in different states. Now I know it is cutlery and various other survival type items. One of the items is the fake Spyerco. He imports copies of many well known brand name knives from china and sells them as genuine online. Not to mention he prides himself with his wealth of knife knowledge. My guess is he knows they are fake. What do you think...? Now, since my mom gave him lots of money for this copy to give to me as a present. She also was deceived into believing it was authentic. So he took advantage of his mother for money and thought I would not notice it was a copy... So, if I am a "cunt" for expecting this to be authentic after my mom paid lots of money for it. So be it. I am a cunt... Wait, if people buy replica knives from his website and get upset when they find out they are copies, will they also be cunts if they get upset?

What I never understood about the counterfeits is, they are actually decent quality. Why would they bother to try passing them off as Benchmade? I mean they could make a fine living just selling these knives as their own brand. Just silly.

I don't understand why Benchmade doesn't just re-release the 42s. They could easily get away with selling them more expensive (what with the bumped up titanium price and whatnot) and it'd be good to get more of them out on the market. People like to bitch out the counterfits and the clones, but what the hell else are people supposed to do now days??? If you want a real one you have to pay a ludicrous amount of cash and hunt around for ages. And you're not even getting new items, you get second hand, used stuff for more than triple the original price. I bought an Exiled, which is a blatant clone, yes. And I got completely torn apart on knife forums when I talk about it. But what the fuck else was I supposed to buy? It was a decent price, I haven't had to maintain it once after three solid years of abuse. It's a good knife, and yet it's hated by all. So what? I'm supposed to blow two weeks of pay on a second hand benchmade that might not even get into my country? BM should just man up and make some more 42's. It's not as though they aren't in demand.
@cutlerylover10 жыл бұрын
as much money as they would make selling them there are still legal issues with balisongs, I have asked the same questions dozens of items and it comes down to money as usual, they can sell folders and fixed blades everywhere, but are limited in balisong sales...

@joeyashworth601110 жыл бұрын
If benchmade stoped the 42 for legal issues why do they still have the infadell and other automatic/switchblade knives
@abysspect10 жыл бұрын
cutlerylover They still make balisongs, though. Just recently they released the 62, for crying out loud. Even if they just made a bunch of BM 42 SS models without the titanium, that would be enough. People would pay for the shape, the look, and the quality. Besides, if a bunch of counterfitters in china and even the US can afford enough titanium to make screw-for-screw replicas of the 42, then I'm pretty sure a multi-billion dollar knife company with huge amounts of credibility can afford to buy a bit of it. My point is, it's hardly fair to get angry about clones and counterfits when the legitimate models are all: 1) Second hand. 2) Incredibly overpriced and 3) impossible to find even at that. When I first entered the knife scene, they were around $400 a pop. Now? I've seen the fucking things going for upwards of $700. Over $1000 for some of the rarer models. When somebody sells a counterfit or a clone 42, Benchmade LOSES FUCKING NOTHING. They lose nothing. They no longer sell the knife, they no longer make the knife, they no longer earn a single goddamn cent for them, and yet people act like the counterfitters and cloners are somehow "damaging" their company. Either BM mans up and makes more, or people stop acting like a counterfit 42 is the most horrible thing somebody can buy and that anybody who willingly does so is somehow a "traitor" or something.

This was sent by a former benchmade customer service representative However, the 62 is superior to the 42 in many ways including the following: 1. The handles are machined from billet as opposed to castings. The titanium castings had voids throughout the handles (internal, but sometimes even exposed on the surface. ALL of the handles were bent, warped and twisted to some extent; and ALL had visible cosmetic flaws caused by the casting process such as rough channel edges, etc. Precision machining the handles out of billet will also give us the capability to make handles out of any materials we choose such as: aluminum; titanium; brass; G10; Carbon Fiber; Damascus; etc. The casting process limited us to only using Titanium on the 42 (the SS limited’s were cast off of the same tool but there were so many problems we were not able to do further runs). Ultimately casting is a lower quality production method. 2. The 62 uses two stop pins as opposed to a tang pin on the 42. The tang pin was soft stainless whereas the stop pins are heat treated 400 series. The stop pins will wear better over time. The old style tang pins would wear and flatten with use causing the 42 to get loose in the open position and requiring the pin to be “swelled” using a hammer and punch. The stop pins also eliminate the need for a “kicker” on the blade tang for the closed stop. This allows us to bring the cutting edge back further on the 62 extending the edge by about another ¼”. 3. The spring latch served to keep the latch “erect” while flipping; preventing it from hitting the opposing handle. However, the springs required extra care as they would get “squeaky” over time and require oil. They were a cause of failure (spring breakage) in the field. And they required the handles of the 42 to be nearly ½” longer than the more compact 62. Also, during flipping, centrifugal force will keep the lightweight latch of the 62 extending out from the handle, effectively negating the need for the spring. 4. The heavier, smoother stainless steel handles of the 62 are an intentional nod to the “old-school” days of the 45. Believe it or not, stainless and brass used to be the standard and when the 42 came out, people were up in arms over the light weight titanium; complaining it didn’t flip as well as the heavier materials. 5. As he’s already pointed out we upgraded the steel to D2.

@ParallelUniversity10 жыл бұрын
Jeff, do you still have a Model 30? I have one and I am pretty sure it is real but it is looser and more "jangly" than my 62. I don't know if it is supposed to be like that. Do you know if there are any fakes of those around?

Most pin construction bali's have issues, benchmade might be willing to tighten it if you ask real nice, my 10, 30, and my 259 all have play issues.

i prefer balisongs with pins not screws cause from past use ive had a (not so cheap) balisong with screws and they kept coming loose, got one with pins never fallen apart yet...

They sell cheap shit like that here in Norway also at rema1000 (its like walmart/kmart ore what ever you call it in the states) 1,5-2 dollars a real 1 is like 100 dollars from a real store.

Jeff, you've got a recommendation on a knife for cutting boxes? Name brand. Not menacing since it's the Home Depot. Great edge retention. Max 70$. Please, and thank you.

Go on trusted websites. In the URL bar (the bar in which the link of a page is located at the top of your screen) at the beginning of the link (or URL) it can say either "http" or "https". the "s" in https stands for "secure". So you know it's a trusted site. And also look at the reviews. If they're good then it's good. Hope this helped :)
